Tank companions used to be good enough to tank stuff. They used to be just below player tanks. However, healers would use a tank companion and were soloing heroic content. So they nerfed tank companions to the point of worthlessness. They're now so bad, they don't have that great of threat, they don't live that much longer at all, and do half the damage.

I'd be happy if companions just moved a bit in combat, like out of AoE Seriously once combat starts they freeze and never move till it ends. They're turrets and require way too much micromanagement.
That's funny, because I've used Qyzen the entire time as a tank with a Shadow full Infiltration spec. Yeah, sometimes I'll pull threat from him, just as I pull threat from player tanks because I'm critting like crazy. I've had zero problems taken on most of the heroic 2's by myself up through Belsavis already.

I agree with your bulletpoints. In fact, making companion specialization customizable would be PERFECT.

I loved Mako because I was pure DPS. I didn't use any of the other companions for more than 10 minutes after getting them because the tank companions are pathetic and DPS companions are not impressive, but a free healer was perfect.

And there was nothing in her story that forced Mako to be a healer. She could just as easily have been specced for DPS to supplement your healing character.

Spec customizations and appearance customizations need to be offered as soon as you get your new friend or possibly even before your start your storyline so that they will appear consistently throughout the game for you. You sometimes grow attached to an initial appearance, and finding great looking customizations halfway through the game feels detrimental to the visual story.

slang. y u no valid?

to OP: yep, pretty much my words. I've hated to drag around some annoying companions with me throughout the game.

Now, you always have the option of not using any companion. No one forced you to do anything. Now, I do understand that we all don't like every companion, there are some I actually despise. The thing is, in the stories in every RPG you come across characters as you go on, and you don't always come across the characters that you want most that will do the best for you right away. That's how it is, and that's how it is in this game.
This isn't a single player game, and shouldn't work like it is. There is no good reason why a Powertech should have a healing companion at level 10 but a Jedi Guardian won't get theirs until their mid 30's when they're both tanking classes. That's a real gameplay problem created by forcing certain specs and companions throughout the leveling process.

"That's how it is" is an excuse, and not a very good one when there were ways to work around it being the way it is.

I don't like how they handled companions in this game. Since they felt they had to implement them I think they should have done it in a way that mirrored other BW games.

First, they should have given you most of your companions at the start. Now I know people will say, "but the stoooory" but they could have just as easily framed the class stories in the classic BW formula -- get your team, go to x number of places, have companions interact with each other and get to know them over a longer period of time. As an IA, I didn't get my second companion until 30. I got to know Kaliyo pretty well during that time but every character that was thrown on me in the next 20 levels not so much.

Customize companion specs. Why wasn't this in there? DA and ME let you spec companions so you could take who you liked (more or less) unless you were really min-maxxing in ME. DA for example; say I wanted to play an ******e but didn't feel like hearing Alistair ***** at me about it I could just spec Sten to tank. Granted he wouldn't be as good in the long run but it didn't really matter.

You can stop reading here. This is just where I would put a rant about companions who almost never acknowledge each other and how only one of them has a real personal quest. By that I mean, Kaliyo was the only one I had to go do stuff for. All my other companions went off and did supposedly cool stuff then just came back and told me about it.

Picking a companion would have been much better.

I've avoided certain alts, not because of the class, but because of when they get a decent companion. Annoying I can deal with, but not useful really sucks.

As a Trooper it was at a reasonable level that I got a romance option healer that is by far the best companion for a Trooper. While other classes you have to wait for the useful companion till the 30's and even then they aren't the interesting "virtual hump fest" that the Trooper got.

Only a few classes get their best companions right away "useful" wise. And having to companion swap before dialogs is crap.

So, it's hard to tank with a dps companion? Funny that my Guardian isn't having any problem without any sort of healing companion.

You choose to play a certain class and faction because of what that class has. Be it abilities, roles or companions.

My Consular wants Forex and Blizz on her crew.
Hi! I'm Darth Harrington of Darth Harrington's Intergalactic Proton Powered Electrical Tentacled Advertising Droids Emporium and Moon Base. Due to a garbled subspace transmission, I am currently overstocked on all Intergalactic Proton Powered Electrical Tentacled Advertising Droids, and I am passing the savings onto yoooou!

Yes, the 'disappoint' thing is a joke. You need to relax more (shocks).

Now, sure I could attempt to do the game without a companion, but it would be basically impossible. Bioware designed the solo content with companions in mind. You must be trolling.

Other games and RPGs, sure, they had multiple companions but generally:
- Most were available early enough to not feel obnoxious.
- Early choices were varied and compelling.
- They didn't lock you to a single class to get them generally.

Of course I could play an Agent and get some...awful looking emo thing to tag along. Or go back to my warrior and enjoy Vette. Or my Merc. But my point is that I shouldn't have to.
In fact, your life does flash in front of your eyes before death.
The process is known as "living".
