I feel your pain OP.

My first MMORPG experience was DAoC; I think that's a perfect example of a world you logged into rather than a game you logged into. Things changed every day back then - frontlines changed, keeps were taken and lost, faction relics stolen and retrieved. You could grab some buddies and go hunting epic monsters in endgame zones for who-knows-what-kind-of-loot.

I really searched for why DAoC captivated me and made me want to log in every day on my infiltrator years after I had reached level cap, while only a few weeks of being at level cap in this game has me bored and considering cancelling my sub. I can't put my finger on it exactly. Maybe it's because I have all the best gear in the game for both PvE/PvP (and it wasn't hard to get). Maybe it's because PvP in a guild-premade is such a joke and way too easy to roll the enemy team.

I guess in DAoC it never felt like I was done with my character. In SWTOR, it feels like I beat the game already. I won. There's nothing left to do...

Yeah same here. Carpenters crafting items for you to deck out your tower. Tamers selling dragons. Alchemists selling potions. Large player run cities with vendors that sold a large array of items you would want to purchase for vanity or hunting.

Running through the forests to get to a dungeon to meet up with fellow friends/guild members, only to come across a PK and have a fun time knowing that you may lose all your stuff if you don't win the fight.

Ahhhh, those were the days!

ever since eq2 and WoW came out mmo's have been going down hill. EQ1 was the last good mmo. and it may be going F2P hybrid model but till WoW reaches 13 years and at that point not gone to F2P I will never be able to acknowledge it has the staying power EQ1 does. in the 13 years that eq has existed many many came and went. for example: Age of Conan, DoAC, SWG, LOTRO, these are the ones that i can say were popular for a short time or long time but went kaput or free to play. also on the list are Matrix Online, Vanguard. now also there are games that are still around either full pay or with a hybrid play aspect. Aion, WoW, Eq2, SWTOR, Coh/Cov,

I don't think the development of these games are the problem. I think the issue is with the players. the player base only wants what they want, who cares what is going on with anything but their own wants. they don't get it some will threaten to leave the game yet never leave. they demand this and when the devs bow to that then it's not enough they did it wrong. you can't have the game down you can't make changes unless they personally approve of this. and this is why games fail, because either the players leave because they feel they know better how to fix games no matter their credentials. or the companies decide that it's not worth continuing the game support so they sell it off or close it.

DAoC is still alive and kicking for the record. And not F2P.

wishes there was a new game with this experience instead of the carebear borefests that the majors keep force feeding us.

You mean like SecondLife? I spent a pretty large amount of time on that game, but its more of a simulator than an MMO, as MMOs tend to have an aim.

I remember playing Underlight. That was the first MMO I played that required an monthly fee.

Oh and WWII Online is still going on. 12 years now and still not free to play.

This sentiment echoes mine precisely.
