How do loot drops work in Operations?

I'm trying to find some information on this after a guildmate told us the system is supposedly a lot different from previous MMO's.

 

What he tells us after having been on a PUG raid is that when an item drops, for example a chestpiece that is meant for Sith Sorcerors, only the class its meant for can loot it and there will be one drop for each player of that class.

 

It sounds interesting and with the potential to eliminate a lot of loot distribution drama. But is that really how it works?

 

If not, can someone please give us a few details on how it works? Is it like WoW, Rift and so on where 2-3 random items drop and the raid then needs to decide on how to distribute them through whatever method you prefer?

In normal mode operations the loot is distributed by random chance to people - with little consideration of their current needs, the needs of the raid or their spec.

 

However you roll on schematics and crafting items.

 

In Hard modes etc it works more like a conventional master looter situation

Also in normal mode, you can forget about getting that "assigned" loot out of a chest.

It bugs out and gives 'Access denied'

 

 

We figured this out lastnight.. If you make the person raid leader who has something to loot.. They could loot the chest..

 

 

We couldnt open both chests and was a little bit upset running past them on our Soa attempts for the night... One of the people who had loot on them said hey give me lead and was able to loot... So we looted all of the 2 chests an hour or so after they were originally open!

Got no problem getting loot from chests yesterday, but the system is pretty annoying, when you have more than 1 person of a class and it assigns some loot to the person that need it less.

 

You get Tionese comm/crystals from all bosses , crafting alloys and schematics (you roll on them) and random loot asigned by the system (normally 2-3 pieces on 8m)
