It's a bleeding terrible analogy and I really wish people would stop using it.

Aye WoW isn't a game anymore. It stopped being a game when it turned into a social event. It's now part of modern culture. Obviously I don't mean this literally.
Is a video game not a manufactured product that is sold to consumers? Am I missing something here?

Are you dense? Or do you intentionally delude yourself? Rift is not a "flop". It's not WoW, but I question where any new game ever will be. Right place, right time, good product.

.
Rift didn't flop. It made Trion over 100 million and garnered another 85 million of investment. They are thinking about going public now. Those are all signs of a successful venture. Is Rift the dominant MMO? No. Will it ever be? No. Probably not. But when you produce a product and that product makes money for you and that success gets you massive additional funding, it's not a failure by any definition.

Warhammer is a better example.

If you go out and buy a new car today would you then be happy if it only had the same features as cars made 20 years ago?
Ah, the cut and pasted nonsensical "car" argument. When did you get your last "car" update? MMOs evolve. Either understand that or go back to whatever it is that satisfies you.

I think many people compare this to WoW because WoW has been the most successful mmorpg with the largest subscriber base of any MMO to date. So When you are the best, you will naturally be the one everyone compares to. That said, I also think that some people don't understand that when WoW first came out, it was riddled with issues. BUT since it was pretty much the only show in town (EQ was dying and EQ2 didn't have the following) they could get away with much more. After several years of refinement, patches, new content etc etc etc, WoW became the MMO to rule them all.

Every magazine article written today (whenever a new MMORPG is released) has the same verbiage in the title "<random named mmorpg> Is this the new WoW killer?" I honestly believe given the time, and IF BIG IF Bioware/EA etc put forth the effort, listen to subscribers feedback, and use lessons learned from other successful venues, that SWTOR could very well be the next legitimate WoW killer.

Another thing I see with this game that I didn't see with WoW is that this game seems to have attracted many first time MMORPG players. Many players that are console gamers that are use to Skyrim or Fable type RPG's and aren't use to the buggy-ness that are fairly typical with large scale games like this. So there is going to be alot more negativity towards this, say than WoW.

As with all things, time will tell.

The problem is that we didn't go back in time to release TOR, it was released in the present when all MMO developers should know that those features are extremely popular and should be the standard by now. That said, I am very much enjoying TOR so far and see myself playing it for a long time.

Yes...Rift IS considered highly succesful. I mean they recently posted a 100 million dollars in revenue.

People seem to think that if a game does not sell MILLIONS and keep MILLIONS of subscribers that it will be considered "unsuccesful".

Let me ask this...Is every musical artist that is not Michael Jackson considered unsuccesful? I mean nobody will ever break his records sales so wouldnt that mean everyone else is unsuccesful? People really get on my nerves with the whole "WOW has the most subscriptions therefore it's the best." That's like saying Justin Bieber is the best because he sold the most records last year.
