What defines an RPG videogame?
What precisely, are the key features that make an RPG, an RPG?

Good games, but no where near the subscription base of WoW.

WoW is a strange beast, people have so much time invested in it that they don't want to start over with a new MMO. It's not that other MMOs are bad, it's just that WoW was the first theme-park MMO with mass appeal.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if Blizzard decided to turn off the servers, I wonder which game people would gravitate to, or if they would just give up on the MMO genre.
To be honest both LoTRO and Rift are success games. Can't compare stuff to Wow. Wow is a phenomena of its own and I don't think it's likely we will ever see that kind of dominance again.

SWTOR will "succeed" I think, after a lot of arse-kicking from it's customer base. And a little time.
Peace

Despite all the trolls and hate you read on these forums. Majority of people I talk to in-game freakin love it, and so do I. Subbed for 6 months with no reason to cancel anytime soon. Same with about 6 of my friends who are playing.

What defines an RPG is important when compared to other genres. While story is an important aspect of RPGs, character development is equally important. As a player I want multiple choices in what general direction my character should evolve.

And with character development or progression comes the most important aspect of RPG: how well you perform as a player is hugely based on the power and abilities of your character. Dodging an arrow is not a matter of how fast I'm able to press a button but how well developed my character's dodging skills are.

Yes, I do see it happening. Even reigning longer than that.

Why? Because it's Star Wars and BioWare my friend with EA to feed them millions upon millions to keep this great game alive!

It will keep getting refined, patched, updated, content updates will come fast..bug fixes will happen at fast speeds. Like what they are doing with the game now.

In 10 years this game will have over 200 planets with starships customizable with space pvp, free roam space, TONS of classes and races and level cap 150, or something around there. TOR will not fail, nor is it going anywhere anytime soon!

may the force be with us all!

Sure it can, its called audience diversification. Or simply put, this is not the game the hardcore is looking for.

Ten years is quite a long time, considering how fast computer technology chnges, but for the next 3-4 years I think SWTOR will be one of the best MMO's on the market.

You do realise SWG was around for about a year and a half before world of warcraft was ever realeased dont you? and that the servers only closed down this year?

So that means the game lasted(albeit to a small audience) for about 9 years..

So if SWTOR outlasts SWG that would be quite a feat to be fair.

Eventually the game will get boring, the same, or whatever may happen.

Unfortunatly I do not see this game making it past ten years. Take StarCraft... It was huge and lasted YEARS! The biggest reason it lasted was because it was strategy and each match was different. Hopefully Star Wars TOR goes for a good long while (longer than galaxies) but let's face it the next generation game is already being thought of.

:\ It's a tough hard world.
