Please stay on the topic of music only, for TFA and TLJ:

 

Is anyone else as underwhelmed as I am by the music? I actually like the small bits that have been picked out for trailers and commercials, but in the films themselves I just don't get the "feels". For example, I actually like TPM and I think I can pin it down to one moment, when Duel of the Fates is playing during the Darth Maul fight. That moment pretty much made up for the whole underutilizing of his character.

 

How much more would we like the Phasma vs. Finn fight in TLJ if there was some massive new anthem injecting hype into the fight? The visuals of Finns blade in Phasma's mask pretty much match the visual of Darth Maul's dual saber igniting but the music just doesn't back it up.

and honestly wouldn't think any of the new songs would clearly belong in say a top 10 list like this.

No. Heck no! The music is still brilliant, imo.

i think the movie being horrible in general was the biggest thing holding it back.

I think great music enhances a fight scene, but the audience needs to be invested in the fight. Using your example from TPM, Maul came across as a threat and the audience was interested in Obi wan's character so the music there kicked the fight up another notch. But the fight between Plasma and Flinn? Plasma had done nothing so far except walk around in shiny armor and Flinn had just come out of an extremely long (and to me boring) casino subplot. I had no emotional investment in either character. If the music there had been epic, I think it would have pushed the fight into parody status.

But overall, I would agree that the music lately has been lacking. Earlier movies had music that became iconic: hum a few bars and most people might not know the name but would know it was Star Wars. But the last two? It's just generic movie music.

Well, it was his first battle, so he was probably assigned to janitorial services while he was in training. (That's the best I got.)

 

Or he was lying.

 

On topic - I thought the music in that TFA opening scene was spot on!
