Why is Character Creation So Bad?

Yeah, one of the things that irritates me about MMO developers is that a lot of them seem to consider character creation some sort of nuisance to put up with. It's not often you get a superb creation tool like in Champions Online, and that's a real shame. To me, a big part of the fun in an MMO comes from appealing to my vanity.

With graphics technology getting better and better, we should be seeing a proportional increase in the quality of creation tools in AAA MMOs, yet, here we have TOR's. I really wish something this weak wasn't acceptable in 2012.

There is a bit of truth to this.

I tend to play Dwarf in most MMO's and I had a Gobbo Squig Herder in Warhammer.

I want a short character here ..... Jawa would be perfect.

The lack of stubble for males is... astonishing. The beards look like obscure growth with different textures to the hair.

I'm surprised that the character creation wasn't as robust or with more features. The HeroEngine actually has a very good Character System so not sure why they didn't take advantage of that.

Goblins and gnomes? I think perhaps you're on the wrong forums.

WOW
LOTRO
AOC
WARHAMMER

and those are just the few i've played.

but if you were expecting character creation like in Star trek online or EVE online or APB. you're crazy.

EDIT: RIFTS character creator was pretty good to.

Although WoW races look diffeent from eachother, in TOR you can choose between, red human, blue human, human human, yellow human, robotic human etc. I wonder why they didnt use all the cool creatures that the franchise has to offer, but just make everybody look different bodybuilt, different colored human model.

It's on the complexion dial. I guess the character creator was too much for you.

Problem with the stubble being on the complexion slider (instead of, you know, on the beard type slider) is that the few stubble choices that exist force you to pick a specific type of tan, eyebrow style, etc.

Basically, if you want to have stubble you have two or three choices for for a complexion, instead of the 30(?)+ everyone else has.
