Some advice for a noob healer?

Hey guys

So I am currently playing my first ever healer (in TOR or any other MMO for that matter) I enjoy it and I think I am actually getting quite decent at it. However I have recently started PVP for the first time and I was hoping some more experienced players could provide some advice. I have proven reasonablly effective in Hutt Ball and I enjoy the command point style maps but void star utterly perplexes me. I just cant stay alive long enough to do much in such a condensed environment, in my experience this mode just seems a death-trap if you are focusing on heals.

I realise these are solo based games and I cant rely on other players to look out for me so I was wondering if anyone could shead some light on how best to approach this round is it just a hard map for a healer or am I simply not using the correct approach (if such a thing exists for healing in pvp) ? Is there a way to approach PVP that can make you less of an easy target?

Thanks for your help and I am sorry for what is no doubt a generic and annoying thread.

First off, THANKYOU for providing something other then QQ in pvp forums. Now as to your voidstar problems, This should be your highest healing map and easiest to play. The key is to Hug the pillars close to your defensive respawn when defending and the outside ones when attacking. When you notice a ranged class beating on you you can easily line of sight them with either the pillar or the stacks of crates next to it. If you're on The Bastion and Republic I would gladly play some warzones with you on my healer Raideyoh to show you all of the best spots to heal from on each map and provide some addition tips based on any other difficulties you may have. PVE has a pretty small learning curve versus PVP... And it's not humiliating to lose to a npc mob, the way it is to have some other player target/taunt you. Just keep playing and learning, we've all been there.

I can't say enough about the importance of your class board either. There are so many key things to learn, all of which are class (and almost always tree) specific. Go and ask lots of questions.

Definitely get a tank to guard you, and hope/pray the opposing team doesn't mark you...or if they do, that they don't pay attention to it.

I've had matches where I know I end up being marked as a healer and I spend most of the match behind the forcewall waiting to rejoin the match to be insta-killed again. But I keep coming back for more...I love it.

sums up my last experience of void star lol I did wonder if I just suck or if that happens at times. I am a Republic commando so I specialise in single heals rather than aoe healing. I am virtually fully speced in the healing tree so very much a full blood healer. PVP would obviously be more simple on my healer but I have found healing to be a much more enjoyable and rewarding play style than dps so I am determined to stick with it.

This was great advice thank you and also thanks for your very kind offer, unfortunately I am on the nightmare lands server.

Yes I have certainly noticed the learning curve :p I have managed to go from finishing near bottom of leaderboards to the middle, that is progress I suppose. On that note this leads me to another noob question, is healing an effective way to progress through warzones in terms of ranking commendations etc? As I have noticed that getting kills seems to be a simple and effective way to collect the medals and points.

Thanks again for your help guys.

Whilst you are waiting for the game to start, announce that you are a healer by spamming heals on the ppl you think may be tanks. This will cause the better tanks to protect you, which will help your survivability a lot.

I am a scoundrel and, whilst getting very high heal scores, I was very rarely near the top of the medal count. I have found that by throwing in some reasonable DPS, rather than focusing entirely on healing, I am getting a lot more medals. You will pick up 2.5K hit and sometimes 75K total damage to start with. Also, I think that beating on ppl near the objectives yields more offensive/defensive medals than pure healing.

Yes i got some advice for you.

Dont play this game.

It amuses me that people can have such terrible sad lives that they have nothing better to do that go on a forum about a game they don't like and troll. I don't like WOW or COD/BF3 oddly enough I dont take part in their communities either I have better things to do with my life.

Anyways thanks for the advice, I actually now just bluntly ask if anyone could cast guard and it works sometimes :p ive topped healing a few times now, unlocking my troopers instant heal has been useful as well. I took Aroewarrior's advice re trying to hiding in the terrain in voidstar and it has certainly helped a lot so thank you. My biggest issue with PVP atm is the complete lack of teamwork and any co-ordination, I hope level 50 will prove to be less mercenary focused once I get through the several week gear grind and I have a chance :p I recall a game of hutball earlier where I dont think anyone (including me as whats the point in taking the ball as a squishy healer) in my team even looked like scoring mainly due to the fact nobody even tried to pass or go forward as a team, highly frustrating.

Line of sight is vital, if you are a sorc use speed, you can also try to take your attackers to your own dps or to a point you wish to drag them towards. Be very aware of your positioning, pay attention to terrain esp snag points. Standing on top of one of your own snipers can sometimes help.... or get them killed with you,,

Cast heals on players early in the match so they see your name pop up, you want to have friends on your team.

At the same time, try to appear unimportant to the enemy....Watch where enemy snipers/gunslingers setup.

Put any heal/bubble on the run skills on easy to reach keys/binds.

Healers are often thinking players who by their habit of watching all health bars have very good situational awareness, use it.

Endure, learn and laugh a lot

Good luck

This game is very gear dependent, commando healers need to keep moving all the time - so hug those pillars and get used to hammer shooting and throwing your AOE heal on the move. Also use that cleansing ability on yourself and your tank all the time (i hope you have specced into it). Use SCC as much as you can. But yeah your biggest helper is the terrain, position yourself so that you can easy move just a little to cut off any damage heading your way - the more you move the less chance melee people will have on hitting you - do it well enough and a single person will not be able to take you down and more likely they will get bored of it and go find someone else.

I usually average 300-500k healing done, 200-400k damage received and 1-6 deaths per WZ. Be prepared to get hit in the face a lot.

Ive found that when someone marks me, I can easilytake the mark off me, even if im not ops leader. just right click ur name go to the symbol things, then just select the same mark they marked u with, tht should take the mark off... hope tht helps :)

oh, and, no, 50 pvp doesnt help the teamwork or anything like tht, its just the luck of the draw in hoping u get put into a premade with full war hero geared ppl. lol

heal ur best, cast a few heals b4 wz start to get guard, los ranged, and be awesome ;)

You are actually doing a disservice by that - that mark is only visible to your team and not your enemy. So if someone marked you so that they can guard/help you and you remove that mark, then yeah, good luck.

I think you misunderstood what he is telling you. Basically unless you are an ops or scoundrel healer you are going to get face rolled in pvp because more than likely you're a glass cannon. See healers have no survivabilty in this games 50 pvp unless you are geared to the max.

Have fun begging a tank to guard you. Most aren't competent enough to even realize that would help them in the WZ so they just ignore when you ask for guard.

It's so much fun playing a class that is reliant on another class guarding you.

Voidstar defending is rough on all healers. There's not much room to kite away. Your best pillars are by the medpacks, but that makes it harder to rotate sides and crossing the open to get there can get you killed more often than not. :(

From what I've seen commando healers are very peel/fake cast reliant.
