Well I grant you force attacks, but tech attacks are just no different from any normal (ie nonmagical) attack, they just have been randomly labeled tech ^^

Heck one of these "tech" attacks is even a dagger stabbing move... why would my trusty wooden shield not protect me from a dagger?

Don't misunderstand, I'm not justifying this at all...I'd prefer we'd ditch the old "wooden shield" for something different. I'm just noting the similarities as a possible explanation (which I hope I'm wrong).
Mr. Trooper, what's that pistol you have during cutscenes that you never use in combat?

Oh, this? It's my, "Executin Pistol". You haven't betrayed the Republic lately have you? HAVE YOU!?

Well you are partly correct, though in swtor pretty much everyone has "magic" and "melee" at his/her disposal.
The main problem is that the "melee" attacks are for the most part low dmg abilities that one uses to either setup the real damage or if low on energy, the real damage is pretty much exclusively done via "magic".

So we are pretty much stuck with being able to partly mitigate the low numbers by around 18% avg with tanking gear (and tanking skills), while still subject in full to all the hard hitting styles

All this of course with pretty steep impact on our ability to hurt people.

All I know is that the shield and defense stats don't seem to be that great -even in PvE. I think Immortals get 3 active abilities that absorb damage. Saber Ward, Sonic Barrier and Invincible. Those abilities work great for their duration but the shields are kinda meh.

Yeah pve is another thing that is impacted by this... some mob groups really put the hurting on tanks... pretty sure they completely bypass/ donīt trigger shields as well.

There are quite a few weapon damage attacks that are high-damage depending on the class. Personally I think the issue is more that for PvP you reap more benefit for damage builds. I can rack up metals by guarding people in Warzones but sometimes I wonder if it actually would be more helpful for my team to spec damage and just kill. Jugs don't lose their taunts and snares for specing damage stances. They just lose the ability to Guard, a little armor rating and the shield.

Jugs spec'd in Vengeance get like a flat 12% increase in damage, a conditional when snared that can boost melee damage up to 25%, bleeds, free smash and infinite rage etc etc.

Yep, apart from cooldowns tanks are pretty squishy.

Wooden shields block swords/maces/axes, but never magic.

We're classic fantasy MMO tanks dressed up as Star Wars characters. Working as intended sadly
To the extent that you describe, yes, yeah it kind of works. However, with the way that BW classifies its different kinds of damage, there are physical damages such as the rocks from Telekinetic Throw, a fist in the face from Rocket Punch and good old stabbity knives that are not mitigated by either shield or defense because they are "Force" or Kinetic (lol, physical) damage. It seems silly to me, and a lot of other people that characters can avoid or shield a lightsaber wielded by a force-user but not a knife or a punch from a non-force user.

I hope they do change this because i really do feel like just a very very ****** dps when playing against a full set of equally geared lvl 50s as a Jugg tank spec....

even with the changes though, Juggs will come out on the short end of it.

we have the most defense buffs and the lowest shield rating out of any of the tanks. so EVEN if they do change it, we will be on the losing side of the coin. I want all of us to get this shield bump because it makes sense,

but if our dmg output stays at *********** pathetic, and defense still is worthless, why would anyone roll a jugg.

I hope we do see some gawd dam yellow in this thread that more or less states,

defense will have some type of viable gain in PVP
shields will now work in PVP....

have defense rating somehow reduce peoples crit dmg or armor pen i dont know but as is, we have 3 stats that do nothing (absorbtion, defense, and shield chance)

who tested this game seriously....
"what seems to be the officer problem?"

Well this explains a lot. No wonder my shield felt so useless...
