Darth-Rammstein
Thank you! I was tired of seeing blocky shadows even with settings on high! Edited September 17, 2012 by Darth-Rammstein
Flamecloak
I was actually just thinking about this the other day. Glad to see it getting fixed up.
Spittle
This is a good improvement, but should have been optimised a long time ago.
Jacen_Starsolo
So that means the end of the shadows that look like they were made for the Atari 2600?
Gonco
YES. This is awesome.

Red-Dwarf
Ah, is that why I started getting occasional graphic tears across the screen in 1.4? Not nailed it down yet but occasionally an effect in combat was generating a long thin line to the edge of the screen like it failed to hold shape and is just shooting off in a random direction. Still trying to get proper repro steps on it, came up occasionally on both the ground and space, only a minor distraction tbh.
DarthTHC
This might be a logic question beyond the developers, but I'll ask anyway... The new system supports realistic self-shadowing. As the player runs around in the game world, they will see their arms, Lightsabers, or blasters casting shadows onto themselves. WHAT? WHY? HOW? GratuaCuun
This is great, I've got an NVIDIA GTX 550 - it plays Skyrim faster than greased gravel through a duck but for some reason, whenever I enabled the shadows, I kept getting major lag hits. From what you've said, this should really do a good job of fixing some of the issues for the game
Glzmo
Hello everyone, Please discuss this week's Developer Update: Shadow Optimizations in Game Update 1.4 blog in this thread!Might be a good idea to upgrade the Engine to DirectX 11 for this to save some performance. Also, will these engine upgrades make the engine more friendly towards chat bubbles (when can we expect them?), and GUI frames in general? Or is optimization for that next on the list for 1.4.1 or so? Edited September 17, 2012 by Glzmo
xorcist
OMG! This is very encouraging news! I have been running the game with shadows disabled because it did not really improve my play experience with it enabled, as my FPS was seriously suffering and the game was unplayable for the most part. Very pleased to hear about the other optimizations as well. Next, we'll need to see some fixes with environmental lighting / light sources. Tiranea
That's great news, the blocky shadows were the one thing that really bothered me about the graphics whenever I took screenshots.
Skodan
thats nice. ill stick with the shadows turned off though, will keep my performance up
xxadamtxx
Hm, Thats pretty cool you guys are changing that. Ive never even seen that in game haha!
Selvec
Next on the list, DX11 Rewrite.
alifaraaz
It may just be shadows but it also mentions general game optimazations. This is a great step in the right direction if it works out well looking forward to it. It's also evidence that they have no intent on letting this.game die.like so many haters wish. F2P, content and game optimisations, all steps to improve the game
Jacen_Starsolo
omce again totaly useless crap in a patch , FFS fix the damm issues instead of spenting time on useless stuff like this ! the forced server merges is also in tomorrow's patch btw. phill-fry
omce again totaly useless crap in a patch , FFS fix the damm issues instead of spenting time on useless stuff like this ! I don't see how this is useless tbh , I for one am an aesthetics type of guy having improved shadows will greatly improve immersion when playing the game and also this is just one part of 1.4 not the entire patch there's also much more content related stuff if that's what your wining about. Keep up the good work BW, how about adding a day/night sequence now?
Izorii
Cant say I have ever noticed a problem with shadows, cant say I would have picked this as something I wanted changed, and can think of a hundred things I would rather have development time spent on but a lot of people seem happy with it, so who am I to complain. chuixupu
This is far from useless...for this day and age I'd say it's about time! Also gives me some hope of future time of day shifting
JonathanCP
Although the shadows are indeed pretty on the PTS, I can sadly tell that the promised optimization for SLI setups is NOT working. I'm getting 60+ FPS whatever the settings on live servers. On the PTS, whenever I put the shadows on high, it drops to 28-30... Even with today's patch (it even got a little worse?) Rogoo
"Players with high-end AMD CrossFire or Nvidia SLI machines should notice a large improvement when running the game with the new shadow system." Best news in a long time! Can't wait to test it out. Also: omce again totaly useless crap in a patch , FFS fix the damm issues instead of spenting time on useless stuff like this ! How is optimizing a game that is in dire need of optimization a BAD change ? Really ? Edited September 17, 2012 by Rogoo
