The jedi are hypocrites aren't they? I thought that was the point.
“People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.”

Reminds me of a you're-not-so-different-from-me speech the final boss of Uncharted 2 gives the player before they fight. "How many people have you killed, just today?".
i had to wrap my head around that feature of the game too.

as a jedi, this is my surmization:

the jedi Need to keep a certain amount of enemies active, even in custodial care, to maintain a degree of relevance

at the end of the day, my Consular has a life more akin to that of Dog the Bounty Hunter than that character that Liam Neeson immortalized in Episode One.

I don't think so, honestly. The clear intention of the Jedi Knight story is for a heroic adventure. There's nothing like slaughtering dozens of minions and then offering their commander the choice to surrender to make the scenario heroic.

The Jedi in KOTOR 2 were hypocrites. The ones in SWTOR are earnest and light-sided while they're slaughtering plebs and the real choice is to spare their smarmy, British-accented commander.

the jedi 3000 years after the old republic.. ie. movies are space hippies with all the silly protect the weak, respect all life etc rules...

the old republic jedi are the ones who committed genocide by nuking korriban from orbit forcing the sith into unknown space during the great hyperspace wars, and crushed a planet to stop mandolore during the mandolorian wars at malocore, many married those in the order, (Satele has a son, and is decended from Bastila) they just warn that passion, and attachment can lead to the darkside.

That's the kind of Jedi I would want to be. Not petty, or evil, but fair and just. I wouldn't execute someone out of anger or hatred. I'd do it because they needed to die.

I've kind of always felt that Jedi have had a superiority complex and live by the motto that "Do as I say, no as I do". So even if you have to live as a hypocrite in game, it's ok, because that's normal for most Jedi, from my observation.
When a man dies, a swarm of highly charged energies deserts the body and goes out into space entering another cycle of life. These energies have an IMMORTAL nature. -Thomas Edison

Heres why.

1. The MMO aspect adds a lot more enemies to be killed.

2. None of them are named (so they don't have families, they stand there till they die)

3. If their was a choice to not kill anyone that would defeat the purpose of a war.

4. You can spare "bosses" because they are tied into a story and effect how it plays out.

5. Even some bosses you still kill in combat, you can only spare ones who have a chance of redeming themselves for light.

You're right!

Sith: "I just carved through your entire unit."
Republic Officer: "I saw, I'm ****ed, huh?"
Sith: "Yeah, you don't stand a chance."
Officer: "I crapped my pants."
Sith: "S'okay, happens all the time."
Officer: "Spare me?"
Sith: "Nah, but I'll be doing you a favor."
Officer: "What, how?"
Sith: "Dude, you failed. Your unit just got wiped out. You're going to end up on Hoth for this, man. HOTH!"
Officer: "Yeah, you're prolly right!"
Sith: "But, dude, good bennies in the Republic."
Officer: "Yeah, got good life insurance, a nice pension..."
Sith: "I'll off you then. No Hoth, and your family at least gets something."
Officer: "Dude, make it quick."
Sith: "Got'cha, bro."

Playing a Jedi Consular was nigh on impossible because of this in my mind. And because you rarely actually succeed at negotiating. The one that REALLY REALLY pissed me off was when I had succesfully negotiated the bad guys surrender then an NPC who wasn't there for the surrender speech ran in and shot the guy in the face thus initiating combat and ruining my chances for peaceful negotiations. Places where story and gameplay really don't meet well.
My 2 cents
