How is that at all fair? You've put in the hours and work to gear up and somebody wins the RNG lottery and is now more competitive than you are (at least gearwise and yes gear does make a Huge difference in WZ, who do you want healing you? The guy with 900 will +320 heals 19% crit chance +60% crit power? Or the guy with 1500 will +550 heals 38% crit chance with +100% crit power?)

And just in case your curious, when I hit 50 I purchased all purple off the AH, there wasn't a single piece of centurion gear that was superior to what I was wearing, actually I had to take a compromise and lose 18 endurance 9 crit rating 8 or 9 surge rating to gain 3 will and the set bonus cool down for heals.
The entire system is ridiculous in that way.

You know what happened when you hit RR72 in WAR? You got Royal boots. Then at 73, gloves. Then belt at 74. At 80, you could wear the whole set! So even if you've got them in your bag (my Engineer is -still- RR70) you still have to get your ranks up.

I think the ranks ought to be the important part. That's a solid, consistent way to do things... oh, unless you have to get them out of bags that can drop duplicates and basically screw you over all the time. Having 7/8 means there's a very, very small chance you'll pull a piece you need out of the bag.

Still, it was a better system than this. One set at 20, one at 40, and then the other at 50, with new ones that -all unlock- on a single rank?

Bull. Bull **** of the highest caliber. No progression. Just good luck, **** luck, and grinding one way or the other.

I wouldn't mind some sort of currency to prevent gearing out immediately as soon as you hit the correct valor rank then having nothing to look forward to between that and the next big step up on valor ranks. I still advocate for there being 3 types of bag: centurion, champion, and battlemaster. Each drops that type of comms. It takes valor rank 30 to open the champ and 60 for the battlemaster.

The oldfag kind!

...I'm not even actually old. I just inherited all my folks' D&D stuff. I actually sent a website that sells .pdfs of oldschool D&D stuff scans of my original copy of Keep on the Borderlands from 2nd Edition D&D. Magenta box and aged yellowing paper and everything!

I started with some 2nd ed but that didn't last long before 3rd launched. I played 3rd and 3.5 forever (along with legend of the five rings rpg). I got bored with 4th because it doesn't have a system I can destroy with multiclassing and/or other stupid combos. I liked 3rd because it was "easy to learn, hard to master." 4th is just easy to learn.

That's also part of why I hate random systems in MMOs though. In D&D, your combat is random to some extent (need at least some random in there) but your CHARACTER BUILDING is NOT RANDOM. That's why gearing off random bags feels so bad to me.

That makes a good deal of sense to me.

Although 'character building' in most MMORPGs is 'achieve best in slot, use cookie-cutter build', which is sort of boring in its own right. I like it when there are a few different sets; Warhammer made a good step when 'Sovereign' turned into 'Sovereign Annihilator' and 'Sovereign Guardian' or whatever it was. It's a small difference that made a big difference in the way folks played.

I think you should be able to mix and match, though, personally. Stacking just the right set bonuses and such isn't as nice as having a set bonus that works more in one direction or the other depending on the distribution of your gear from a particular tier.

Still, the problem is -getting- it, not -what it is-. What it is is a whole 'nother ball of wax; I'll be touching on that in another post at some point, but only once I've pared it down to the point where a normal human being doesn't run out of attention span before they run out of textwall.

@OP

I don't know if I agree entirely with your system. But I sure as hell hate the RNG on those champion bags.

The first 15 or so bags I opened yielded squat. Then I got about 4 earpieces in a row. After about 40-50 bags I finally got my first set piece token and bought a second one with centurion tokens.

The time and effort I put in to get this paltry offering of pvp gear is ridiculous. It hurts even more when I see a guy with ~20-30 valor in full champion.

What don't you like about the suggestion I put forth? I'm interested in hearing about possible weaknesses; I hear a lot about how good an idea it is and very little about what could be broken in it.

I'm sure you haven't read the entire huge thread, but there're a lot of spots where I go into more detail about concerns folks have.
