I want to destroy this false belief here and now. I've been hearing this alot lately, and I think the only way to address this problem is by making a new thread about it.

 

So, on with the problem.

 

Many people believe that the galaxy bioware has portrayed in SWTOR is "too advanced", saying that the clothes, armor, weapons, and even titles (Such as Moff) and buildings

(The jedi temple portrayed in the cgi trailer) are too advanced for the time period the game takes place in.

 

But it isn't. The problem is this: For most people, the star wars legacy begins at KOTOR 1. Kotor 1 and 2 are the oldest (in starwars' timeline) media that we have seen so far. Sure, in-game they go into the infinite empire, but for the most part, when you think of 1000+ BBY, you think of Kotor.

 

 

So, if you believed that the technology shown in Kotor was the "oldest" of star wars, It would seem ludicrous that 300 years later the technology we see would match the par of the movies. But, as I will continue, you will see this is not the case.

 

 

In the tales of the jedi series, it showcases primitive and simple technology. It takes place before Kotor, and in images that take place before TOTJ, the tech is even less advanced. (Some jedi used lightsabers with cables attached to battery packs). Technology INCREASED from this time, having become more and more developed and effective. But then, after the cold war, the galaxy entered a dark age, in which technology was greatly reduced, and the advancements made were lost to the new sith wars. (Some warriors in this conflict even used spears and pikes). After the war, the republic slowly rebuilt itself until finally, it matched the splendor that we see in the movies and in this game. All in all, we see the galaxy at its finest in this game, having built upon primitive tech. After which, the galaxy degrades, and is then able to rebuild itself.

I believe they have come out and say they have purposely "retconned" the art style from Tales of the Jedi as poor design choice.

 

In all honesty the technology used in the Star Wars galaxy has not changed much in the last four thousand years, probably longer. We typically see refinements or adaptations to existing technology rather than brand new innovations.

 

This is not a all together unseen trope in space opera.

think of it this way, this era is highly advanced and at a certain point your will just hit a wall then theres not many more advancements left, just like in our past hundreds of years pass before things made a change, then theres the rakata, a mater race that litrally blew themselfs back to the stone age. not sure if this has anything to do with the post but its my thaughts

So...your saying a Hammerhead cruiser is on par with an Imperial Star Destroyer?

TOR takes place at the height of galactic civilization. Following this period, the galaxy will never come close to the same level of technology. The galaxy is in for 2000 years of decline following this point, and even in the 1000 years leading up to the formation of the empire, the republic is never able to truly recover it's lost glory.

Its exactly as the poster above stated.

Even as the The Clone Wars started, Th e Republic didn't even have a

standing army or navy and just had the peace keeping Jedi to lean on.

Other organizations such as the Trade Federation were a force to be

reckoned with but mainly because of their connections to the Tech Guild.

 

It can be said and seen that the advanced atmosphere of the Republic at

the time of the Clone Wars was more advanced than that during the original

trilogy. Again, the galaxy had began to decline under the Empire as the Empire

had all the heavy tech. You can't have a successful empire if all of your rivals

have equal or greater technology.

 

So what we're seeing in TOR is simply that. The Republic during it's golden age.

Soon to fall into millennia of decay. Those who say the Republic is destined to

win SWTOR haven't really been paying attention to the bigger picture. The

Republic is still standing by the Clone Wars, but the Sith isn't destroyed. And

the cost of the Republic's continued existence is a hefty one.

Actually, Clone Wars tech < GCW tech.

To name a few things.

thats just about all waar will do, destroy everything and set you back but eventually the republic will be back on its feet

Of course not.

 

We see this in a more limited form today with firearm technology. The basic technology has remained the same for over a century, but refinements in technology and materials have made weapons today more deadly than they were a century ago.

 

Hammerhead cruisers had turbolasers, hyperdrives and shields, but they were not as refined and advanced as the ones used during the GCW.

 

As a previous poster also stated, the galaxy had seen a millenia of peace, of course weapons technology would stagnate.

 

Even a hundred years past the films, we see the same technologies, but fitted on more powerful starships.

in the comics there is a comic called knights of the old republic falls about 100/300 years before the game in the comics they had ship made out of wood, ya no kidding wood! and had bio ship gown and breed, and most of the fans of the comics where socked udderley shocked of the look of the game KOTR , every thing so clean and teck and meddle... just saying Edited February 14, 2012 by westraz

It will probably blow your mind to know that Wooden Ship happens about 3,000 years after SW:TOR. Or about 1000 years before the films.

From all reports this game occurs during the years 3643-3641 BBY. Check all of your sources to see where the technology was/is and compare it to what is in game now.

 

I'm good with it as it is. Working on flashing what companies are current at this time (found one based on Talus, Vuh'Jinêau Mining Company. hoping to find more companies in Biotech, Agriculture, etc...

No, its not too advanced. This is a society that's had FTL travel for a couple thousand years now, there really isn't much further to go with the tech. Edited February 14, 2012 by Aximand
