I have a friend in my guild and I still can't add him to my friends list. It insists that he doesn't exist but I beg to differ because I have seen him in game lol. Anyways should i try adding him by right clicking his portrait next time i see him? Because Im having issues when i manually type in the name. Thanks for any support I really appreciate it.

At present, friends can only be added when they're online (otherwise you'll get the error message you're now seeing). Adding them to your list by right clicking their name in chat or on their portrait are sure methods.

I, and many others, hope this is changed soon.

You can only add people who are online. I get the same message if I try to add someone who is offline.
Do the portrait thing next time you see him if he has been online the last few times you have tried to add him.
