New Star Wars MMO?

It's exciting news indeed. The MMO genre is crying out for a sandbox MMO with a big name next to it. I do hope SOE have learned from their mistakes and if the right balance is struck, players will flock to it.

Themepark MMOs have been on life support for a long time because players are left sitting around waiting for the next update - complete it within days then leave again.

Sandbox MMOs and even SWG allowed players to create their own story themeparks and players could create a party and join it. Way ahead of its time and all I will say is

Bestine vs Anchorhead battles!!!!!

i only remember EA getting a contract for 3 new star wars game nothing about a exclusive contract for star wars games

Where you been?

http://starwars.com/news/electronic-arts-selected-for-multi-year-agreement-for-the-future-of-star-wars-gaming.html

Today it was announced that Lucasfilm Ltd. and Disney Interactive are entering into a multi-year, multi-title exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) for the creation of new high quality Star Wars games aimed at the core gaming audience and spanning multiple genres for console, PC, mobile, and tablets.

Industry leaders and creators of best-in-class blockbuster games, the development and publishing teams at EA will collaborate with the creative teams at Lucasfilm to provide audiences with all-new gaming experiences set in the ever-expanding Star Wars galaxy. As part of the agreement, EA studio teams DICE (Battlefield series) and Visceral (Dead Space series) will join BioWare (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the development of new Star Wars games.

"Our number one objective was to find a developer who could consistently deliver our fans great Star Wars games for years to come," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "When we looked at the talent of the teams that EA was committing to our games and the quality of their vision for Star Wars, the choice was clear."

While EA studios will develop for the core Star Wars gaming audience, Disney Interactive will focus on delivering new Star Wars games for casual audiences on mobile, social, tablet, and online gaming platforms.

Can't wait for that game.

More specifically, cant wait for that game to get its own forum.

The collective mmo industry will breathe a sigh of relief when the "vets" find a new home and aren't the grumpy creepy uncle of the party.

Mmorpg.com might go bust tho.

And heck, it's not impossible that it'll "inspire" EA/BW to add a few more sandbox elements to mitigate the risk of losing players to it - although that is far from certain.

Hopefully very far from certain. If I wanted to play sandbox, I'd play sandbox. This game does not need to be wasting development effort geared towards something TOR is not.

Why not? Why would it be "wasting development effort" to increase content of any sort?

Interesting comments. Sadly, it's SOE...and that means Smed. Won't be a SW IP, so I expect it to be something like Planet Side 3.

I never played SWG myself... but calling Planet Side 3 something dedicated to SWG fans sounds like a shameless lie to me.

SWG = sandbox style MMO like UO.

Planet Side = MMO shooter.

Combine the 2 - a sci-fi sandbox that SOE controls.

Clearly what Smedley was referring to will not be a star wars property. It will likely be a new unique IP. So, I assume he is alluding to the style of design and content will be equivalent, but wrapped in a different lore. I'm not at all sure by the way that this approach will please the 25K or so players that were still playing SWG when it shuttered, nor that it will appeal to all the people that feel SoE (under Smedley's command) slaughtered an MMO they are on record as loving. It could however attract a new audience of sandbox lovers.

I'm not sure I would try a brand new sandbox MMO. But, have to wait to see what SoE actually does before deciding.

Yeah, I was irritated at Smedley's name even when it was something that I liked to hear. That said; a Planetside that was done to be a true MMORPG rather than a MMOFPS could be a decent way to have a "non-Star Wars" clone of SWG. The problem would be how they do it. If they try to go FPS twitch controls to hold true to the Planetside part and much like what they were trying to do when the NGE first launched, I think that would be repeating the mistake that pissed SWG fans off in the first place. They go MMO controls, either with set ups like pre-CU, CU, or late NGE; then they would probably just piss off Planetside fans.

I don't know if you're familiar, but SOE has had some past IPs that they "shelved" that might be reworked into some awesome sandbox goodness.

Ah... the Agency... how I waited for that game... :(

It'd be cool, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
