Why is Character Creation So Bad?

I agree, character creation is pretty underwhelming.

I can understand the body types being presets, but IMHO they need at least 6 per gender, not only 4.

When I first started the game and saw the character creator, I was so excited. There were so many options! But then I realized that about half of them are slight variations of each other, a large chunk of them are just plain ugly, and many of them are shared across races.

In my previous MMO (FFXIV) I may have only had 8 hairstyle options for my character, but they were all tastefully done, entirely different from each other, and exclusive to that race and gender. Which, incidentally, also had unique animations.

It doesnt have to be Skyrims , check out Star Trek Onlines and see how customizable it is , the games free to download now.

Eh, STO was done by Cryptic Studios, who also did Champions Online and City of Heroes.

Notice a common theme there? They all have insanely detailed character creators.

Few other games come even close.

Now the games those character creators are ATTACHED to, that's another story.

That is not the point. Not like TOR is any better really.

My main problem is that one option affects too much stuff.
"Complexion" not only affects the complexion, but also eyebrows.
Also eyeshadow & lipstip are tied together too much (not palette, just styles directly.
Hairstyles missing the "mirrored" version - it's probably not difficult to design, but adds a small difference to characters.

Overall, I dislike the customization options.

Anyway, I think BioWare was pretty cheap when it came to the selected species for each side. They took the cookie-cutter route in the blandness of character creation. Every race is just one slight variation of a human. Most "options" are reused for almost every species. For example, the four male "body type" options are all the same:

1) scrawny, short "kid"
2) average height, build
3) tall, bodybuilder
4) or REALLY fat!

Can't have a husky guy? No, your choice is teenager, adult athlete, bodybuilder or couch potato.

The scars are all the same, as are the hair styles. Seriously, how stupid does a Zabrak or Sith look with a Justin Beiber hairstyle or that dumb-looking mohawk? Serious, cornrows? Are Sith Warriors gonna get a quest to go into a recording studio to perform "Juggernaut's Paradise" or "Straight Outta Korriban"? Give me a break!

I think there should be more variations that are species-specific. I like that the facial tattoos for the Mirialan, Rattataki, and the Zabraks are different. But the general build of the characters are all the same.

Here's an idea: try making original species that are unlike any of the others. Some species in the Star Wars galaxies would be awesome additions in a game like this. But, it seems too difficult to make anything actually "special". It's a shame when all the characters practically look the same.
Yes im really put off by the body types too.

The ideal body type i pictured for my marauder was somewhere inbetween the roid junky and the average build guy.

Average build looks too scrawny in the end game armor, and the body builder looks like he should not be able to force leap across a chasm, and looks a bit silly with the fast paced acrobatic combat of marauder.

Makes me laugh honestly. No long hair whatsoever, just like Mass Effect.

18 different kids of stupid mohawks, though. I'm so glad.

Bioware has always completely sucked at character creation. They feature a bounty hunter with luxurious long red locks, think we'd get that in the game? Oh hell no.

What really makes me sigh is everyone here knows this couldn't be farther from priority. They do NOT care about this in the least. Gotta appease those PVP and raid kiddies with the first 27 patches and expansions.

Then - maybe.

But probably not.

this.

KOTOR had little to no character creator, you basically just chose what your head looked like and your gender...

Reading into this, I'd pay a hundred dollars to hear the developers justify why they didn't go for one of the best character creation systems available, and go from there, rather than this pile of junk.

At LEAST look at Star Trek's system. It's really pretty decent!

Is it Star Wars canon they're up against?

How in the heck do you have a game based on an entire galaxy, yet it's humanoids only. Completely lazy and it makes me completely rage when I know, know KNOW that they will NEVER even think of adding to it or fixing it. in 2015 if this game is somehow still around, I bet you it's the exact same thing with a couple more "races" added on.

I wasn't saying I approve of the terrible character creator in TOR though.
