Broken Companions

Recommended Posts

This is an updated and ongoing list of companion-specific bugs that players have suffered post-4.0 (and in some cases, before KotFE). Many of these bugs are still awaiting official recognition and assurances of fixes. The goal of this thread is to draw attention to these potentially game-breaking issues.

My first post-4.0 companion bug experience happened as I was nearing the completion of my Bounty Hunter chain and realized that some conversations weren't occurring where they should be. Further investigation revealed that the Torian Cadera quests "Ways of the Warrior" and "Target Practice" are not triggering, and are in absence affecting other Bounty Hunter interactions (specifically with Torian in regards to whether or not you choose to be a Mandalorian). Information on this bug is scattered across at least two different forum posts.

Here is a list of companion combat-specific bugs compiled by KevMeup:

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=889835

-Some companions still use the wrong voice when in healing or tanking stance, specifically:

- Ensign Raina Temple uses Kaliyo Djannis' voice

- Lord Scourge uses Sgt. Rusk's voice

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=843849&page=2

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=876857

- Lt. Felix Iresso uses Zenith's voice

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=856760

This particular bug is almost as old as 4.0, as evidenced by this thread: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=846388&page=2

(Thanks to leviathanmirror for doing the legwork.)

-Bowdaar is also broken after turning in Freedom Fight, part of the Eternal Championship of KotFE in patch 4.4 and 4.5. He is stuck as an "Alliance Recruit" and cannot be summoned even though his rank is 10+ and his influence log states he joined the alliance as a follower:

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=882539

- Blizz and Treek aren't aligned properly with the Agent's social emote, and sink into the ground.

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=885688

- All returning main story companions in KotFE (SCORPIO, Kaliyo, Jorgan, Gault, Vette, and Torian) are missing speaking animations when poked. Additionally, Jorgan and Kaliyo don't say anything and sometimes trigger a "not eligible for this conversation" notification when clicked.

-At least one ship droid is supposedly missing vocals when sent on crafting missions.

-Nico Okarr has decided to ignore player interactions (poking) except in cantinas.

-Cosmetically, Vector Hyllus and Lord Scourge are still wearing unitards under their clothes while using their default customizations (this bug is almost as old as the game itself!). Also, Treek and HK-51's customizations don't show up in cutscenes.

-Buffs seem to vanish from companions when dismounting, traveling, or phasing.

- Some Class quests are no longer giving companion influence. Most recently, I experienced this on my newest Imperial Agent, during the final stages of Chapter 1 when confronting you-know-who. Certain interactions that I know used to give affection now give nothing. This bug happened with both Kaliyo Djannis and Vector Hyllus. When I created a ticket, the CS response explained that the issue was already known and would be addressed. That was several months ago.

-Some melee companions (specifically Ashara Zavros) seem to be lacking the proper combat animations, such as leaping. (((FIXED!)))

-Treek appears to be under-performing (in all three specs) compared to other companions at similar influence levels.

- Treek always defaults to Imperial buffs, regardless of the player's faction. This also might be preventing players from using certain customizations and unlocking her on certain factions:

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=858681

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=888319

-The Probe Droid companion (available from the Cartel Market) has broken animations and is missing some sounds.

- Some "infected" companion customizations don't include full-body textures and revealing outfits show that they are actually droids from the neck down.

- Some companion quests aren't level-syncing properly and are only granting 6 exp.

-The RotHC prelude intro doesn't recognize Chapter 3 completion and offers only the basic intro (on BHs, at least).

While the people in charge of quality control may not consider these bugs a priority, the preponderance of these threads indicates that companion interactions are still very important to players. Leaving such glaring mistakes alone for too long will eventually cause players to unsubscribe. We hope you address them as soon as possible.

The third was fixed I can confirm, my romance is now recognize and far as I know everybody was fixed. fix a few months ago

I'm not sure if it was comprehensively fixed, though, because that post was made last week and the author is claiming that his romances with Kaliyo Djannis and Elara Dorne aren't flagging correctly.

The fix that you are thinking of could have solved the problem months ago, but maybe the bug cropped up again in a different way--kind of like the Chapter 3 completion issues that seem to keep happening.

First BH:

- completed main storyline before 4.0

- romanced Torian

- got all of Torian's conversations

- romance not acknowledged in KotFE

- rerolled

Second BH:

- created post 4.0

- no Resol'nare conversation

- sacked after completion of RotHC

Third BH:

- created post 4.0

- currently on Nar Shaddaa and has not yet met Torian

- on hold until Torian is debugged, and that means both getting the romance acknowledged and getting all of his conversations

I'm sick of this and ready to quit after I get my August goodie.

FIX TORIAN ALREADY!!!

ALSO:

- courting gifts still borked

- Treek and HK no longer give influence or xp for their conversations

- Treek and HK's customizations no longer show up in their conversation cutscenes

- buffs on companions do not refresh when dismounting or traveling

(I've updated my sig to direct to this thread. :) )

Why stop after RotHC? Was something else broken? Was the marriage not flagging? Or were you not flagged as a Mandalorian? I don't actually think the missing conversations are linked to being a Mando vs. not being a Mando anymore, since non-Mandos are also missing the "Ways of the Warrior" and "Target Practice" quests. Still, the more info the better.

I didn't know about some of these. If I see forum posts I will add them to the links in the first post.

Awesome, let's get some recognition!

The devs know that courting gifts are bugged. The fix was initially scheduled for 4.1 but didn't happen and we haven't heard anything since.

I also remember reading something about it in patch notes, but it appears not to have been fixed after all. The question now is whether the courting gifts aren't working because of improperly flagged romances or for another reason.

I stopped because I apparently sneezed on the character and she broke. I didn't want to continue with a broken character. She was a Mandalorian and did not get the most important conversation for Mandalorians.

Add on Temple still using Kaliyo's voice while healing. I think Scourge still uses the wrong one too.

Speaking of Scourge, he and Vector still wear bras and unitards under all armor that shows skin. (Default customizations only)

Nico doesn't say anything when you poke him as a companion, but he will if you poke him as an npc in the bar.

One of the ship droids no longer says anything when you send him on crafting mission. (Don't remember which one.)

Sounds like they overdid the companion role streamlining a bit too much.

For awhile there, Vector was also using Kaliyo's voice. It's the only one that's been fixed, probably because it was the oddest.

I don't think Scourge or Iresso had their own threads on the topic (not popular enough, I don't think most people ever use Iresso enough to realize his voice is wrong) but here are some threads on the voice issue:

And not a single dev response for any of those threads (at least that I saw). Amazing, seeing as some of the posts are almost 8 months old. I updated the first thread to include all these links. As cool as KOTFE has been, some TLC for older content would undoubtedly give players the reassurance they need to keep subbing--after all, the 1-50 content (and companions in particular, for some) are the reason we started and part the reason we stay.

Another bug is some melee companions not getting into melee range, but showing up as if they did.

For example, Ashara doesn't leap anymore, and her figure is still next to me, but ranged enemies are taking damage and gathering at her as if she was over where they are. This does not happen with Khem. He leaps and works as he should.

I also experienced this bug with Torian, but no shocker there. (Pun intended, even though he does seem to use purple force powers like Khem does.)

Thanks for compiling all of these. Of all the new bugs that have been introduced with 4.0, the companion and story bugs bother me the most. After all the hype for this new expansion, and the implications that it was going to be companion focused, to see all these companion bugs go unaddressed for so long is upsetting. So many of the bugs we've seen these past few months are what I would consider to be serious, story-breaking bugs. BW, if you want us to be invested in our characters, to care about them and look forward to future content in your game, you have to stay on top of companion and story bugs!

Seven months and no fix for:

courting gifts

incorrect voice-overs

affection not being awarded properly

story flags not being recognized

This is kind of a disgrace, BW. I can only assume that you bit off more than you could chew with KOTFE. If so, hire more people...make changes...do whatever it takes. Because players get frustrated, and they start thinking BW isn't as invested in the game as they are. And that's bad.

At the bare minimum, please acknowledge the bugs that players find! Things never used to be this bad before 4.0. If we know you are at least listening, and working on it, that can go a long way to increasing players' patience.

I'm starting to wonder if we should start contacting the real owners of this whole shebang: the EA investors and LucasArts. Impress upon them how important it is for the companion bugs to be fixed.

After all, BioWare seems to be cutting off its nose to spite its face with these bugs. Story is their new focus, and they are dropping the ball big time.

Odd. Is she using a ranged taunt? Or generating healing aggro? Either way, I will add this to this list of bugs. Let me know if you find/start a thread about it elsewhere in the forums.

Perhaps the voiceover bugs will be fixed when the bugged companion reappears in KotFE? They will have to record new mission dialogue, even if it's just an Alliance Alert mission.

Perhaps! But with working companions, it seems to me that they used already-existing sound-bytes, taken either from quest dialogue or variants of "poked" flavor dialogue, to round out the role-themed dialogue. Additionally, all companions have a plethora of conversational dialogue that was already mapped for their specific role and that dialogue could be used for all three specs in a pinch. There's really no excuse for these mix-ups.

I lol'd. Also, i think the purple force powers are default for (Imperial) tanking specs now (seems to default to Sith Assassin abilities). Correct me if I'm wrong, I've only used Khem and Vector as tanks, and they both had purple force powers.

Seconded. I'm really reluctant to take any characters through KOTFE, just because I don't want to run into a story or companion bug that forces me to abandon or restart my character. Congratulations to BW, they gave us a wonderful world and story, full of lore and content--but now it's their responsibility to make sure everything about that world and story remains consistent.

I agree with the biting-off-more-than-they-can-chew analysis. They're only giving themselves a month between chapter releases in KOTFE and that doesn't leave a lot of time for quality assurance and testing. I don't know how many more chapters there will be in Season One of KOTFE, but it might not be until it ends that we get a fix (or even a response) to these bugs.

At the bare minimum, please acknowledge the bugs that players find! Things never used to be this bad before 4.0. If we know you are at least listening, and working on it, that can go a long way to increasing players' patience.

I've gotten several nice, hopeful responses from CS in regards to tickets, but I'm still waiting on an actual BW representative to reach out and offer a response either in-game or on these forums. I'll encourage people to go pester them on Twitter--if we can present these problems in a more public way, we might get a hastier response.

I just read through that thread with the title about Torian's marriage proposal, and I think you're onto something with the flags being messed up after Belsavis.

So that means that the flags regarding the Mandalorian choice are not being read properly. This means that somewhere down the line this could jump back and bite us. :( I really hope they fix this tomorrow. I'm not sure what I'll do if they don't. Do I continue with a bugged character and hope for the best? Or do I just put this game on hold until they get their act together?

Both companions and the story recognized my Mandalorian as Mandalorian even with the Resol'nare conversation missing. Torian gets other references to it, all of which occurred normally including getting the Mandalorian versions of the 'trouble' and final romance conversations. Even the RotHC mention happened normally, even though the opening cinematic was busted for her in a different way (it behaved as if Mako was her only companion). All SoR and KotFE references to her being Mandalorian worked too. In terms of the romance, she got all the vanilla letters, the mention in the SoR intro, the option to tell Valkorion about it (twice) in chapter two, and the KotFE letter just fine.

If there's a problem with flags, it's specifically the two missing conversations. It's more likely that those conversations were removed, either because they were lost in the shuffle when BioWare changed the order and triggers around or they were deliberately removed for some reason. I'm hoping that they just got lost when things got rearranged and BioWare can put them back in without much fuss but I'm not holding my breath either.
