Not sure it's really meant to be a reference. Serenity is a word. It's used in a lot of things. War and AA guns are also somewhat of a theme, considering there is a galaxy-wide war going on, and the galaxy centers around space flight. They could have done it on purpose, for sure. However it could also just have happened to work out that way.

It's why Reynolds named the ship Serenity (Firefly is her class).
