Seriously, they need to implement a better form of space combat. Hell, Im sure you could convince a lot of people to buy this if you told them there was nice space combat in it

Great post! I'd love to see space combat like JTL. Heck, I resubbed to Galaxies specifically for that. It's what I miss most about that game being gone

Good to see this thread again. So how many pages/posts did the old thread get to in the pre-launch forums anyway?

I too hope they implement some form of decent space exploration and combat. Being a former Eve player this is a big deal for me. Obviously having the option to play most of the time in space is wishful thinking but at least being able to spend half your time there if you so choose would be nice.

In my specific case I'll probably lose interest within a month or two once I get sick of the ground game completely. Obviously this isen't the case for everyone. But I feel given it is Star Wars and not WoW ships and space combat do have some significant role to play here.

Last I remember the space combat thread had been restarted 20 some-odd times due to the thread getting too large, so it definitely had thousands of posts.

I also want to thank a lot of the pre launch space supporters, and post launch for that matter, who've helped to keep the dream alive.

Suggestions on 3D Space flight

I wanted to throw a couple suggestions out there that might show that 3-axis flight doesnt just mean "Hey chewie lets go that way and see whats out there" or wandering aimlessly mining asteroids. Most of these scenerios can be either full flight or flight/ground force warzones/hotspots. Anyway these are just a couple of idea's i've had, if similar stuff has been posted to death then I apologise.

Escort/Assault the Frigate:

A Republic or Imperial Frigate has been damaged in battle and are trying to repair their hyperdrive systems. This is a basic defend or assault mission. Key systems would need to be destroyed before the "timer" runs out and the ship goes into lightspeed to the nearest shipyard. These systems could be destroyed either by attacking the outer hull of the ship or by landing in the damaged hanger and assaulting the frigate from within ala BF2. I can see a lot of great visuals with a large ship on the verge of being destroyed.

Astroid Field Dogfight:

Two opposing capital ships have spotted each other across a massive astroid field. Both factions dispatch fighters into the fray. Hate to bring up JTL but one of the things I loved was dueling friends near some of the bigger astroid fields, nothing like avoiding rocks while trying to get the upper hand on an opponent. This kind of scenerio also breaks away from the circular chase that a lot of dogfights end up becoming.

Assault/Protect the Shipyard:

A capital ship comes out of hyperspace to attack an opposing orbital shipyard. Key areas of the shipyard need to be attacked to reduce shields and power to certain systems. Players would be able to man anti air turrets within the shipyard and I can see a alderaan warzone like cannon or two firing at the capital ship. The cannon could be damaged by either pilots or ground forces and can also be repaired by the defenders from within. First to destroy the shipyard or capital wins.

Faction Fleet Showdown:

Classic BF2 Scenerio. Two opposing fleets fight for control of the sector. Multiple Frigates, two capital flag ships, and a ton of fighters. Taking down the opposing factions flag ship wins the battle and can be done either with a ground assault force or with bombers attacking the outer hull.

Into the Nebula:

A Large asteroid has been found to be rich with rare mineral, The only problem is it sits within a massive Nebula. The nebula's Ionic properties make it dangerous for Capital Ships to enter so both the Sith and Republic have dispatched a squadron of fighters to claim the prize. The nebula could have effects such as low to no radar use, limited shields, mineral enriched mini asteroids that explode when shot, etc. Can see this as a more classic 'reduce the enemy tickets/reinforcements' style zone.

Destroy the Station:

This is more of a pve/raid idea taken straight from Return of the Jedi. It basically involves a ground team on the planets surface taking out the shield generator of an orbiting space station while a pilot team fights off frigates, capital ships, and fighters and hitting the station once the shield is down. Situations happening in one of the battles could have an effect on the other such as the pilots taking out a capital ship that is sending reinforcements against the players on the ground, or the the players on the ground knocking out a relay antenna disrupting the communications of the protecting fleet resulting in a damage reduction bonus for the pilots.

While I like this kind of combat, I don't think it belongs in this game. The current missions are good because they have a specific duration.

I know you answered this in your OP but I think you are mistaken. It will deflate the player count in the game. IE more players will be up in space and therefore the planets would be less populated. I have no problem regarding people spending their payed subscription time to do what they want. However, it does become a problem when what they want factors into what other players DON'T want.

Player counts on each planet are incredibly low even now. If space combat is made more like this then more players will gravitate to it and that will cause populations on the ground to even further dwindle. Planets that have 10-20 players on them on average would turn into 5-12 players. The point of an MMO is to be with other people. But by making too many areas for people to explore you cause the density of players to fall dramatically.

I'd be all for an improved space combat like this if it didn't have an impact on player numbers, but that is just too big a factor, imo, to make improving space combat like this worth while.

Just did my first space combat missions last night, and while they were fun at first because it was something different, it left a lot to be desired. I really hope that the "tube" model is simply a taste of more to come, as there is so much potential in a 3-axis space combat model in both PvE and PvP.

There certainly is space to do something new, but yeah they risk requiring alot of computer power to play anything that build another engine into.

The current works well i enjoy it, enough as most people do, there could be more missions more change more differences etc.

I do feel like i should mention the best time i have had playing a starwars flight sim, was the "Battle for endor" Freeware floating around on the internet.

Its mostly boxes, But it does what it does and does it well.

Something like that with updated models would be awesome but it would also take away from ground mmo a lot.
Right now i have little intention of leaving my ship to do anything else if i can do daily missions + sending my companions to the salt mines, it will encourage people just to play that for the entire session and never enter an instance.

Right now it isn't a great idea, Communitys are still being built on my server its still hard to get groups together to do anything 40+

We don't want to take more people away from that.

I do think however once a lfg system not the one in wow..
Has been setup that this should be the next kind of goal not taking away from content updates but something they can surprise us with a few patches down the road.

Good to see this post again. Still saddens me when I think about "what could have been", don't get me wrong I think SWTOR is a pretty decent game but still so much potential. For as long as they've been working on this game I wonder what happened when they decided to put what we have in the game.. In the game.
