Opinion? It's a good idea for a post like this. Many coming in to SWTOR probably have never played MMOs before. Some of the verbage needs to be explained - having something like this handy is a good way to get it started.

I'd say just make sure you keep it updated as different types of slang start to appear in SWTOR. Good job! I'd give you a few credits but I'm all out right now. :D

The term Zerg comes from Starcraft 2 and it means (here and everywere) a massive amount of people agaist something. Think about 100 people vs one boss or something like that.

Thankyou, updated.

Thankyou all for your posts :)

If you have any more Frequently used and more widely known, I would love to add them to the list.

  • 5 weeks later...

A few errors in the "raids" section. They're not raids in this game, they're ops. And you mention 13 instead of 16.

"Operations" should probably also be added to the terminology section because it might not be obvious that ops are raids.

And, just as a thought, this might be better stickied in the new users' forum than here, IMHO.

Just wanted to clarify 'Twinking' - generally, in most MMO's (because TOR has many level locked items, suppose it could be different), 'twinking' refers not to necessarily getting the best gear at your level, but to push yourself into gear normally intended for higher levels.

E.G. If I were level 10 but had level 13 gear, you might say I was a 'twink' or had 'twinked' into that gear, as most level 10's are going to use level 10 or 11 gear. Twinking is normally applicable when you say, use buffs, items, armor, gear to 'ladder' your way into higher level gear. It's usually more expensive than just using regular gear as you progress, and often takes more time.

So far, due to a lack of buffs and nearly everything being level locked (even mods), I haven't really seen any 'twinking'. The closest thing I've seen is getting all blue/purple items, etc, but I don't consider that twinking as it's stuff that you can easily obtain with normal looting/crafting, and only gives you a couple level's worth difference in stats.

Just my two thoughts. Also, noone I know of uses 'OS' ingame - nor have I seen it used. I've seen offspec written out, but since OS is often used as 'operating system' and describing system specs, most people tend to shy away from using it in TOR's context. If you ask in chat "Hey, what's your OS?" I'm going to say "Windows 7 Ult," - not "Oh, my offspec is X"

1. The first section is titled Basic SWTOR Abbreviations but the vast majority came from older games, many from WoW specifically, or the internet in general.

2. Pretty sure you made up most of your AC terms.

AC Advanced Class

Shad – Shadow

Sage – Sage

Sent – Sentinel

Guad – Guardian

Comm – Commando

Van – Vanguard

Gun – Gunslinger

Sco Scoundrel

PowT – Powertech

Mer – Mercenary

Oper – Operative

Snipe – Sniper

Sorce – Sorceror

Assas – Assassin

Jug – Juggernaut

Mar – Marauder

Mercenary is usually shortened to Merc

Assassin is usually shortened to Sin

Sorceror is usually shortened to Sorc (pronounced sork)

Never seen Sco or Snipe or Mar or Shad

The rest are correct

3. I lost interest after your obviously made up AC terms. Nice try though. I suppose someone new to the gaming world may find it useful...

I dont know why nobody has pointed out this before but the whole first section is just a copy paste from a similar list for World of Warcraft and does in fact include quite many words and terms that have absolutely nothing to do with SWTOR and only exist in wow.

Would have been a good idea to edit those out.

Addon(s) – Third party programs that are added to the game to customize it in such a way

There are no addons in SWTOR

Dailies – Refers to daily repeatable quests players do for reputation or money

Well there are dailies in this game too, but no such thing as "reputation". This is from wow

FP – Flight Path

No such thing in SWTOR. Well there is the taxi system that kind of serves similar purpose, but they would not be called FP

Also FP = Flashpoint

Gearscore/GS – An addon which is an outdated version of item level.

An addon for World of warcraft. There is not anything like that in SWTOR

GM – Game Master, a person who works for Bioware

Well you got that right. I'm actually surprised that you actually had that one corrected so that it does not say Blizzard

Heirloom – Another word for BoA gear.

Only WOW has heirlooms

HK - Honor Kill, you receive honor for killing another player.

Only WoW has honor points

iLvl – Item Level. Appears on gear as: “Item Level 15”. Needs no addon

Again a wow term. While items in swtor kind of have levels, there is not same kind of item level system that is refered here

LFW - Looking For Work, used by people with maxed professions

They are called crewskills, not professions in this game

OS – OffSpec, the spec a person uses least (Opposite of Main or Primary Spec)

There is no dual spec in this game at the moment, so no such thing as offspec. (it is possible there will be in the future)

Proc – Indicates an ability with a chance to occur, such as certain trinkets.

another copy paste from a wow list

Spec – Specialization. Refers to player talent trees.

They are actually called skill trees in this game (although majority of players do still call them talent trees)

Stats – Statistics. Refers to how much agility, stamina, spirit, intellect, etc is on a given object.

While "stat" is a term that applies to this game too, what you have just listed (much agility, stamina, spirit, intellect) are stats that only exist in World of Warcraft. No such stats in this game

Twink – A player with the best gear in each slot for their level, usually with disabled XP

I dont think it is possible to disable xp gain in this game at the moment

OOF / OOM – Out of Focus/Mana (Usually said by healers & Casters)

Mana? Focus? No such things in this game

Raid – An instance with harder bosses, requiring more than the usual 5 players

In this game they are called operations.

And the normal (non operation) group is 4 not 5 players

Recount – An addon some people use to display damage output or heal output.

WoW addon. No such thing in this game.

Rez – Resurrect, a spell used by DKs and any class with a healing tree.

There are no Death Knights in this game. Also all classes here can res, although only healing classes/advanced classes can res in combat

Others might be ok to use in this game as such, unless I missed something...
