Why is Character Creation So Bad?

Swtor: 8 body types
Wow: 24 body types
“People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.”

After reading all of the responses, I am going to specifically express the changes I think should be made. Most of these changes restrict certain attributes to a specific species. It's probably asking too much, but that's ok. I will only list the changes I would make. Anything NOT listed is fine.

Size
short & skinny
short & medium
short & muscular
short & fat
average & skinny
average & medium
average & muscular
average & fat
tall & skinny
tall & medium
tall & muscular
tall & fat

Scars
add/change/remove some options
have scars affect color of tattoos & hair (hair doesnt grow on scars, and discolors tats)

Tattoos
give the option of “none”

Hairstyle
ONLY for Humans, Mirialan, and Chiss (It looks ridiculous on Sith and Zabraks);
add/remove/change some (i.e, add flattops & topknots)

Hair Color
ONLY for Humans, Cyborgs, Mirialan, and Chiss

Beards
ONLY for Humans, Cyborgs, Mirialan, and Chiss

Cybernetics
add the option of a limb or two being cybernetic

Lekkuhave the option of one or two, or even have one that was “cut off from battle”

Headbands
are they really necessary?

I’m just looking to give each species some features that are not shared by others. It gives each character more of a personal touch. And, as listed above, some shared features (like hair and beards) look stupid on certain species.

If you can think of anything else, feel free to comment.

Of all the MMO's I have played, only one had a less dynamic character creator than SWTOR. That game was EverQuest. Back before they upgraded things with the Scars of Velious expansion. So this game is close to 15 years later and has only a slightly improved character creation.

I admit my experience is limited to a mere 10 MMO's. EQ,EQ2,SWG,DCUO, DDO, LOTRO, Perfect World and a few others. But still, I would think a game with supposedly $100 million plus budget could have done better.

/rant
I am still having fun playing for the most part. My only real grievance being the nerf nuke launched at slicing. I admit it should have been toned down a little do to those that exploited it, but they toned it down too far. Before the nerf they had the first truly innovative MMO that would let you be able to afford to craft all your own gear for your own lvl without having to farm endlessly for mats or credits ( I hate farming as it is boring beyond belief) but now I have to farm cash. So instead I am joining the herd of people racing to higher lvls and spoiling some story content so I can have a char that can feed cash to my main so the farming grind isn't quite as bad.
/end rant

flame me for my gripe about the slicing nuclear nerf.. I couldn't care less

but my on topic comments still stand

For a game in 2012, I feel the choices are so limited it is disgusting.

Both Kotor games didn't have a great character creator.

both games were made almost Ten years ago when character creation was relatively new to video games.

Anyway, I think BioWare was pretty cheap when it came to the selected species for each side. They took the cookie-cutter route in the blandness of character creation. Every race is just one slight variation of a human. Most "options" are reused for almost every species. For example, the four male "body type" options are all the same:

1) scrawny, short "kid"
2) average height, build
3) tall, bodybuilder
4) or REALLY fat!

Can't have a husky guy? No, your choice is teenager, adult athlete, bodybuilder or couch potato.

The scars are all the same, as are the hair styles. Seriously, how stupid does a Zabrak or Sith look with a Justin Beiber hairstyle or that dumb-looking mohawk? Serious, cornrows? Are Sith Warriors gonna get a quest to go into a recording studio to perform "Juggernaut's Paradise" or "Straight Outta Korriban"? Give me a break!

I think there should be more variations that are species-specific. I like that the facial tattoos for the Mirialan, Rattataki, and the Zabraks are different. But the general build of the characters are all the same.

Here's an idea: try making original species that are unlike any of the others. Some species in the Star Wars galaxies would be awesome additions in a game like this. But, it seems too difficult to make anything actually "special". It's a shame when all the characters practically look the same.
I totally agree on this, even the muppets Cryptics STO one makes this character creator poor.
Well done Patch 1.2, lots of additions that i was looking for.

So essentially you guys want Skyrim's character creator, minus the abundance of dirt?
