How much you want to bet the choice to use the Hero engine was forced by management and not chosen by the engineers?

Game has been out for 20 days. Cancel your subs if you want, you'll be back when things have stabilized. Or go back to playing WoW on your POS 5 year old comp you never upgraded and stop QQing. mkay?

The question is:

Why didn't they take full advantage of the Hero engine? It's actually a very advanced and powerful engine. Yet TOR doesn't utilize any of its advanced features. It's so...vanilla.

We showed the game to our friend Gordon Walton. We had known Gordon for many years, back in the days when he worked for Kesmai, our late great competitor. Gordon had since been with Sony for its Star Wars Galaxies game among other places. He knows games, especially online games.

Not only did we show him the game, but because Gordon knew us so well we showed him the development tools we had built around our special process – building the game online, in realtime, with tools for the entire team all in one package.

“I need this,” said Gordon. “I am about to start a special project and these tools will let us build and prototype fast and get something running in a hurry.” Gordon is not an excitable guy by nature but this had his adrenaline flowing. “This is just what I need! I want to license your engine.”

We had thought about offering our engine and tools to developers but we had expected that we would have to actually ship a game first, like Epic did with Unreal Tournament before they licensed the original Unreal Engine.

“It’s not productized yet,” we told Gordon. “There are whole sections of code that is only roughed in and not optimized for performance or security. And there are very few comments and very little documentation.”

He didn’t care. “We are going to have tons of engineers. We can finish it ourselves. We’re going to want to modify your source code for our special project anyway."

Does this help us understand the engine in anyway? >_<

All stuff to do with their database and server issues. The gameplay, itself, was smooth as silk. It still is, and it's one of the most responsive systems ever. I can link you a video to show the hurrendous difference between WoW and SWTOR - in terms of responsiveness, of course - if you like.

Are you Amish or something? I guess not seeing as you are posting on the internet.

There are improvements I'd like to see on my car, doesn't mean Im gonna go out and build one myself. Or are you simply saying you can't hold an opinion on something unless you have built one of them yourself?

If you behave like a peasant (or fool) I guess you will be treated like one.

It's not. There is an official sticky thread at the top of this forum about skill/ability lag. BW acknowledge it and are working on fixing it. QED.

Someone correct me if im wrong but a good amount of profits made by SWTOR goes to HeroEngine right?

Seems to me it wouldve been better if they made their own engine since they now have to share profits between 4 companies (EA,BioWare,LucasArts,HeroEngine).
