The number crunch desire, why?

Here's where I'm coming from: numbers can be used as proof.

So, with arguments between us players, when some guy says I suck or should improve this or that, I can produce a log to prove him wrong, or he can produce a log to prove his point, and the discussion can rationally proceed from there. I don't group with idiots and I'm not gonna take L2P comments out of thin air, and currently there's no way any of you can prove that I suck or not.

But player-to-player interaction can be handled by having social graces, and thus doesn't matter as much. What I really want the logs for is to prove to Bioware that their classes aren't quite balanced. I can scream on the forums till I'm blue that Guardian tanks feel weak or that I believe they should improve the healing for the two non-jedi classes, and they won't do squat. Post logs on a couple popular websites, though, and watch them scramble to fix the image of their game and balance the classes. They can't argue with numbers, they'll have to take action.

So, bottom line, I prefer a combat log. In its absence, though, I prefer that Bioware listens to our suggestions, like, stat, immediately. Which they don't. Because we don't have the numbers to back up our arguments. But if they start to, like seriously start listening to all our class balance suggestions and start implementing them, then fine they can do without the combat log.

I've enjoyed the absence of meters because it leaves those people who are inclined to find fault in others first with very little to say and no proof to act on. As a result the focus has been on game-play rather than micro-managment.

I see nothing wrong with numbers crunching and min/maxing, do that with great delight in pen and paper RPGs, so of course I also like to do it with MMOs. I hate it when my character just sucks. When I am knowing what I am doing and what the best way is to accomplish things in the game no body has to make the game easy for me (need no good will of the DM to fudge some dies so that the group wins, or that devs have to nerf their content because people are to stupid to get the boss down).

Personally I never cared for it..if I wanted to work spreadsheets I can do that at work and actually the number one request the company I am currently consulting for receives for their upcoming MMO title is; "please don't turn this game into a graphical Excel sheet."

Seems that the more people discover MMO's the less they like that feature,
What's actually funny is completely making something up and sticking it on a group of people to some how try and justify some feeling you have. Pretty sad stuff

There hasnt been a game that needed it for raiding since EQ2

Why people want it is beyond me

Everything in this game is cake
Randoms can clear 8 mans
16s are well half asleep difficult lol

No need

People always say well I use it to analyze stuff

I dont ever want to see it. There is no need at all in this game for it

It breeds bad play and it breeds lazy play

I do not want this game to turn into rift where everyone ran 1 of 3 builds cause they had to, well because someone posted a build and other thought they had to

At least atm people can experiment with builds and abilities
I never want another game where everyone plays this build because it does the most dps or we have to take at least 6 (insert class here) because they have the highest dps

Numbers don't lie. Neither does standing in the fire and dieing. Both points are valid.

Some people prefer playing UNO for fun, others like to play Poker for money. Neither group is playing a game of cards the "right way".

I like friendly competition between the other dps and healers, as well as with myself (continual improvemnt). I find either role to be very boring without it. Game mechanics just aren't that fun. It's the spirit of competition that does it for me.

Is that wrong?

I mean I get that maybe you don't care about it and just want to beat the content in a friendly environment, and you don't want to some acehole to have the tools to point out how he is better than you and you suck. But you are going to get those people either way, and that is not the only purpose for number crunching.

Many people find the numbers to be just plain fun.

I hate number crunching myself. However with enrage mechanics on everything it's pretty well mandatory if you want to clear a boss and progress in end game.
