It's a limitation of the game world. You ARE in a the starwars game world and you will abide by their speed limits dammit! Joking aside, Bioware should be careful to not remove these things but it is what destroyed that other game. While it may be annoying to ride a horse from one city to another, I can't instantly teleport from London to Tokyo either, and that limitation defines the game world that they created.
