Because if everything was soloable and you had the option of using a companion, most would use the companion then complain about how easy the game is.

Was way too busy sending them on crafting missions to have them run around with me (Hell no was I gonna trust C2-N2 with missions or have Golden Rod accompany me). And if you really do not like companions/AI, well find someone else to group up with. I think companions are a great thing, they add a lot of value to the game.
