An analysis of power: Meetra Surik

This article will be about the power displayed by the Jedi Exile that rebuilt the Jedi Order via her Disciples.

Meetra from a young age was noted as having the ability to form bonds with others, many of her fellow students would follow her every move, eventually this expanded after she joined the Mandalorian Wars, when an entire half of the Republic fleet under her command followed her through the gruesome battles of Serroco, Dxun and Malachor V, her ability in Battle Meditation though nowhere near as powerful as that of Bastila Shan, allowed for multiple Republic victories instead of what would have been wars of attrition.

Before she accepted her call from Alek Squinqargesimus though, Vima Sunrider found a latent and natural ability in her, a power among the strongest that the Light Side of the Force can muster, the Sever Force technique, a devastating ability that she would only use in the most dire of occasions.

Once engaged fully in the brutality of war she quickly grew to the rank of Jedi Knight as well as Revan's most trusted General, so much so that he gave her over half of his own fleet to lead into war.

Surik displayed immense capability in the lightsaber forms of Shii-Cho, Makashi and Soresu, so much so that Master Kavar asked her to take the path of the Jedi Guardian and hone her skills with him, her abilities with the Lightsaber allowed her to defeat numerous adversaries in close combat such as Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus, as well as Darh Traya.

Her abilities with the lightsaber were complimented by her expert innate sense of Battle Precognition, so natural that when training with the Handmaiden Brianna, she was expertly performing her capabilities to the level of the Echani warriors, without even realising it.

Surik however was not lacking when without her Cyan Lightsaber however as she was an expert hand-to-hand combatant, defeating single-handedly five Echani Handmaidens and the entire of the Mandalorian Battle Circle, greatly impressing Clan Ordo.

Her abilities over-all though were great enhanced by her great capabilities with Meditation, eventually learning extremely advanced meditation techniques, including the Moving Meditation technique, which allowed her to engage in combat whilst still being deep in trance, this ability would eventually peak in her single-handed attack on the Trayus Academy, where she slaughtered hosts of Sith Marauders, Lords and Assassins an extremely impressive feat given the sheer skill of her adversaries whom purged the Jedi Order.

She was also one of the very few among the Jedi that employed Dun Moch a technique generally used by the Sith to goad their opponent, this was combined with her ability to charm and influence others, a natural gift with words and influencing the ideals of others, this was an excellent means of encouraging entire armies that were almost always out-numbered and out-gunned, enabling Republic Infantry and local law enforcement to defeat vastly more skilled and better equipped forces.

Her more varied abilities did not end there though as she was skilled in the art of Beast Trick and Breath Control, techniques which normally take years for even the greatest of masters to learn.

Where direct applications of common Force abilities came in, she was an absolute master, she could use Force Channel to direct Force energy straight into her and unleash it's power like a conduit allowing for powerful uses of telekinetic abilities included expert applications of Force Whirlwind and Force Wave, whilst also being capable of using telekinesis to summon the highest form of Force Barrier known as Force Shield supplemented by a strong ability in Force Resistance, something she used to great effect whilst staving off much of the intense gravity crushing down on her whilst traversing the surface of Malachor V.

She was also expert at telepathy, able to delve into the innermost thoughts of even Jedi Masters, something she learnt so quickly it astounded Kreia and on the defensive side, her mental barriers were strong, supplemented by an extremely strong will, a complete devotion to the Light Side, the Galactic Republic and the Ways of the Jedi, regularly meditating on the will of the Force for guidance, something that allowed her to center herself completely.

But of all her abilities, her naturally gifted and expert command of Sever Force was most deadly, she was able to instinctually cut herself off from the Force to survive the mental scars of the Mass Shadow Generator.

She would however display her full power in her single-handed attack on the Trayus Academy, despite being mentally and physically ill she managed to cast down an entire host of Sith and then took down their leaders Darth Sion the Lord of Pain and Darth Traya the Lord of Betrayals, an immense feat which she achieved by completely opening herself up to the Light Side of the Force, allowing it to guide her in battle, she had achieved an immense goal by taking down almost the entire Sith Triumvirate with no aid despite the immense power of Malachor V surging through her Sith adversaries, at the end of this great battle she summoned yet again her ability with Sever Force, severing the bond between Master and Apprentice and allowing the Sith Lord to die without taking a mortal wound herself.

Her rarest power though was not of the natural Force, it was instead a Wound, an echo of Malachor V that had formed itself into her, as her attempt to cut herself off from the Force created yet another wound, this wound within her lay dormant for ten years until she connected a bond with Kreia, her wound awakened as the immense amount of death that surrounded her during a Hk-50's attempt to secure, fed the Wound, she absorbed the death of those around her, re-awakening her to the Force, over time she made bonds with other Force Sensitives, quickly she regained her command of the Force, the deaths of those around her fuelling her powers in the Force once again, she quickly learnt the techniques and lightsaber forms of those around her by merely observing them in practice.

As she was trained and enhanced by her companions, her power flowed back into them, turning them into moderately powerful individuals in their own right, as the excess force energy empowered her disciples, she showed a strong connection to the Force.

Though this ability through bonds did not end with her companions, in the caves of Dantooine she found a crystal that bonded to her, a pure glowing white crystal that became part of her, it greatly enhanced her as she enhanced it, eventually forming a conduit that allowed her to focus power in and out of the blade.

After time she would become extremely powerful, up until the point where she had gathered the remaining Jedi Masters to the ruins of Dantooine's Jedi Temple, it was here, where the revelations of her life unfolded and the connections she briefly made to the Jedi Masters granted her a vastly deeper knowledge of the Force a much more intimate and deeper understanding, allowing her to use extremely adept variations of many Force techniques.

She would evidently however completely heal the Wound within her, completely restoring her connection to the Force, though this would later come to serve her ill.

Surik did suffer from an achilles heel however, much of her power relies on her ability to center herself into the Force and without the unnatural protection that her Wound in the Force afforded her to partially stave off the draining effects of Dark Side energy, she could not achieve this, once she arrived on the Sith Empire's capitol world of Dromund Kaas she struggled to center herself even in the deepest trance she could delve into, the miasma of Dark Side energy on the planet made it very difficult for those attuned to the Light to call upon their power, this was Surik's downfall, as her ability to call upon her powerful command of the Force was greatly impacted by the planet.

Surik would eventually die due to this, as her normally masterful abilities in precognition failed her on this planet, allowing Lord Scourge her current Sith ally to betray her as she faced down the Sith Emperor, she was killed and the attempt to bring down the ancient Sith Master that had designed the events of her life, failed.

She would not however allow herself to become one with the Force, instead she would remain a guardian of Revan's mind for three centuries, feeding him her own Force power such that it was strong enough to battle the Sith Emperor's immense and utterly dark will, an extremely impressive feat, as the Emperor has easily dominated minds like Revan's before, this is especially true given that she was only in a state of a Force Ghost, far weaker than her bodily self.

After successfully planning and implementing Revan's release, she would join the netherworld of the Force and eventually join countless Force Ghosts in holding back the dark spirit of Darth Sidious, so that he would never again threaten the galaxy.

I'm wondering why we can't just call her The Exile.

Anyway, great work once again.

A question though, I was under the impression that Moving Meditation was the technique that allowed one to center oneself while working on droids. Perhaps Surik's is a more advanced version of the technique?

Any activity can be used to perform this ability, you just need to center yourself into what you are doing and not be distracted.

Ah, right. That makes sense.

Edit: Ah, I see. I misread the quote. :o

Haha we all do the same, oh and if this could be added to my section of the index I would appreciate it, oh and you can change it to just LadyKulvax now, no need for formalities plus it makes your thread look better.

This is nice comprehensive work.

Yes, Surik's greatest source of power was surprisingly her wound condition in which she was able to tank Sith powers such as Force Drain.

In addition, Surik seems to be among the most skilled duelists of her era or perhaps the Order; she proved this by cutting down Imperial Guards on Dromund Kaas, individuals who match Jedi in martial prowess and are empowered by the mighty Sith Emperor to such a degree that they are virtually immune to Force powers on this planet or near his presence and are also part of his personal powerbase.

---

Some points though:

  • Surik was possibly not at the top of her game on Dromund Kaas and her foresight abilities may have suffered a setback as a consequence of this, but her precognitive abilities were not impacted as apparent from her performance against several opponents whom she struck down and killed on this planet. It was failure of foresight which led to her not figuring out Scourge's betrayal.

  • Force Ghosts are canonically very powerful manifestations of the Force. Surik is among the few Jedi who learned the secret of immortality and this is why she was able to influence others in physical realm even as an apparition.

  • Surik stayed near Revan's prison so that the Jedi Master was able to feed on her power to counter-act similar action from the Sith Emperor on him. The ability to resist Sith Emperor's influence was Revan's own but with support from Surik's apparition, he lasted centuries in his struggle of wills with the Sith Emperor. Even though Sith Emperor was able to obtain the knowledge he needed for drawing plans to attack the Republic, it was Revan's influence which led to cessation of hostilities during Great Galactic War during which Jedi Order was on the brink of extinction but this period of peace afforded Jedi Order and the Republic the necessary time to rebuild their strength and strike back at the Empire once again.

Like I stated in the OP, canonical evidence points to the Exile not being able to summon her power, Jaina, Ben, Katarn and even Master Yoda were unable to call open their power significantly when journeying across the same planet and the former three suffered effects from complete inability to call upon the Force at all, severe mental illness & direct inability to call on her power and with Master Katarn it was as extreme as Dark Side corruption.

Precognition allows you to sense an immediate mortal danger, precognition does not equate to instinctual reaction, precognition only ever happens when something that causes mortal danger to the person is about to happen, which is exactly the case where Scourge's double-cross comes in, normally she would have sensed such a thing, as she has done so on a counted 27 occasions that we know of, the fact she was unable to sense this and instead was killed so simply suggests her immense skill in Battle Precognition was severely under-mined.

Also whilst Force Ghosts are powerful, it is canonically accepted that they like Sith spirits are not as powerful as their living selves were.

Also their is a direct statement that Surik didn't only supply him with the power to carry on but also emboldened his will, this only makes sense considering the fact that Revan's mind has been dominated easily once before by the Sith Emperor, in a direct mental battle, the most important factor is willpower and it is pretty clear that the Exile greatly bolstered Revan's own will to be able to influence his mind at all.

Meetra and Lord Scourge both got their butts kicked by Darth Nyriss while they were fighting her at the same time until Revan saved them. No wonder Scourge stabbed her, he knew they wouldn't last against the Emperor. Edited by Sadishist

I accept that Exile was likely not at the top of her game on Dromund Kaas though your revelation also affirms my position that Force-users (practitioners of the light) vary in their coping capability against effects of places strong in the dark side. Exile may have been negatively impacted on this world to a certain degree but she was able to sense danger in advance during combat situations, effectively duel dangerous opponents, unleash Force powers and even sense presence of Revan in this world before she would meet him.

Just consider the example of Mara Jade, she was able to perform much better on Dromund Kaas in comparison to Jaina, Ben and Katarn. Exile have experiences of her own that improved her coping capability in this respect.

So, yes, Exile was likely negatively impacted on Dromund Kaas but to assert that it was to great degree would be stretching this a bit. Continue to read below.

What baffles me in this case is that Exile was able to sense danger in advance on this world, like inside that cave where she killed some elite soldiers of Nyriss.

Now the confusing part is that Scourge was able to stab her from the back but their is an explanation:

It is possible that Scourge masked his presence or something before backstabbing Exile; I know that the novel does not explicitly suggest this (I blame this on sloppy writing) but if Exile was able to sense danger in advance in other places on Dromund Kaas, she should have been able to sense danger in advance even inside the Citadel, because none of these places are (actual) powerful nexuses like the Dark Temple and Dark Force Temple.

No?

Also whilst Force Ghosts are powerful, it is canonically accepted that they like Sith spirits are not as powerful as their living selves were.

Yes and No.

Both are powerful but not in the same way. Their are some spirits who are not able to influence others in physical realm (join the netherworld; become one with the Force or vice versa) but their are some spirits who are able to (Entities). Spirits which are able to influence others in physical realm, are canonically very powerful apparitions, and indicate that their living selves possessed some understanding of matters of immortality in life.

Their is a direct statement?

Yes, Revan got overwhelmed in mental battle when he met Sith Emperor first time but he had improved and developed new powers (special counter-measures) afterwards. He even taught Exile about how to strengthen her will just in case. Of-course, Revan is not on the level of Sith Emperor in the matters of telepathy and enforcing his will but the former is still extraordinarily capable in these matters nonetheless.

Ground reality is that even though Revan was a master of telepathic abilities, he would not have been able to wage mental war with Sith Emperor on his own accord due to great disparity in power between the two. However, Exile's apparition granted Revan the necessary "reservoir of power" which would make it possible for the latter Jedi Master to wage mental war with the Sith Emperor on equal footing (The act of waging mental war with Sith Emperor is Revan's own feat based on his own capability and mastery of these matters) but the STRENGTH to do so was provided by Exile's apparition. If Exile had not been present, Revan may have perished because he was virtually helpless inside that machine.

Exile's apparition offers unlimited "reservoir of energy" from which Revan is able to draw strength from:

As the Emperor fed off him, Meetra was allowing Revan to feed off her. Her sustenance strengthened his resolve whenever he grew weak, refreshing and restoring him so he could continue his never-ending mental war.

Because of her, Revan was able to do more than just fight to keep the Emperor at bay.

- and wage mental war with Sith Emperor with support from the aforementioned strength but his own mastery of these matters:

The answers were all there, but Revan would not surrender them easily. Though he was physically helpless, mentally he was strong enough to wage war against the Emperor, guarding and protecting his secrets for however long it might take.

And Revan knew something the Emperor did not. The connection between them went both ways. There were brief moments—times when the Emperor was intently focused on something else—when he could subvert their relationship by planting seeds in the Emperor’s thoughts.

He had to be careful, lest his enemy discover what he was doing. But he was able to push and nudge the Emperor’s own thoughts and beliefs, subtly manipulating them in ways that could have profound effects. Revan played on the Emperor’s caution and patience, constantly pushing them to the forefront of his enemy’s mind. He augmented his irrational fear of death. At every opportunity he reinforced the idea that invading the Republic was reckless and dangerous.

Clear?

---

In the nutshell, your essay is very well done, but you gave too much credit to Exile in few areas. Slight tone-down of these points would make the essay perfect.

Her abilitys were clearly under-mined, but i think the force simply don´t want her to see it. She had the chance to kill the emporer, but she decided to save revan instead (poor choice, i assume he would give his life if it is necessary), so the force turned away and prefered the hero of tython to accomplish this task. Similar to malaks betrayal, when revan didn´t feel a whole star destroyer preparing to fire at him.

The force can be treacherous.

The main point behind the Exile being unable to call upon the Force is simple, why did she not summon her supremely powerful command of the Light Side? because she can't, we have evidence that supports that devout Light Side force users were severely hampered on Dromund Kaas, Mara Jade is not a very good comparison because she has never been a seriously devout follower of the Light nor has she shared such a deep connection.

We must also count on a crucial fact, one of the Exile's main techniques was her ability to center herself deeply in the Force, allowing her to summon very powerful bursts of Force energy, she could do so whilst engaging in combat, it is called Moving Meditation and the KotOR CG confirms she used this to take down the Trayus Academy.

On Dromund Kaas she was evidently unable to use Moving Meditation and seemed to struggle when attempting to meditate clearly on the Force.

That is why she is unable to call upon her strong command of the Force to battle Nyriss and the Sith Emperor, Sever Force would have come in great use against such heavyweight Force Users in battle, she has shown an ability to use Sever Force in mid-combat once before, if she was able to do this against Nyriss she would have, it would have saved them a LOT of trouble.

I edited the OP slightly to greater reflect her contribution to Revan's battle of wills against the Emperor.
