Mortar Volley & AC

While I wouldn't advise picking an AC based solely on liking one ability that's only available once a minute and is available to both ACs anyway, if I had to pick for you, I'd say Commando. Vanguards will be too close / getting hit too often to use mortar volley comfortably.

MV is a ***** to place close to yourself due to a 5m minimum range which incidentally makes it lousy if mobs are 360 degrees around you. Generally you don't use it while melee fighting as a vanguard.

Commandos are typically standing off from a fight so placing a MV reticule is no issue at any point.

The best MV launcher is Commando Gunnery due to 35% armour penetration (not 35% more damage by the way).

That by itself is a lousy reason to take the class and you should consider your quality of life between the times when you can use MV.

Yes I realize i should not base it on one ability but I think it's typical of my Playstyle so I probably should go Commando.

Commando Assault Specialist gives added bonus to MV on burning targets which is every target. Very fun in WZ's.

It might not be Mortar Volley it's like a rocket launcher built into my gun I'm only level 5.

Will I regret Commando if I take it with the intent to play PvP instead of taking Vanguard?

Do you mean Explosive Round? If so, you'll never use it in PvP except to interrupt someone capping a node. It takes way too much ammo to use and it doesn't knock down players like it does to trash mobs.

I'm not saying I'm as good a player as him but I saw Taugrim do it in his Iron Fist video it was in huttball is it good for that and should I be a Vanguard or Commando if my style is to use powers like that?

Thanks

I'm still not sure which ability you're even talking about - Explosive Round or Mortar Volley or something else? Maybe Incendiary Round?

If it's a level 5 ability it is more than likely Explosive Round. As others have said, in pvp, you will use it sparingly and this goes for both commandos and VGs since they both have it.

If you want to stay at range, then go commando, but be warned you will get killed, a lot, and probably get frustrated in PvP. VGs are melee and while they do have some ranged attacks, they don't have as many as the commando.

No it doesn't.

Damage boosts on burning targets are for:

High impact bolt

Hammer Shot

Charged Bolts

Full Auto

Hail of Bolts <- is this the AOE you're thinking of?

It is a beige icon and I think it is the one in the progression video before the Trooper took an AC.

I never use Explosive Round and I have a Vanguard tank and Commando Healer. If you are looking at PvP, I would suggest Vanguard (lvling a second Vanguard right now just through PvP). It costs to much ammo, and while the damage is nice, it's not part of any rotation that I have seen or used past Taris. While it is true that Vanguards are considered a melee class, I don't really think they are true melee. Five to ten meters maybe where Jedi and Sith work, but we can still damage at range to great effect while we close the distance. The Vanguard's taunts, guard, pull, heavy armor and decent splash damage with sticky grenade and pulse cannon more than make up for a lack of a push back.

If you are looking at Commando I would suggest healer tree, as the cast times for a lot of the attacks in the other trees will get you killed a lot in PvP. Healing in PvP is tough but is more welcome in PvP than being chow for every other class save Merc's in PvP. When I was lvl'ing my healer Commando doing a lot of PvP I would consistently put up over 100k damage and heals in many WZ's.

If you run Assault, you're perfectly fine only casting Full Auto once every 15 seconds and just using instant casts besides that (and obviously you can skip or cutoff Full Auto if you need to).

Is that Commando or Vanguard because that's the shared tree?

Thanks

Here is what you do with Explosive Round:

Mouse over it

Left click and hold

Drag outside of your quickbar

Release

And never put it back there again. It is a useless ability, HS will end up doing more/same damage and is free, ER costs 3 ammo and is only ever useful on Ord Mantell to kill trash.

Maybe, maybe when there are 2 people capping a node you can use it to stop them both, but that's incredibly situational and you are better off with Hail of Bolts as a Mando.
