I finally got an e-mail saying that my characters were eligible for character transfer... yay! So I log in, read all the information about transferring, and initiate a transfer for my main character. This name has been available on every server I've rolled, so I wasn't too worried about losing it... low and behold, the name is taken on the destination server. So, I spend about an hour trying to find an alternate name that will work... Finally do, and it's horrible. Then, I find out that my surname (Legacy) is also taken... so I spend another hour trying to figure out a new one. NOTHING. IS. AVAILABLE. At least, nothing that I'd like. Even stupid stuff is taken that I don't truly want. I loved my old character's name and frankly don't want to lose it.

 

I submitted a ticket asking to be sent BACK to my Origin server Dune Bantha with my original character's information. I really hope that I'm not stuck on the destination server, Nightmare Lands. I know that losing my name was a risk... but I guess I was naive to it actually happening. I wish BW would just merge low pop servers and reset everyone's name so we all have a fair shot at getting what we want or had. I've been here since the beginning with this character and name so I've become quite attached to it.

 

Has anyone had this issue, submitted a ticket and received a response?

I would imagine that Origin servers will eventually be removed, so it would be pointless to move back..... Plus it's kind of pointless to have the name you want but be on a empty server .....

 

Not sure why people get so emotional over a name change.... Maybe if your a hardcore RP'er I could understand a bit, but for regular players... meh

And I'm sure the same is said about most RPers on these servers...

 

It's depressing to know that we can go to a community, but we have to build our characters, and our independent stories, around new names...

You should have done your research before transferring. There is no one to blame but yourself. A tough lesson.

Just make a variant of your old name, as for your last its not lost you have to put it in. now if you put it in and its taken then again do a variant of the name. Im sure BW will purge the old servers after a couple month and auto move anyone left on them.

I don't think you read my post fully. I clearly stated I read about the transfers and understood the risk. However, now I am regretting doing the transfer because my character's name was very important to me. Does that make sense to you, or do I need to speak to you like you're a three year old?

1. Find a destination server RIGHT NOW that has your name available that you want. Log onto ALL OF THEM IF YOU HAVE TO and try to make a character with the name you want. Once you get the name you want, then keep that character there as a name-holder. You don't level it (because you are eventually going to delete it).

 

2. Create another character on that same destination server that is also going to be a name-holder. Use the same name that you are currently using (the one you don't like).

 

3. Wait. Whenever they *eventually* open up paid transfers.... delete the name-holder character you made in step #1, right before you transfer your character.

 

4. Because your un-liked name already exists (thanks to the name-holder you created in step #2) you will be forced to rename you character (again). Rename your character to the name you wanted in the first place.

As your an RP'er just rp it, pretend that you have been taken into witness protection and you have a new identity.

That is some of the worst logic I have ever seen; you might get away with it here, but dont try that crap at Vegas, I guarentee that the casino wont pay the bill for you because everything didnt work out for you the way you wanted it to.

I think if they would give us a rename option, situations like this wouldnt happen. Sometimes people choke when picking a character name and pick a stinker, normally not a problem as you can quickly re roll and pick a new name. With a 50, especially one with a decent amount of gear, it's different. Your stuck with the crappy rushed name and, while rerolling is an option, it isn't practical. Edited June 19, 2012 by Elaril

I'm sorry, have you forgotten who pays BioWare so this game can keep going? If they can transfer the character, there should be no problem transferring back. It isn't hard logic.

Its not the end of the world. I lost my main and legacy to. I was a little annoyed for a few minutes then got on with Playing.

 

Its no big deal.

I love you! I wish I would have known this before choosing my new first name. Surname has been reclaimed and looks slightly more exciting now!

 

Submitted a ticket asking if BW can revert the charcter name so I can fix the first name. Hopefully they will let me.

I am pretty frustrated with the name changing as well. My main has been here since day 1, now I have to change his name along with 5 others....thats really stupid, especially for a story driven MMO that places so much emphasize on your character. Same goes for the legacy.

Am I one of the only person that understood when you accepted the optional transfer that there was a good chance you could lose your chacter or legacy names??

 

i am pretty sure bioware told us this could be a possiblity.... i dont understand all of the crying about it. I lost 2 .. my two main characters from imp and pub side, but i chose the transfer so.. what can i do... demanding bioware to send you back to your old server so you can keep your name seems incredibly petty..

I'm not so sure what's so important about the names, but I can see the frustration vented here. I wonder though what the ratio of "I'm not moving because I'll lose my name" is against "I can now do FPs, OPs, Heroics.. etc.." vs "I don't care about group stuff because I'm a role player" vs "I love group play because I'm a role player" is.

 

What percentage of people are really that bothered by a name change? Shirley all your friends will be informed of the name change. Surely you'll still be able to play your characters. Is a name change really that game breaking? Could you not conjure a story that explained the name change? As role-players I'd have thought that a little imagination goes a long way.

I think the point the were making is that you could have checked to see if the character name was available on the new server before transferring.

 

Try to friend the name on both a republic and an empire character. If the name is available, you won't be able to add it to either of their friend's list. Otherwise, the name will get added as a friend and you know that someone else already has that name.

 

It's not an infallible system but it greatly reduces the number surprise renames for those who will only move if they can keep their name.

What would be the point of moving back to origin server anyway? Just to have your name and then do what with it?

 

Wait for paid transfers? Well how do you know the next server you are moving to will not have a name taken any ways?

I must respectfully and politely disagree with the statement "most RPers". Most of the RPers I know (in my RP guild of 80ish people) lost some of their names. They decided that they didn't like it, but were creative enough to improvise, adapt, and overcome.

 

In my personal opinion, I believe that originality and creativity are hallmarks of a good RPer. I have found this to be true in my experience in PnP, LARP, and MMO RP.

 

Emerson said it a long time ago, and it's still true today: consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

 

Why not look at this as a wonderful opportunity to break out of a rut, let go of your "consistency" and explore new avenues of RP?
