Smash in PVE:

==========================

Smash spec. The much despised spec of Warriors and Knights in PvP. We know all to well the huge numbers these guys do in PvP (because people, among other things, like to stack up). But how about PvE? Why isn’t Smash spec as popular? There are a good number of boss encounters right now that give players the opportunity to AoE. From Dash’roode to Titan-6 in Darvannis and Writhing Horror to Operator in Asation. Here are some of the fights that offer multiple targets found in the newer ops:

  • Draxus
  • Grob’thok
  • Corruptor Zero
  • Bestia
  • Calphayus
  • Dread Masters

That’s at least half the bosses in the two new operations. As long as your Smash hits another target, that’s already increasing its damage by 100%. If your 7000 Smash hits three targets (Draxus) that’s tripling its damage up to 21,000!

LOL IT’S JUST AOE FLUFF DAMAGE

But alas some people tend to downgrade the value of AoE a lot. You can’t blame them though. The multi-boss specific fights in the previous tier was made so that any damage gets healed to full when one of the “bosses” are killed. That makes AoE practically fluff DPS. As for adds though… those adds can be powerful and should not be scoffed at. I guess they haven’t tried eight Annihilation Marauders in 16-man NiM Operator IX. As for DF and DP, we’ll just have to wait till NiM comes out.

THEY DON’T HEAL TO FULL ANYMORE

The best part in this tier of operation is that BioWare removed some of the heal-to-full boss mechanics that we’ve previously seen in TFB and S&V. The Dread Masters don’t heal to full when one of them “dies.” The nature of the fight is that you have to bring them down all at the same ish time. Very unike Cartel Warlords and Dread Council (which is great!). Let’s look at Draxus. First-the adds don’t heal to full (which makes AoE relevant), second-the adds are clumped up (which makes AoE ideal), and third-the adds are very dangerous (which makes AoEing them down vital)! AoE them down fast and hard and leave one alive while, this time, YOUR group heals-to-full.

SMASH SINGLE TARGET IS WEAK

The lay PVE person would say,

Lol Smash PVE is horrible single target DPS

I would say,

Really? Here’s a 3.1K pushed parse in mix Underworld Kell Dragon gear with (72) MH, (78) Relic and Shadowed earpiece. http://www.torparse.com/a/458237/time/1381816868/1381817176/0/Overview

That is a lot of potential DPS in boss fights. For which encounters you might ask? Just around 70% of the entire Oricon operations.

  1. Draxus (despoilers, corruptors, subteroths…)
  2. Grob’thok (those ugnaughts)
  3. Corruptor Zero (those wretched robots)
  4. Bestia (those wreteched critters)
  5. Calphayus (those crystals, you can and you should aoe them down during downtime)
  6. Dread Masters (final and most crucial part. the soft-enrage at the sith holocron)
  7. Nefra (doesn’t count. a level 50 Sith Warrior with no Advanced Class can probably down this boss no problem)

Thanks for posting this Paowee, I've actually started running Rage for PvE and I been stuck around 2700 in my 72s. I'll check it out hopefully to close the gap b/w my Veng and Rage parses.

Edit: 2800 on 3rd try. Made a few mistakes because muscle memory isn't the easiest thing to overcome. Definitely think 2900-3K is doable with my current gear.

Yw! Also added Set bonus to the OP.

Vengeance is a bit inconsistent right now (and everyone knows this and it has also been discussed in the Jugg Q&A). Rage has a simpler rotation on the dummy and can be more easily applied in an Ops setting. Not to mention Rage has more benefits than liabilities in an actual raid compared to Vengeance where Ravage can be clipped due to red reticles and boss movement. Rage on the other hand gets more DPS in an actual raid setting because of the presence of multiple targets and less reliance on Ravage to do its max DPS.

Heh, good stuff bud. I wish Oricon wasn't so Kool, for now I find myself grinding pve(yes I'm losing my mind). I. Cannot. Believe. The. Piss-poor. Stats. That. Verpine. Possesses. Bioware sucks.

I augmented my old warhero power relics, swapped crystals...I have just over 900 melee bonus damage. How does that compare to what you guys have, or should I stick with proc relics?

I'm at 1086, using my old EWH relics. Honestly I'm not sure if should just keep using them or switch to power proc ones. I've been toying with the idea of switching to the power proc and using Enraged Defense's healing on CD to see if I can imitate the Sniper/Annihilation Mara healing exploit, not sure what type of stress that would put on the rotation though.

Clever.

It is of course with no disrespect to you, that I must frown upon the dismal state this game is in. We as players shouldn't have to find ways to exploit to become competitive with other classes. I know you understand what I mean.

But hey!!! Soon everyone can fly around in a freaking spaceship and barrel roll. Role players can use the force when they spam their laser canons.... LoooooL

Really...there's got to be something other than ESO, or Failstar on the way. I might download Rome2 tonight for a laugh.

I'm doing about 240 dps less than my vengeance parses. I'm following the guide as much as I can and my skill usages are pretty much in line with Mauull's when I clip his to the original 5 minute parse. Any suggestions? I know I messed up once near the end by using enrage before I got rid of my shockwave stacks from crush, but other than that, I was only above 2700 for a couple of seconds.

This parse was using marauder set bonus and could not use saber throw. with the jugg 2-pc bonus assault would be replaced with saber throw which is more dps than assault. Green is where you did more, red is where you did less.

So I gather those 4 vicious slashes he has more than me allowed him to get the two more smashes. FS on cooldown instead of trying to save it for cascading power? If so Mauull would have had 25 FS, not 22. Our parses were clipped at different spots so that's why he got off one more Crush than me and I had one more Ravage, as well as Sunder.

I guess was afraid I was spamming vicious slash too much. I'm not sure how these kinds of mistakes can drop me 240 dps, though. I'll hit up another parse soon and try it again.

There is no way to cut your parses since his was set at 5m 6 seconds followed by 5m 8 seconds while yours was at 5m 7 and 5m 10. Something like that... There are other variables like crit chance and gear that can account for the difference in DPS. The MOST important thing to look at when viewing and comparing parses isn't the DPS number that appears on torparse. It is the # of hits or # of attacks. Once you turn turn all those Red into Greens (thus being more efficient than him at using your abilities) then you can say, when all things become equal, that you WILL do mroe DPS than him. Remember parses = practicing rotations. The DPS numbers shouldn't matter as long as you look into the parse and know where you lacked or gained.

In the meantime, i've finished the Focus Guardian version. If anyone has or can make a pve video / parsing video using the guide (Heightened Power -> Exhaustion, MS, BS) that would be great. I'll add it to the page.

I'm well aware of those facts, but I hope they help someone else looking at the thread. I just need more practice with Rage. I've spent hours looking at Veng parses and have pretty much perfected the rotation (RNG gods cooperating for the most part as well) and have matched the top veng juggs skill use for skill use with that. Just gotta get used to this stuff too. I appreciate you taking the time for the feedback, Paowee. Keep on keepin' on. Love the website.
