I have always liked to look at some real evidence to back up or disprove claims. Many players on this forum are also looking for some sales numbers for the game. Subscriptions and server populations are important, but they are often pretty speculative and based on estimates. The following, however, are as close as we can come to some actual figures.

According to vgchartz, a website tracking game sales, SWTOR has sold the following over the last few weeks. Note that these are weekly sales figures. Totals are given below.
(Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/31584/s...public/Global/)

It should also be noted that vgchartz is in the business of ESTIMATION. Quoting from their website...
Quote:
VGChartz publishes over 7,000 unique estimates per week relating to worldwide game hardware and software sales
Like most research firms, vgchartz does not just pull the numbers out of thin air, and they do have a track record for accuracy. That said, we should still consider the following numbers as estimated figures, not ACTUAL figures.

Global weekly sales
24th December 2011: 1,486,862
31st December 2011: 326,312
07th January 2012: 115,900
14th January 2012: 70,621
21st January 2012: 61,708

TOTAL SALES ACCORDING TO VGCHARTZ: 2,061,403
Total number of global retailer sales
Total as of 12/24/2011: 1,486,862
Total as of 12/31/2011: 1,813,174
Total as of 1/7/2012: 1,929,074
Total as of 1/14/2012: 1,999,695
Total as of 1/21/2012: 2,061,403

A few comments about these numbers:

1. vgchartz only records retailer reported numbers, and may not represent digital sales.
2. In that first week of 12/24/2012, 1.486 million units were probably not sold. Rather, this number includes preorders from previous weeks.
3. Here are some more specific sales figures from USA/Europe
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/31584/s...-republic/USA/
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/31584/s...public/Europe/
4. I am not trying to comment on the success/failure of this game. I am simply injecting some real evidence into an otherwise speculative debate.

Thoughts? Comments? I would rather just present the data and see what people think than.

A lot of threads over the past few weeks have speculated on sale figures for SWTOR. Many people have cited numbers without actually giving sources. This thread offers a more concrete set of answers about SWTOR sales figures. I know that this information is important to some players and can spark discussion.

The biggest problem I have with this data is that it's not including digital sales.

However you can see trends, and the trend is the total number of purchasers is down from launch, but I don't think I needed this data to figure that out :P

an MMOs sucess is not based on retail copies sold, but on SUSTAINED subs.

Big time MMO releases are such a big deal, I'd wish they would stop going overboard with the servers every time.

I think they do include digital in their estimates. NPD, which tracks actual physical sales via SKU tracking, reported that SWTOR sold 600,000 physical copies as of Dec 31. So, to hit the estimate they have there it would have to include digital.

It doesn't matter, it's all estimates based on retail boxes sold.

My guess is 1,000,000,000,000,000 subscribers.
