I'm very interested in the Commando AC, but I don't really want to run around with a gigantic canon, I'd rather have a blaster rifle. Would I ruin the AC by using a blaster rifle (i.e.: any abilities that requires the canon thing etc.)?

If you're planning to DPS, yes. The cannon is a must-have.

If you're planning to heal... well, that's a little bit more of a gray area. Technically, you don't need the assault cannon to heal, but I'd still feel pretty naked without the offensive punch that the cannon provides. Most of the time when you're out questing, you're not going to be sitting there like a bump on a log and spamming heals on your companion. You'll be shooting stuff.

To crib a line from Dos Equis: I don't always shoot stuff... but when I do, I prefer my assault cannon.

If you would like to dps with a rifle, though, Vanguard is both a sexy and powerful AC.

I was considering this, with enough points in Combat Medic to get the probe, and the rest into Assault Specialist.

Are most of the skills that make use of the canon in the Gunnery tree?

Well I didn't see anything in the tool tip descriptions at darth hater or the skill tree build that indicated the rotary cannon was required.... now, I'm bummed. I was planning on going Vanguard Tactics (DPS) since I hate the rotary cannon.

Here's a list of the Commando specific abilities:
http://db.darthhater.com/abilities/c...oper/commando/

I don't see any that have a reguirement. The most important one would be grav round...

Charged Bolts requires the assault cannon. I assume Grav Round does, too, since it's the upgrade for that ability.

Assault Specialist uses Charged Bolts.

Hail of Bolts, our only ranged AoE that's not on some kind of a cooldown, also requires the assault cannon.

If you're a Combat Medic who doesn't care about optimizing your dps output, you won't be chased down by sarlacc enforcers or anyting for equipping a blaster rifle. Just... please, PLEASE defer to a Vanguard on loot rolls if you want the same rifle s/he does.

You're going to end up gimping your DPS and even your healing due to there being medic-specific guns with medic stats on them. I know that not even having an option to use a blaster rifle is kind of annoying, because the gun is a bit... crazy, but it's an acquired taste I think.

For damage yes some abilities require the assault cannon so you would be impairing yourself.

For healing I do not believe any of them require the assault cannon, and as far as stat sticks go (aim and secondary stats) I don't think the assault cannon has a greater attribute pool than the blaster rifle in this regard (just higher weapon damage). So the same.

Most of the commando ac dps abilitys require assualt cannons. that said you still retain your blaster proficiency and your basic trooper skills. a dedicated medic commando could make due with a blaster, but as stated before your going to hurt your overall dmg in the long run.
