And its not bad enough you have to use one or die, but you are completely reliant on them to keep you alive, so basically this game forces you to rely on AI to play. Just sucks this is the route Bioware chose leaving the player with no real choice in the matter..putting your play in the hands of AI.
I spend most of my time running around solo while my companion does crafting stuff. The game is perfectly playable that way if you don't mind the extra difficulty.

You do have a choice, just the choice is to play with real people, later levels (not counting overleveling) you really do need a 2nd person, whether that is a companion or a real person. Just the companion lets you have a 2nd person whenever you want, where a real person might be a little harder to have whenever/wherever you want. The companions are never going to be as good as a real person (no matter how bad they are) but will fill the gaps when you don't have a friend online. Also, you do get more than one companion, so hopefully you will get one you do like later.

The companions really emphasize how weak your character really is when you don't have one out. Fighting the last boss of my story line should be an epic 1v1 battle... thanks for those heals Talos.

I think quests are probably balanced around having your companion, but it seems like you out level those quests pretty quick, especially if you doing warzones at all, so you can quest without your companion by being a little higher, and use your companion when you need to.

However, I wish they did have some classes that didn't have companions, I've never liked pets and avoid those classes in other MMO's. But since everybody has companions it might make balancing PVP more difficult if only one class didn't have a companion.

- You can choose to have your companion (and they give you 6 total, so there's choice there as well)
- You can choose not to use your companion and form groups with friend instead.
- You can choose to go slower and attempt to be more careful in your pulls.
- You can do flashpoints until the quest area becomes little easier.

How did they take away choice again? Companions are awesome. Mako's the best.

That's basically the circumstances we're in now.

The game is too easy. It wasn't just beta players rocketing to 50 before January. I bought the game about three weeks ago, leveled a gunslinger to 19 to (unnecessarily) familiarize myself with the game, and now have a 42 juggernaut that I've spent too many hours on sub-optimally with regards to leveling.

Because so many of the quests are so easy, because rewards are spoon fed entirely throughout the game, because I have a companion to cover up for any of my deficiencies and because of a quest tracking system that does everything short of actually teleporting me to the quest content and then teleporting me back to the quest giver, I can't help but feel the game is too easy.

Also, I'm pretty sure Wwwyzzerdd had two z's and only one y. Just sayin'.

Not that I mind companions myself, but it's always funny to see comments like these. Besides the fact I don't believe it's financially possible to send all 5 companions on missions 24/7 even half the time via leveling income, how far did you actually get without using a companion ? Tatooine ? Belsavis "maybe" (big maybe) depending on which class you play (and certainly not elites), and on Voss any pack of two silvers and a normal mob would rip you to shreds, most likely faster than you could kill even one of the silvers. Elites ? yeah ...

So ... no. Leveling without a companion is not really possible in this game, past a specific point, and certainly not during the home stretch to the level cap.

I love how Khem Val constantly reminds me he's going to rise up and consume me the first chance he gets and I'm forced to keep him around for no apparent reason. If it were up to me I'd have never allowed that guy on my ship.
