Best DPS class? Is there one?

I was wondering what would be the best dps class. But, because there are many things affecting one's damage output, maybe we can consider what follows :

Hypothesis 1 : The player knows how to play its class

Hypothesis 2 : Consider equivalent gear

That question came to my mind when I read people say that SWTOR is a VERY gear dependant game. I would think it's true, but how much dependant? That's why I was wondering if, maybe, every damage class has similar damage output (if we suppose good gear and skills).

What do you think?

I think the majority of the DPS specs are very close to each other. Assassin/Shadow and Powertech/Vanguard might be a little on the low side, but I'm not 100% sure about that. PvE, strictly speaking.

The effectiveness of a particular player/class combo is more down to what works best for that player's style rather than any one class being better than another class.

agreed. you have people claiming that a class may be underpowered at times, and then at that same moment you will find players that excel with that class. its a matter of learning your role/class and playing it effectively

Well now in the new patch (2.2.1) It might be marauder Sniper or assassin perhaps because they are dominant in PvP, so just thought. Although I do agree with Skodan. It really does matter how you play your class and what gear you get. Edited by crqp

I'm not going to jump up and down and say that dummy parses mean nothing (they are relevant), but if you search for actual fights involving these players, you begin to see the typical post 2.0 dps hierarchy appear.

The best way to measure DPS is with a dummy.. It is the closest you can get to laboratory conditions to get a baseline.. Better still people should be doing this tests without gear of any kind and just the basic of weapons.. Preferably a weapon with as small and as few stats as possible.. Limit the variables as much as possible.. That will give you the base DPS for any character.. Based strictly on player ability, character class, base stats, and spec.. The more variables you can eliminate will give you the most accuracy..

Everyone knows that fighting a real target, be it another player or a boss is much different.. Moving around and dodging stuff is horrible for someone's timing and rotation..

But to answer the OP's question.. I believe the best way to test them is described above.. With the least amount of variables..

I will say that Bioware leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to designing gear sets.. It is very hard to get a full BIS set for any character.. Not to mention time consuming..

In terms of actual Operation DPS - Sniper is (for the most part) the best.

Reasoning:

1) Fights where you don't have to move, snipers will own everyone - especially if other DPS have to move, luckily they've made the newer fights so that everyone has to move, but for the most part in S&V a sniper can find a good spot to sit down and keep up max DPS - melee with always have downtime when they have to travel.

2) Fights where you do move, fights like the dread guard where you can either be moving a lot or a little, you only have to move ~5 steps in a direction, and get back into cover and free snipe, its very easy to keep your rotation (if you know what you're doing.)

3) Melee is ALWAYS the disadvantage: So out of the 8 AC, Jugg/Mara/Sin/Powertech/Operative are the melee (or damn near close to melee), that's 5/8 - I personally haven't seen a sorc DPS that can compare with a sniper, and mercs are close-ish, but I'll still take a sniper over.

4) Raid utility: Self-cleanse and a shield that reduces damage by 20%, nuff said.

5) No "on proc" abilities: Other classes are hampered down by abilities that have a proc% the sniper rotation is rather straight forward to get the maximum DPS possible, as you're not praying that something will proc and refresh a cooldown.

There are other factors to consider beyond strictly damage numbers. Many fights favor ranged DPS, some fights have mechanics that can be avoided completely by certain classes, and some fights allow certain classes/specs to artificially inflate their numbers (I'm looking at Rage spec on Warlords)..

Then you add in toys. When you take the raw numbers, add in range and cheese mechanics, we are left with the Sniper/GS as the best DPS class right now.

A lot of the peopl playing this game does not consider this though. PvP is a totally different ball game when it comes to dps charts. These charts are proven for PvE but they are wrong for PVP.

Yes well in 2.2.1 PvP became more intense, so sniper marauder are quite good with merc moving up the charts in PvE and PvP because I have seen it and they snowballed so hard almost killing me in 5 hits! PvE though have to say goes to maybe Vanguard, it has gotten much better:rak_03:

Few things,

1) that Shadow/Assassin parse is actually a Madness Sorcerer parse (mine). Torparse currently has a bug that marks a Madness Sorcerer as an Assassin. The top Assassin/Shadow parse would be 2721 from Wild-berry

2) I would use the parses from DPS Leaderboard 2.0+ as they have parses which are looked at in order to tell if someone had outside help.

Which means that the answer is the same today as it was when SWTOR launched: sentinel/marauder. Best DPS class. Best PvP class.

Any time someone asks about DD classes I always assume they mean PvP. DPS in PvE is not really all that critical. If you do more damage than Vette and can move out of the fire, your good enough for most things.

It always has been and still to this day is

MDPS Mara/sent

RDPS Sniper/Gunslinger

End of list.

Any other class that can fill 2 roles IE Tank/Dps Heal/DPs are all about the same when they opt for the DPS spec but all are below the 2 3 tree DPS specs. IE Mara/Sent Sniper/GS

don't know about the rest since I only looked at commando since that is my class but that parse is useless crap its only 64 sec long if the parse is not at least 10-15 min long its not even worth looking at
