Desktop Hardware Q&A

Hello everyone, was wondering if you could help me out. My desktop has the following specs...

AMD Phenom II 840T Quad core at 2.90

6 GB ram (5.75 free)

ATI Radeon HD 4200

Windows 7 64 bit

As of right now I have to have all the setting on low or off and the resolution at 1280 x 720 for this game to even try to run smoothly (at times). It is truly frustrating, most of the time I range from 7-15 fps. I would appreciate any help/advice any of you could give so that I can actually enjoy this game

Get a video card the 5.75 leads me to believe you have on board graphics and if that is true a vid card will improve performance

Start with Ram, its cheap. Get to about 4GB. Then work on the graphics card. I'd recommend AMD 6670. Then work on processor. You should be able to scrounge up this kinda money in 6 months as it shouldn't be more than 300.

Um do not go with this recomendation. Your win XP is most likely 32bit therefore you are VERY close to the max you can have on system RAM. In order for any of these recommendations to become availiable to you, you will need to upgrade to a 64bit Operating system so this sould be your starting point

Hi everyone, I am hoping to get some help.

So I am looking to upgrade my Graphics card as it is awful, It is a Hd 5450, So I am looking to upgrade it to either the Ati Radeon 6850 or 6870 are these good cards are they worth the price?

So My motherboard is a ASrock M3A UCC hope that helps.

I need to upgrade my psu as I need one that has 2 external power cables to plug into the graphics cards, so what is the most cost effective one?

also I have 4gb ram looking to upgrade it, is it worth it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Both are good cards this will power both. Never skimp on the PSU

Video cards should be selected by what monitor your using if your running a 900p or less monitor these would be cheaper.

For the memory if you have a 64 bit operating system you could bump it up to 8GB

(anything over 4 most people will say is not needed for gaming) if not look to see if you have the fastest you can get for your MB I think it will support 1600MHz but make sure before you buy.

DISCLAIMER Your going to be adding more heat in your system so a fan upgrade will probaly be needed (Higher CFM) If your case does not have a front and rear fan i would upgrade the Case also. TAKE the side off your case and measure to make sure everything fits you never stated what PC you have.

ok so i dont know a ton about computer hardware

i know im running an intel core i3 550 and an ATI radeon 5450 all in a cheap prebuilt machine from over a year ago

when i inquired about upgrading in my own thread here i was told to upgrade to a intel core i5 650 and a Geforce Gtx550

now i understand the GPU upgrade, however i did some looking into comparing the i3 550 and the i5 650 and they look nearly identical

is it worth the $200 to upgrade the PCU or should i put that into a better GPU and maybe come ram, and a new razer keyboard?

Now i am ONLY looking to play SWTOR on MAX settings in every possible way. i doubt i will be playing other games on here, and if i do want to in the future ill upgrade again or buy a whole new rig

any suggesting on getting the most out of this game?

The GPU is the problem or lack of you will also need a new PSU and up it to 4 GB ram

Okay guys, I have made a few threads about my current project of building a new PC and have gotten alot of great feedback from all of you. Basically I have narrowed it down to what I am pretty sure that I want. All I am looking for is some opinions and which equipment to choose from.

I am currently between one of these three video cards:

1- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...839&CatId=3669

2- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...682&CatId=3669

3- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...248&CatId=7005

The reason I don't go for the EVGA card right away is because I am trying to save some money :/ But is it worth the extra cash?

Processor: AMD FX-4100

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131767

PSU: 500W Corsair

RAM: 8 GIG Corsair Vengeance

Harddrive: 500gig Western Digital Black

I was going to check out your links and provide some feedback but they don't work for me. Maybe it's just me though.

You're going to want to get a better Power Supply Unit (PSU), which may also mean (based on what I see) you'll want to go ahead and get a new mobo to better support your new GPU and PSU, so you may as well get new memory, and you're sort of looking at a new build.

Yes, you can just get a new GPU, but you will need a new PSU to go with the newer ones, 500W minimum is suggested.

Thanks for the help, Its a gaming case that I have I'm not sure what the dimensions are and I'm not to sure how to put new or more fans in. How would I measure the case to see if all fits in? e.g do I just measure the whole thing height and with

EDIT: Dimensions (mm) 405mm x 185mm x 412mm(D x W x H) these are the measurements I found for my tower

Hi,

I have a Core2Duo E4600 2.4Ghz CPU and I wanna get 2nd hand mobo+ram and buy a new GTX560ti.

The question is:

How well do u think this kindda rig can perform in the game? I wanna play it on 1080p and get at least 40FPS.

Thanks for helping!

The thing you need to look for is if it has any open fan slots. These are usually circular holes clustered on the case there will always be one on the back and front. There might be one on the side. Mine is a gaming case too mine supports 2 200mm fans on the top and front and 1 120mm fan on the back and 1 160mm on theside. Do you know what type of case you have?

thanks for your answer. I forgot to mention that I'm gonna overclock it to 3.0ghz.

How well do u think it would perform, say in smaller resolutions? most important thing is that I would get 40+ FPS. do u think it's gonna be possible?

i'd agree with the first advice. that you're better off with more RAM.

also. if you're on an older computer. and or trying to peice meal a cheaper rig. don't overlook the benefit of SLI two 460s vs one 5xx card.

as far as FPS. on 1080. it depends. i'm horrible at predicting benchmarks at different aspect ratios. but your CPU is also prob a bottle neck. and if you're gonna drop 200-300 on a GPU card. is it really that more of a stretch to sock away dbl that and just build a new rig from scratch on a barebones budget. tom's hardware always does a decent $500 rig. that you could copy verbatim... and have benchmark info straight from the horses mouth.

Get a video card the 5.75 leads me to believe you have on board graphics and if that is true a vid card will improve performance

The problem with this is he'll also need a new PSU (Power Supply Unit). My work computer has almost his exact specs so I know the chances are very good it's a pre-made computer he probably got from Staples (where my work got mine) or Best Buy or some place like that.

The current PSU is about 250w, so he'll need to pay close attention to what power consumption needs his new card will need going forward and buy a PSU accordingly.

Also note that the case for my computer is a mid-tower case with very little room for upgrades, although I can confirm you can fit a GTX 260 into one if you're willing to bend the frame a little.

I don't mind spending a good bit of money but would like to keep it as minimal as possible. I would say under $250 would be ideal more then that and i would probably just invest in a new computer. Thank you for the help =)
