Casinos, baby!

Five years from now, we'll still keep reading this kind of stuff... "Baby steps, baby steps".

There is a reason for that ------> MMOs ARE baby step progressions of content over the years of the life cycle of the game.

Need instant gratification? -----> stick with console games and buy a new one every week.

Now if players embrace the casino, rather then crapping all over it 7/24 once it goes live, it could very well be they will expand the types of games of chance in the casino and make it a recurring event.

Sooo what you are saying is, it will be a one time only event then. :p

To drain credits from players in anticipation of Strongholds in August, making cartel coin purchases more likely.

Ah, yes. "[Game Feature X] is just a ruse to get you to waste your [currency] so that you don't have [currency] to use for [Game Feature Y]"

Why do people flop this out with pretty much every game feature? I mean, a month ago someone claimed that Strongholds was just a way of draining coins so that people would buy coins when the next expansion/race/cartel-gear was released. So, why do we care if it drains credits that we were going to use for something that was just draining coins for something else that --if we're honest with ourselves-- we were just going to claim was draining credits/coins for something else in the future.

Let's ignore the fact that credits are really easy to build up once you've got a Level 55 character, and that Bioware is actually handing a significant gift with Strongholds that will save subscribers from spending a lot of credits/coins that people seem so torn about the value of.

How about this? How about we all spend credits and coins on stuff that amuses us, and quit trying to make up some conspiracy that Bioware is trying to force us to spend credits/coins on [thing we don't like] instead of [thing we do like in the future]. Or, maybe I like spending on both? Who care's which one I spend credits on so long as I enjoy it? Or maybe I don't. It's just credits. I can have another million next week just by running dailies.

Nar Shaddaa Casino. For the first time, players are invited to the casinos on Nar Shaddaa to try their luck on the slot machines. Credits can be used to purchase tokens, which in turn can be used on slot machines. Lucky winners will receive certificates that can be traded in for unique rewards that will only be distributed during the Nar Shaddaa Nightlife event. This event will run from June 10th to August 19th.

hahahahaha awesome

I am NOT happy with this!

all my credits will be gone...

Too bad it's just an event. It would have been a nice permanent addition for everyone to enjoy, whenever they felt like having 'a night out' with their toon. :)

This is probably an introduction to a permanent feature. They want to see how it's received. I'm sure we will get it permanent at some point ;)

Well.... they were pretty clear in their announcement.

Casino slots, which you feed with tokens (which you buy in game with in game credits), and winnings are in the form of a new trade currency of some form. This is not an unusual approach for MMO devs by the way..... as it effectively inoculates the game from local gambling laws and restrictions around the world..

That was a concern of mine too. There are anti-internet gambling laws on the books, and this would have been a touch close to those. I'm sure BW's legal staff combed over this repeatedly.

Maybe this event is like WoW's Darkmoon Faire - a recurring event with minigames and vanity items.

Though I must say, I wish my mom were alive to see this. She enjoyed Star Wars, and loved casinos and computer slot machine games. Were she still around, I'd have her play while I'm at work. :p

The idea is fine and I am sure I will enjoy it.

The more critical part of my brain is thinking:

"Oh look they have cast away all pretense and have distilled MMO PVE down to the component parts: Playing a slot machine for a chance at prizes."

At least we will not have to fight our way through trash and boss fights in order to spin the wheel.

Funny you should say that I'm looking forward to the bounty hunter events during the night life event. Kiting those crooks into the casino and causing some mayhem , now that will be very star wars :).

Cheers,

BadOrb.

What is everyone so hyped about? Maybe I am just not getting how this is a good thing for the game?

If I wanted to play slots... there are a ton of places I can do that.. Free or For Real Money. Hell, I am pretty sure I can find a Star Wars themed online slot machine out there somewhere... why in the world would I want to sign into this game, level a character... to go sit in a casino.

I suppose, for the retired toons... it would be like the Senior Citizen Center trips to the penny slots in Vegas... there'll probably be a buffet to.

For the same reason someone would sit down and play a soccer game.

For the same reason someone plays chess on a computer instead of on a board.

For the same reason some people want to fish in the game (which they can't).

People have various definitions of what is fun and what is not.

Love me them slots....

Suppose this gives a lot of people something to do between boring que times....

I know if anything will retain players its slot machines. Soon to come to SWTOR.....the slot machine app for only 400 cartels coins you can play a slot machine to win more re-skinned armor.

Going to sub for life right now.

Except the Slot machines will take Credits and not Cartel Coins.

Sarcasm aside, anything new to the game is likely to draw in additional players. This is no different.

And if it gives the PVPers and the queue-crowd something to do in between queues, so much the better.

I get that. People enjoy those things... I do myself.. I play a few console games myself... Soccer being one. However, I wouldn't look to SW:TOR to play soccer... thats not why I play this game... there are games focused solely on Soccer, which will offer a far better experience then playing it as a mini-game here... it is also no where near the intent (as I see it) of this game.

I am not asking why have the game... I'm asking how does having slots in SW:TOR do for THIS game.

It gives people something to do when they get tired of doing other stuff. It's an option. More to the point, in my opinion, it's them testing the concept of mini-games within TOR itself, something that people have wanted for years now.

To put it into perspective, replace the word 'soccer' in your post with the word 'PVP'.

I think this is awesome, but at the same time slightly annoyed, me and some of my guildies have spent weeks writing up an event and various SW based games to play using the roll systems etc for a RP event to all wanting a go, and just when we are ready to make it happen BW announce this.. sorta crippling out event a bit :-/

Meh hopefully we can utilise it and work it in with our own server/guild event

As a game play mechanic what does playing a slot machine offer me.

I'm thinking I click on the slot machine, credits deducted and 1% of the time I get a certificate for some yellow and green recoloured gear (which I could have made by using a dye pack).

Most of the fruit machines suppliers have found adding nudges, bonuses, additional win lines and the illusion of skill has made the gambling experience more addictive. If the extent is click, credits deducted, 'you didn't win this time' click, credits deducted. 'you didn't win this time'. I don't see how this add much. Its like watching someone else play the vegas slots.

Gives people stuff to do in between queues or when they get bored of Ops/FPs/WZs/Leveling/achievements
