In the right hands, assassin/shadow tanks are unbelievably good, definitely competitive with the other tanks, and even superior in several ways. My current progression raid group runs two shadow tanks, and while we're certainly conscious of the weaknesses of the class (*ahem* trenchcutters), we don't regret this particular compositional choice. For your friend to say Sin tanks are bad is just wrong. Each tank has its own strengths and weaknesses but can always tank anything effectively. If anyone says a class can't do something well, what that means is they can't play that class well. Don't fret your class can tank like any other class.
