Star Wars Galaxies

To chip in my 2cts on this one...

Began playing SWG back in 2004 and it was a thrill to have made a character and find myself in Mos Eisley at the starport entrance with an R2 coming to me as my guide.

Very cute.

I met up with very mature and friendly people while learning and it made me see the wonders of the sandbox. For those complaining about having to see entertainers and having to wait in line: the same was for doc buffs, or when you missed the shuttle. But those were the moments to socialize (after all, it's an mmo). Sometimes nothing happened, but in occasion while waiting for a shuttle a fight broke loose because some bounty hunter (player) came for another player. And then, because people were watching the fight, many missed the shuttle again :)

Seeing docs, entertainers for healing and buffing gave the very needed interaction.

The CU drastically destroyed that part, but it did set straight a few wrong things like the double stacking of skills which caused problems with 'uber' and FTM toons while SOE tried to fix those. The CU was a good thing but it caused a bunch of mayhem and personally I regret it not having seen it following through because in 6 months it was replaced with the dreaded NGE.

About the NGE I can be short: that basically killed the game for a lot of the people I'd like to hang out with in favour of a crowd I couldnt care less about. Especially rendering some classes completely moot was a not-done (which SOE really learned the hard way).

I returned when those were reintroduced (in some way): beastmaster specialisation.

However, the whole NGE was more like a grindfest for me. Levelling, getting components for BM, getting components for re-introduced attachments - anything to just take lots of time so subscriptions would have to be payed over and over to finally get what you want.

In the original I never payed attention: just played and enjoyed living in that world.

Personally I look back at the NGE with dislike - it turned over the game again (2nd time in 1 year), removed classes people have been playing for 2-3 years, and on top sort of changed the whole galaxy rules wise. Over time, things were re-added trying to give it the flair back it had, but it could never match the original or CU.

The closure of SWG didnt come as a shock or surprise. It was dying already and just a matter of time. The ability to fly your ships not just in space but over planets as well should have been there years ago, not the last month - it was requested since before the CU (2005).

The biggest plus on SWG was and still is (because I do not know of any other mmo that has implemented it) the decoration of housing. With NGE finally came the almost full free 3d rotation and placement of objects within any structure you had administration rights to. Some amazing pieces of work were created by people over the years and I have yet to find another game that give that level of customization.

Now I'm here in TOR. And I'm still not sure what to think of it. Sure, some parts are fun. But what when I'm finished doing the whole quest line. Then waht? Is PVP end-game (not my idea of fun, no offense). Will there be cities or house to own which can be decorated?

Will there be opportunity to 'switch' sides? Like as a dark jedi seeing the light again? Or is it once you're affiliation is chosen (either empire or republic) it sticks unless you delete character and start over?

So in the long run I dont see myself yet keeping swtor...

So I was looking for something else today and came across this, decided to put it all together for a little picture.

My original Collectors Edition that I pre-ordered in March of 2003 while I was still playing the beta. The art book I have but it's in a tub full of books in my shed.

Also next to it is just a regular copy of the game I bought for my alt account in summer of 04.

Felt cool to see this stuff again!

Was a great game.Unlocking jedi was the best gaming moment ever......then they epic failed with the NGE.Mass exodus after that, server closures/transfers and a slow death followed.

After the closure announcement SOE brought out loads of cool stuff, just a pity 90% of people had quit the game for good.I could'nt be bothered logging in for the end events, was no point.7 years of gaming gone like leaves in the wind.

Great memories.Time to make new ones now.

Started a month after launch, met a creature handler who gave me a Wrix I named Kha and he followed me until the last day I played (with a paus during the first part of the NGE). Different incarnations of course. Wrix - Gurreck - Bio-Engineered 60pt gurreck.

Wierdly enough, knowing it's only code, I'll miss him.

But the best part of SWG and what kept it going was the social aspects of the game and space. Without those the game would've cancelled 6 months after the NGE I bet.

Personally, I don't feel the NGE was the worst thing that happened to SWG even though it removed Kha and all my other pets, the absolute worst part was the CU. Here is why:

It added levels and (IMO) that killed the game. Nothing could recover SWG after that. I was so very tired of the game and what they'd done to it before the Mustafar expansion that when they announced the NGE I felt a bit of hope. Of course, it was crushed. Still, the CU had already killed it for me.

But I have to say though, the combat and beast mastery at the end of SWG's life was better than the Pre-CU and CU. Combat in Pre-CU was mashing two buttons as a rifleman, hoping it would not kill you (the drain from skill use could kill you).

So, if they've kept the non-level skill-trees from Pre-CU, updated to the Creature Handlers to what Beast Mastery became and added a similar combat system to NGE, it would've been a perfect Star Wars game where Tusken Raiders in Fort Tusken actually were dangerous.

...Wierdly enough, knowing it's only code, I'll miss him...

You know I felt the same way. I hadn't been a regular for some time but once I learned it was closing I was very sad. Even if it is all code you get used to it. I used to have a droid or pet following me everywhere (I loved the R2s best). Even being NPCs they still spend a lot of time with you so I think it's reasonable for us to miss them.

In fact, I was searching for a SWG pic or vid to link in my sig as a tribute and the one I liked most was a video that was nothing more than a simple collage screenshots of a little boy and his various pets. I thought it was very touching and decided it was my favorite tribute (Click the SWG link in my sig to watch it :)).

Once I saw that I went to the BM forum out of curiosity and was not surprised to see many beast masters paying tribute to their fallen companions. I think that kind of thing illustrates the kind of impact SWG had. Whether you played at launch, CU or NGE (I played in all of them) you could always find stuff that no other game had so no matter what you had a unique experience (even if it drove you bonkers :))

Anyway, I loved Star Wars: Galaxies and here's hoping that TOR can create a whole new world of adventures and memories.

RIP SWG My old favorite game.

sorry rickyard i also left out with the nge came the new classes. at first there were a lot of classes that had subclasses, crafters would break down into armorsmiths, weapons, vehicles, furniture, architect, etc . same with medics, scouts, brawlers, rifles, pistols, all these classes had at least 3-5 sub classes. you could mix any class you wanted choosing all the skills you wanted making everyone able to be a custom character. nge made it so you got on, and you were a bounty hunter or spy or medic, etc. not to mention one awesome function was that bounty hunters could also hunt real players for a paid bounty.

Thanks a lot, ruby, I am sure I have been lucky enough to quit star wars galaxies when still was a great game, perhaps a curse, as I haven't seen the bad part and in my mind still is perfect. I really loved sandbox.

Didn't know where else to rant.

Don't have the changes people want in this game pertain to something SWG ALREADY had? I miss SWG. People say this game is better, the only way I can see it is is for casual players who literally do NOT have more than two hours at a time on, as you could get a fair amount done in SWG in two hours, and the voice overs. It had quests. No, they weren't out at launch, but they were there, and more diverse than the ones in this game. And hell, Legacy was one big *** long quest from 5-55/60ish. Sure, it got boring (NABOO), but it was an interesting story. Kashyyk was a themepark. I never did like it as much as I did the other planets, but I liked it.

It had player housing. It was nice to go into random peoples houses and leave them a mail telling them you liked their decor, then getting a mail back thanking you. To have a house on a mountain side, with windows, just sitting and chatting with your friends in the house, and watching the sun set.

That may be part of what I'm missing too. The feeling of community SWG had. Sure, you'd ride your speeder around Tantooine, out in the desert, and rarely come across someone, but if you wanted companionship, it was as easy as going to Mos Eisley. Or Coronet. You could hit up almost anyone to help you. In SWTOR, I've run people through a few FPs, but it doesn't feel nearly the same as helping someone in a SWG instance. I'm sorry, but so far, NK Necrosis as a Ent buffed Dark Jedi was harder than these Flashpoints. I'm not max yet, but is there anything that can compare to the DWB? Where even experienced groups wiped, after the AI re-upgrade?

I also miss the openness.. Even the vast deserts of Tantooine rarely felt...empty. There was always something. And the things that made it more real, like on Naboo. Little things, like butterflies flitting among the grass, or leaves floating down from trees. Or even a Sandstorm on Tantooine. Things that made it more than just a game. Things that made it like a second home.

I have alot more to say, but I guess it's comparing apples to oranges. A sandbox to a theme park. Even WoW was less themeparkish, at least to me. And no, not current day OMGSOPOLISHED WoW either. This game feels like someone tried to splice KOTOR and an MMO, which I guess is what resulted. It has all the grindiness of an MMO, with some OK story-telling. I'm trying to like it, but....I don't really like the carrot-on-a-stick way of playing. I keep finding myself just wanting to get to the next level. Why? To get to the level after. Why? To get to fifty. Why? To get the best gear. Then what? Wait for the next expansion or level an alt. Oh, but you can enjoy the AMAZING STORY TELLING. (spoilers) Yeah, I figured out by the time I was 25 on my SW that Baras would betray me and I would have to kill him.

I don't know. I just miss my old house and my Chuba.

I was thinking about SWG last night when somthing clicked.

It was the first SW mmo of its kind. Its launch was rocky at best.

We suffered bugs and crashes but played any way, some ppl hated it. To the others it was the mmo of mmo's and still is.

The community was like no other.

SWG was the Woodstock of SW's mmo's

As I have already canceled my subscription to this game mostly because of PvP... I cant help but to think of how good SWG was and how great it could of been, yeah I know SWG was the biggest "could of been" MMO ever.. lol

As a PvP player Im just disgusted with this game and cant help but to remember how great PvP was in SWG when it was first around, yeah after a while alpha jedis being unlocked left and right ruined it but before that there was the war effort, everyone crafting and gathering for better player made gear, buffs , stims, foods, drinks.. then you would have a player city usally filled and ran by an imp or reb guild who whould place a base just daring the other faction to do something about it lol. And that game was very social, never do I talk to other players in MMO's like I did in good ole SWG. I will miss that game and hate SOE for somehow turning what should of been gold into bantha poo....

As far as this game, its just a big theme park per class and once its done,, the game is kinda done... :-/

Just saw some videos on youtube of atmospheric flight in SWG. I can't believe they added it in! All those years we had hoped for it. If I knew they had added that in I definitely would have resubbed. Imagine the possibilities that could've been if there was atmospheric flight from launch?

SWG was my first MMO. I came in Post-NGE and even though I'm sure it was inferior to pre-CU it was still ridiculously fun, the sheer amount of exploration and customization (houses, ships, cities etc) was amazing.

Admittedly there were more than a few problems, such as the world being too big for the dev's own good, by which I mean they didn't fill enough of it up, the combat was more or less just a kite-fest, and the drop in players irreparably damaged the community.

The last two can be blamed on the NGE though.

Got to admit, all this talk of SWG has got me a little misty eyed.

The best memories of any game for me were back in 2004 getting multiple full groups buffed up and going base busting. Back when guilds defended these, and not just 20 people.....100+ each side. So much lag, but for some reason I still had a blast.
