Star Wars: The Old Republic – State of the Game

Might as well put in my two cents as well.

1. This is for the players... For those of you still experiencing 1.4 Update woes, try uninstalling (and i mean completely wiping the game from your system...programs files, AppData files, registry, everything,) and then start fresh. I'm a computer technician so this may be easier for some than others to do. The reason I am stating to do this is because I was still having to play in Windowed mode after the "fixes" but recently I completely wiped my hard drive, reformatted, and installed Windows 8 (up from Windows 7) and now I have no issues playing Full Screen with maxed out setting. Doing a wipe-and-load just to see if you and improve performance on a game is a bit extreme but if nothing else has worked for you this might. Besides, a wipe-and-load generally improves performance of your entire system so it might be worth it. Just remember to backup your data (don't backup the star wars stuff...start fresh with it).

2. Now for the subscriptions... I don't think the $15/mo is why most users are leaving. Like most here the issues are mainly content. Whether there isn't enough or it's issues with new content (bugs). 1.4 Update was a complete FAIL. Everyone knows it and you said it. Thank you for admitting that. As for myself the reason I've let my subscription lapse from time to time is basically because I get bored with the game. That's right...it's content again. The game is basically the same thing for hours on end just in different environments. Hack and slash your enemies with the only real break from that being the space missions which I enjoy for this reason. As of right now I don't play Operations, Flashpoints, etc because...it's just more hack and slash. Eventually I just get so bored that I let my subscription lapse for 2-3 months and play more other games. (Currently I'm very engrossed in Assassin's Creed 3)

To fix this for me I would agree with more content but also completely agree with a previous poster...make the stories and content more dynamic would make SWTOR leaps and bonds more fun to play. Being stuck in a storyline and just replaying the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again is just boring and repetitive. (see how that "and over" just bored you... yeah, that's the stories in STWOR) Make the content dynamic and change the path according to the choices you make.

3. This leads me to content. The content need to be more. I like the 4-6 week release schedule. That means new content every month to month and a half. BUT this content is still more hack and slash. It's just new environments to do it in. So in all reality, it's not so much as new content as it's just new environments. It's the same things with new layouts and new skins. How am I suppose to get excited about this? The point is, I don't.

What can be done? Like I said above, making the storylines dynamic instead of on rails would be the biggest and best change.

Secondly, include more roles and mini-quests in the game that DOESN'T include hacking and slashing. For example: mission to resolve conflicts politically (Jedi aren't just warriors. In fact they resort to conflict as a last option. SWTOR has this backwards for the Jedi where killing is the first and only choice on missions), maybe missions to collect resources, or solve mysteries.

Thirdly, include more mini-games. Pazaak and swoop racing are a popular choices among the players. I'll admit that I often played Pazaak for hours as I did with the card game in FFVII. Provide some games with ranks so players would have something to compete at to get to the top of the lists in rank.

Lastly, make the space missions...different. I get you made them more challenging by adding shields and whatnot but I'd like to see space missions that aren't just the same missions over and over again with simply added difficulty and a name change.

It's all content content content.

On another note, I do enjoy the improvement (especially when they don't impact performance) that have been made to make the game more real. Shadows and the upcoming translucent grass and leaves for example. I'll be expecting more of these improvements as the game goes forward include updating textures with more detail and/or realism.

Oh, PS... you're overseas server issue... umm, any idiot with any common sense can tell you the simplest solution is to add another server few a few thousand bucks at most which to EA and Bioware is chump change. Let certain players have to choice to port over to the new server and BAM! Issue resolved.

is bioware make something for legacy 50? Maybe we could get legacy bank in legacy level 50

yes!!!

EDIT: It will cost 70 million credits though, so you will have to grind dailies for weeks on end. This is the time sink aspect of the game which we will getting more of under the viel of 'new content'.

1. Our game is awesome. People love it and want to play it.

2. The subscription requirement was driving away huge numbers of people who do not want to commit to paying monthly.

3. The frequency of our Game Updates was way too slow. People were leaving because we were not releasing new content fast enough to keep up with the pace at which it was being consumed.

Hello Sir,

first thanks for stepping in.

Then if I had to write one sentence about your whole blog, you are either delusional, misinformed or have no clue at all at what makes a good MMO and what are the players expectations. Regarding your position I tend to think you are fully aware of all the above but voluntarily forgetting it.

Now specifically about your three main points. As mentioned by others:

  1. The game in it's actual state isn't awesome. From the low performance of the engine to the lack of basic and commonly expected MMO features, to major design flaws, SWTOR has a lower standard than others available MMO and isn't evenly polished.
  2. We all know the subscription fee was and still will be driving away people, because the quality isn't up to the asked price. BTW your F2P model is broken in its fundations.
  3. The frequency of the game update is indeed too slow especially compared to others studios like Trion. Sadly you already failed at keeping up to your promise to deliver new content every 4-6 weeks. Furthermore the size of the content looks very thin compared to games like DDO, LotRo, Rift and so on.

Please allow me to go further. Whatever good is James Ohlen at managing projects, regarding how poorly he did in all the interviews and isn't regarded as the most talented producer, (from a player perspective), you might want not to mention him.

In your 3 chosen topics I saw none addressing the most important one being the communication between the players and the devs. Let me mention that as long as you'll keep with your actual way you're not going to deliver.

You have to implement a two way communication. Have the devs step in into the suggestion/PvP/Class... forums and discuss in a two way direction with the players. Don't forget there are also very talented people playing this game.

The best advice you should follow is simply fix your communication. And if you don't have any ideas about it, just copy what Trion is doing. Then proceed to the game issues.

Let's talk about the F2P model we're seeing on the PTS server, mind you?

In short, if you go live as is you're going to dig deeper SWTOR grave and write your name on the tombstone on top of it.

What you guys are thinking when doing things like making people pay for:

  • More slot bars: when others F2P MMO have UI addons for free
  • Unify gear color: when others F2P MMO have gear dyes for free
  • Hide head slot: F2P MMO have hide back, shoulder, gloves... for free
  • Prevent basic features like /who, emotes, use recall features...

Do you really think you're going to milk 3 million of players with that?

I can assure you, even the TOR vets won't come back when they'll see how limited they are.

Especially when they'll realise there's so few new content!

You are pretty well versed in the NGE fiasco and let's be realistic here: you won't earn more paying customers than what you had before with this F2P model. Don't make the same mistake twice, please.

Actually the main issue with your F2P model is that you request people not to pay for the content but for the tools required to enjoy it. Seems to me you are aiming sideways...

BTW I heard when you stated about delivering content faster and focusing less on V.O. content.

It's understandable but MMO wide, the V.O. story is what makes your game different than others.

And in the other fields you have less than them.

Anyway best luck to making the game better.

As a player it's all that matters.

Regards,

D.

I'm up in the air on the F2P thing. I'll most likely leave as I've seen what type of player it brings to the game. Eventually, F2P means Pay 2 Win and has been like that in several mmo cases.

I'm happy to pay 15 a month for the franchise. However, the state of the game is not in a good place. You went from how many servers to how many servers in less than a year? The general consensus; lack of CS, Lack of end game content, pvp content and balance, bugs, features, etc. That is why people don't want to pay a subscription and they won't be back just because it's F2P when the same issues are still in play.

As a software developer, I understand that some issues take time to debug. However, being a developer in the b2b world, we wouldn't have any clients if our software was in a similar state, not to mention the SLAs we have to follow as a vendor. What are your SLA's with the players? What is your mission statement?

  1. Myself et.al. have tickets queued that are easily 2 weeks old for missing BH coms after completing GF missions.

  2. The ops available can be completed before the weekend with the current reset on tuesday, leaving those that can't log in until weekeds due to family, work or school to be skipped or end up pugging with a group of unknowns who don't understand the mechanics of a raid.

  3. PVP? Just read the forums. There are tons of examples.

  4. Bugs that have been around a while or released with "new" content or "unintended consequences" of existing bug fixes.

  5. Features, what can I say, you released on an engine that doesn't really support features that were available in first gen mmos like EQ (you know like water you could swim or raid in with a water breathing buff) that I played using dial-up. And some of the ops and pvp issues could have been resolved by including VoIP like DDO, which is only a few years old. You used to be able to petition a GM (IN GAME in some MMOs) that had the authority to check logs and resolve issues on the spot. Even SWG had a better Space game and it was released how long ago before they pulled the plug.

  6. EDIT: and btw where are the perks for reaching legacy 50?

BTW, I played EQ1 for almost 6 years paying a sub and the first 2 years on a modem. Your game lacks that type depth to keep players, the only thing you have at the moment is the Star Wars franchise, no real innovation (except crafting), missing common features available in first gen MMOs and some forward thinking like VoIP.

Some info, timeframe, a screenshot etc.

I know a lot of people who are interested in this subject.

Thanks in advance.

This is what I'm looking for as well.

Can we expect more class stories down the road for each class or is it only going to be Avengers style planet stories from now on without expanded companion dialogues and unique class quests?

Why is it taking a year to implement even small changes like hood over face masks or chat bubbles? Should it really take a year for that to get worked out? Is it really acceptable that companions still don't put their lightsabers away? Hide helm for companion took a year to implement?

Can we get some kind of, any kind of confirmation that BioWare is not backing off from dialogue-heavy cinematic story? Is Makeb the best we can hope for in that department? Why has BioWare stopped talking about story?

I am more of a PVE player so my views are more towards the pve play(although I hear a lot of complaints about pvp on the server) I think the biggest problem is the content it self at end game level. It is far to easy. I understand it is hard to create a game for everyone, but endgame content should be hard to complete. Not to be on farm with in a few weeks of the new content coming out.

There is also to many levels of end game. normal, hardmode and nightmare???? By the time you are on nightmare you are so tired of running the same thing. Also it would be nice where there is an ops that has more boss fighting. Have ten or so bosses in the ops so it takes a longer time in the ops to get to the end.

One other complaint I have is gear reconition would be nice. I think all endgame gear should look the same and not be able to be moded. If you make the ops harder and harder to achieve that gear you will get more of a wow factor when you see that character that has the end game gear. At this present time in the game someone could be wearing anything and we would not really know what the toon has accomplished.

And a suggestion for lagecy can you guys tie in a bank to lagecy where all your toons can share the bank? would be so nice and I would spend a lot of credits for something like this.

you need cross faction chat pure and simple it creates hatred and pseudo celebrities in PVP zones in SWG you had rebels mix with imperials and then when they wanted to after smack talking or whatever they could go FLAG for pvp ANYWHERE and it was ON they'd use the forum and offer 30 guys to come and fight them at their location or guild base alliances were tested boys became men and all that nonsense but mainly what happened was people used forums and chat in game to create their OWN content.

Sure there was objectives but the real pull of SWG was the fact that empire and rebels mingled tatooine should of been your planet that you did this but you made the game for carebears for some reason so when you go to illum its dead because theres too many dailies to keep track of and if you get facerolled by a lone stealth character you just want to give up because you cant TEST THE WATERS in the zone

One day i will wake up and go to illum and say in general "any of you punk imperials feel like trying to take this base we got because we've done our missions here without any of you girly men trying to stop us"

and some brave guild leader will read that......and say "On our way republic scum.

and THAT bioware is how you make a great game. let the players talk to eachother make the PVP area truly all PVP area except for the 2 main bases and you will have SOOOOOO many people come back to the game.

I think this is a good first step although not exactly what im looking for. I would like to have some detaiils of what is coming down the pipe. I dont care if you say its 6 months to a year away i would like to know the details even if its a long term project. I understand that things can change in the dev cycle but i dont need to know all the specific details.

Hopefully future posts will be more specific. At leat they mentioned they need to pump out content faster.

My one thing is there is really nothing to do with companions once you finish ilum and belsavis mini story arcs for dailies. Maybe either have some solo dynamic gameplay or some dynamic events would really spice things up so i can alternated between that and doing fp's and ops. Just my two cents. Also some word on the space revamp or whatever it is you are doing

Thanks heaps for a place to discuss the statement given by mr hickman!

The first 2 sections of his blog are quite acceptable and even understandable for PR spins.

However the 3rd section really does nothing to address the needs of the oceanic player base. While some feedback is great, I believe mr hickman is totally unaware of repurcussions of delaying till F2P launches.

I have 5 lvl 50's on Master D, I also have another 2 toons on their way to lvl 50 (both are lvl 40), I've sunk approx 15 mill creds into my legacy lvl of 50. In the time I've been on master D, I have seen pop drop by approx 80-90%.

PVP queues are a joke,Pve queues are a joke and Its gotten to the point where I really don't feel like logging on at all due to the fact that I have very very limited options on what I can and can't do due to lack of server pop.

This issue is getting worse as time goes on as more and more oceanic players leave the game or server which is sending it into a further downward spiral.I loved this game but I rarely stay online for longer than 20-30 mins a day due to the fact there is nobody to do anything with. I am guilded and the 1-2 raid nights a week are only my solid play time.

F2P might fix the issue, But if it doesn't, delaying a response till you have assesed the situation will only make matters worse for your few remaining paying APAC customers

SWG has hundreds of devs trying to revive it because before SONY destroyed it because of lucas it was the most innovative PVP and PVE experience of any game of its time and still is NOONE is going to revive you should you fail because you are WOW with a Bioware twist which you said you wouldn't be and 1 million people found out you were.

THE PLAYERS ARE THE NEW CONTENT

with chat opened up you get new contenders new rivalries new turf wars new celebrities and generally a respectful comradery with alliances.

Your warzones are dead because theres no adrenaline theres no losing face............why am i even bothering the idea of a corporation understand equity in rivalry over carebearing micro transactions is never going to happen do what you want noone will be here in a year anyway.

Just makes me so mad that you could revolutionise a game over night with a simple tweak in how people network and they don't do it.

To explain further so you understand how other games operated (to help revive PVP) you could have 50 imperial players socialising in Illum lording it over the republic because they have the numbers and theres a reason for them to be there because for every scouting mission they take they get some commendations or perhaps thats now the only PVP vendor location so you get people queuing there for warzones but also listening to general chat taking place out there in the vastness of illums dangerous and then one guy thinks you know what i'll get a small army together im going to get my guild and a few others and go TAKE BACK illum for my faction because im tired of my 4 man team gettting steam rolled when i try and take this objective

Endless possibilies are now open to players now you could go find 10 stealth players and you as a tank jedi be bait and ambush or a whole medic team could go in and just out heal the content makes it self because the players have freedom.

We're working with Jeff to be able to provide consistent, regular updates for this column. We haven't quite nailed down the cadence yet, but definitely look forward to more than just a few per year.

We (well, me at least) would like these updates at least every other month if not once a month - there are still MANY issues that need to be addressed here.

2. The subscription requirement was driving away huge numbers of people who do not want to commit to paying monthly.

So they admit to this being an issue yet are keeping this a subscription based game.

They are offering and extended trial with their F2P model, but it's remaining a primarily subscription based game.. which 'huge numbers' of players do not feel is worth paying for.

Great..

I always like to see articles like these. Thank you.

I find that the frames per second are at times very low for the type of video card I have. I use an Nvidia GeForce GTX 670. With everything set on maximum and at 1920x1080 resolution it is for the most part supposed to be around 110 FPS. Places like the fleet I notice 20 or less FPS at times. That is a significant drop for a card of that magnitude. It chops and clips and lags. On other MMO's I do not have any problems at any time whatsoever in the FPS department. Only SWTOR.

I also find that PvP in warzones at level 50, a player has too many handicaps to overcome. Reason being, expertise and the change to the resolve bar have ruined the experience. Mind you resolve bar was not working properly to begin with. As I've said, there are far too many handicaps to overcome, and this does not make the experience fun at all.

Especially for new players. First- If you have to give away a set of gear right at the beginning of becoming level 50, then that is your first clue that there is something wrong. Second- Recruit gear is still a handicap, and no help in survivability against players with much more Expertise rating. I believe there are better solutions out there than Expertise rating, that will still be incredibly fun for all parties to participate in. That is your goal, is it not?

There are threads in the Suggestions tab about Expertise. The response is overwhelming from players expressing their dissatisfaction in how much the gear decides who lives and who dies. As You realize, Player vs. Player should be about knowledge and skill. Not what team is more geared than the other.

The state of the game ignores hot topics of the specific answers people are looking for.

You say the game has more updates, and that is great, but having more WZ's and more OP's and even more FPs does not solve the problem of swtor not having a day/night cycle, swoop racing, pazaak, duel arenas, tournament system with mini games, solo rank pvp, open world pvp, Large WZ's, a more sand box approach to the open world in swtor that adds to repeatability.

If swtor devs care about keeping players interest then can they afford to work on major projects that are important to keep player interested for longer?

We know they are working on the secret space project, mean while working on OP's, WZ, and FP's.

But the content people are concerned about more of is actually story. Not the WZ's and the other very easy to consume content.

BW devs are fighting an uphill battle by trying to make content that only keeps people slightly more amused without adding the things for an MMO.

If they add more WZs that is great, but then the game also needs to turn more into an e-sport. So where are the duel arenas, adn tournament systems? The solo rank for pvp?

What is the actual content being released in 6 weeks?

That is the concern. And I think this blog does not even begin to answer those questions but just re-emphasize something we already heard... people apparently leaving because there is not enough content and they will make more quicker.

Its not the lack of ops, wz, or FPs.

Problems are:

1. Ops/FPs give gear rewards to quickly.

If you are going to have a nightmare mode make the gear grind for that longer, and have something very rewarding as well.

2. No player ship decoration.

3. Chat bubbles (for Rpers)

4. Sand box pvp, guild castles, player housing, seiging - or something that offers a similar experience which is not existent in swtor. This adds longeivty to the game.

5. No 3d space combat

4. lack of mini games and social activities

6. Pazaak/swoop racing has no timeline when its going to be released

7. Story content released sooner than later.

8. No Day/night cycle

9. Reward system is not epic. Yes, we need quests that give people epic rewards from famous people. I got a vibro sword for Ludo Kreesh, and it looks like the starter vibro sword, and it was a random drop. I dont go to Ludo Kreesh tomb, or some secret place on a quest leading to the acquisition of this sword, but it was just a random drop from a FP. Thats a big *** for me.

10. Gambling. Its in the movies, its fun, and it keeps players interested. Get on it.

11. Lack of pvp development

12. Lack of choice for RPG story or side quest - only dark side or light side alignment

13. Better A.I. life routine

14. Have packs of NPCs to allow for aoe pulling

15. Character customization should be more

16. More races that look less humaniod

17. Legacy perks should allow for quicker lvling. I think this is a difficult situation to offer the right thing, but for me, the want to play all over again is reduced when the end game for me is not great. There is very little RPing for me. Other than the avatar.

If I could gamble, go to duel arenas, have a rank in pvp, or play some social mini games with other players... then those add reasons for me to have other characters. And since those things are missing, I just want to play the story, nothing else, and therefore for me, side questing after doing them, becomes a chore. I feel that lvling should be quicker until end game offers more content to allow for people interested in lvling quicker with legacy perk.

Or the want to play alts will diminish and the game will be more for people playing only one character, and that is why people left in the first place instead of playing alts. As MMO players you gave them a long story, but the not cake at the end. So you treated your game as an MMO but without the major content for that.

I know there are people who play alts, and people who still play thier characters collecting all codex, pets etc... but the big picture is what is at stake. How can the game develop something from today in its current state to make the most people happy including the ones that are happy with the current state of the game.

And I believe releasing more pets, vehicles, OPs, FPs, and WZs without major other content ... even with F2P and a cash shop can be disasterous for swtor in the long run.

So there are still questions... what is the SSSP? when is that being released?

If the SSSP is something large, and 3d space combat, and released relatively soon, then that is a very good sign of a strong future for swtor... so I am going to look at SSSP as an indicator as to what to expect as major content from swtor... other than story and PVE.

edit:

They said they had 2000 employees.

Lets say they each made around 30'000 a year. Which is a very low number. And worked on the project for 5 years.

30'000*5=150'000 per person for 5 years

2000 employees = 2000*150'000=300'000'000 just in salaries. I think we officially live in the matrix.

First of all I want to say this is a step in the right direction. Thank you Jeff. This is what Star Wars: The Old Republic needs- open dialog between creator and consumer.

While I disagree with some points, I'm going address the "state" of TOR:

1) Bugs, of course there will always be bugs, but as I'm sure the team is well aware; there are some pretty serious ones. One in particular for me is lag on the servers that happens frequently (it's not my internet connection). It's like the server has to pause to load things. This frequently will happen in the middle of fights causing me to die every so often. This is something that needs to be fixed.

2) Space Combat, the whole railway designed space combat is extremely lackluster. I play space missions simply for experience points and when I am bored. I should never do something because I'm bored. Space missions should be a great strength of TOR. Whole Star Wars video games have been created merely on the principle of Space Combat. There is so much potential in this area and that leads me to my third point.

3) Games within a game, Other than the solid story-telling experience TOR is lacking in "in-game" content. As many have mentioned I would love to see pazak (sp?), speeder racing, gambling, games such as that whose ideas have already been explored in previous KOTOR games; they merely need to be implemented in TOR. This is something that while it will take time, will do much to improve the community atmosphere of TOR. Implement leaderboards, invoke competition amongst players. We can go head to head in Warzones (more Warzones wouldn't hurt too), but gives us titles and positions to boast about within TOR. How about an arena? Gladiator style against beasts (makes me think of Geonosis). Expand such things into the cantinas, give us a reason to kick back in style within the cantinas. We can watch visual feeds of arena battles, challenge opponents in the cantinas. (Already mentioned pazak, a little twilek dancing love perhaps). It can be something pointless, but that is the point because entertainment in the form of mindless fun is amusing rather than running a glorified UPS service for various NPC characters.

4) Planet development, first of all effects, weather, day/night time cycle. Some planets are severely lacking in their unique design structures and progressively become dull. After I have completed a planet, there is very little making me want to return to them. I consider it a no-brainer that each planet should some how have developed in it, its own unique mini-game/special characteristic where people will congregate for some in game activity other than missions/Heroics/Flashpoints. Give us an interactive environment with quirks to explore rather than a static (but beautiful slate) that loses its appeal after all the missions are done. Quirks such as attractions to discover on each world. Areas without enemies where secrets can be discovered besides just datacrons. Give us a reason to scour the entire planet! Why not have people we can talk to that don't immediately beg us to go off on a mission for them. Give interaction. Sometimes the smallest of details can make a big difference!

5) Lore of KOTOR, I find the codex to be a major disappointment in the game. While the idea is good it presents little visual to draw the player in. One personal thing I would like is have an almost holographic quality/gentle moving image for codex entries (in place of the static image entries), it will make the lore of KOTOR have much more life and make it enjoyable for players to explore the various factions, planets, beasts, characters, and etc... that exist within TOR. I digress here a little but take the games; The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion/Skyrim for example. One aspect I loved from those games, was the ability to find books throughout the whole game. You could create whole story-lines and background lore through the use of books (holos in the TOR game.) The problem with TOR for me is that it is merely a universe to conquer, rather than a universe to become immersed in and one that does not enable a desire for exploration and attraction for hidden mysteries. There is little mystery, only more UPS missions to run, and characters to kill. It's a checklist.

These are just a few of the things I want explored. There is so much room for potential, don't make it harder than it is. The material is all present, the question is how to implement it into TOR. I appreciate all the team's done. I just think their is much that can be expanded. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to what is to come.

Since updates were mentioned and this falls within the subject of updates, I'll ask about new races. Specifically, for those of us who have used up most or all of our character slots, will we have the option to change a current character to a new race? It would be disappointing if the only choice we had was between deleting an existing character or not being able to use the new race.

There are a couple of questions I've asked a few times on the forums and they have remained unanswered, I'd appreciate it if you could shed some light...

Previously it was stated that there were dedicated teams working on Legacy and another dedicated team working on guilds yet there have been no changes or updates to guilds or legacy for quite some time.

Are there actually dedicated teams working on these things and if so why have there been no updates at all?

for example, Legacy goes up to 50 yet there is nothing past level 25.

also, guild functionality is incredibly basic and missing some very important tools i.e. notification emails when something is changed in the guild (i.e. someone joins/leaves)

many thanks in advance.
