Companions do enhance gameplay, but their constant presence supplants traditional MMO gameplay while also engendering bad habits, and when added with the ezmode quest tracking system, these two features serve to make the game entirely single-player, except where BW explicitly demands grouping.

I hope its not a feature that other developers copy and take to excess, just as BW took instancing to excess, as it's a really cool single player feature that's completely out of place in an MMO.

And in case your rage blinded you to the obvious, you can manually control your companion.

You love the companion great! I'm glad but, why can't I have the choice to play the game without them? And don't say you do because you can't level without dying constantly without your companion.

And its not bad enough you have to use one or die, but you are completely reliant on them to keep you alive, so basically this game forces you to rely on AI to play. Just sucks this is the route Bioware chose leaving the player with no real choice in the matter..putting your play in the hands of AI.
This is one of the key features of this game, my advice is adapt to it or leave the game and search for another one where they dont implement a similar system or where it is optional.
The Lord said: "QQ enough and thou shall receive it."
The followers said: "I shall QQ my lord, i shall QQ."
And since then , not a single day passed without the QQs being heard.

Because if everything was soloable and you had the option of using a companion, most would use the companion then complain about how easy the game is.

You can level without your companions, I did. Was way too busy sending them on crafting missions to have them run around with me (Hell no was I gonna trust C2-N2 with missions or have Golden Rod accompany me).

And if you really do not like companions/AI, well find someone else to group up with.

I think companions are a great thing, they add a lot of value to the game.
