Even if that's the case, there is a big difference between being massively overtuned and just overtuned. Even an 8 man raid isn't going to have that gear level after only 4 weeks.
Think about it this way. Hard mode mind traps have 20-25k hp on 8man. That's extremly easy to dps down. but over 220k hp on 8man over 20seconds is impossible at the moment. Even if you can dps them down you won't get enough uptime on Soa before he hits enrage time.

Maybe they did it just to be sure that there is at least one encounter that could never be beaten before new content is released, and just hoped that there would be nobody that would take the trouble to do the math.

As said earlier, it is only a matter of time before a patch addresses this. The OP is helpful to keep people from beating their heads against an impossibility in the meantime.

As the main tank of a guild who has downed all but one of the Hard Modes and a few of the Nightmares: It isn't a simple gear check working as intended. There isn't enough gear in the game to beat a 4400 DPS requirement.

That much isn't arguable. No level of gear and no rotation posts anything near 4400 DPS. Unless they intend for the boss to be impossible for the foreseeable future, we're missing something here. And it isn't gear.

We regularly check our DPS on a 50 Champion mob on Ilum. The Council fight is also a good measure. Our highest DPS guy is around 1400 dps, and that's in an ideal tank and spank situation where I hold the mob and he burns it without ever having to move. He has a few upgrades left to get before he is BIS for certain, but once he has all the best items, he won't even be posting 2000. The stat differences just aren't high enough to buy that much DPS.

The OP is correct. If this is a gear check, it is a mathematically impossible one. I don't know whether the HP pool is bugged, but if it's not, then there is some other mechanic that is missing that they intend for us to use to take down Nightmare Soa's Mind Traps.

Sheer DPS won't get it done.

It's just like Cthun's crusher tentacles in vanilla WoW pre-fix. They're essential unkillable because it's a cawkblock.

Not even worth banging your head against it right now when HM essentially gives the same gear.

My guild has cleared everything expect NM Soa and NM Kragga, and I can tell you the needed dps for the fight is NOT possible with the current 140 gear in the game.

If the gear was to jump to 160, it would be alot closer.

It is actually not called nightmare for it's difficulty to beat but for the difficulty the developers have to fix it.

Seriously speaking - why would you want to beat SOA NM when T2 PVE weapons are better that T3 and loot in HM, just as the rakata chest piece...
Dropped both yesteday - why would I ever want to face SOA again

Soa’s mind traps unintentionally had 200k health in Nightmare Mode. This amount has been reduced significantly.
From PTR. Thank god.
