Can jedi have friends?

Yes.

A jedi is forbidden to have attechment.

It isnt love or friendship they forbid.

It is that you put the live's of one person above the life of others.

Example: obi-one was friends with a bar-man anakin skywalker qui-gon-gin commander codi etc.

yet he always put the needs of the many first.

Anakin is the prime example why the jedi forbid attachment.

If anakin could let padme go then officaly the jedi coudnt forbid him anything(tho the jedi are still people and do make mistakes)

Essentially, the Jedi philosophy is Buddahism.

The Buddah says that any/all attachment, to people things whatever, is the cause of all suffering. People suffer because they do not want to let go of their attachments to whatever. The only way one can reach enlightenment is to be free of all attachment. No lovers, friends, possessions.

The problem with Jedi is they want to be good. Good is the result of attachment. Which is why "good" jedi fall to the dark side. Passion. Their passion for life (what they are attached to) causes suffering in them and they fall to the dark side.

Yoda said over and over in the movies that a true jedi must let go of all attachment in order to serve the force properly (specifically when counciling Anakin). He warned Anakin if he didn't let go of those he loved he would cause suffering and fall to the dark side. He further counciled Luke later on that suffering, fear, attachment lead to the dark side.

A real follower of the Jedi philosophy would hold no attachment to anything. Be completly passive and unemotional. The danger here is arrogance. As you loose emotions you loose perspective and become logical/intellectual. This leads you to arrogance which Palpatine used against the Jedi.

A true jedi must not posses any thing they would ever fear loosing. Even friendship.A true Jedi must always be mindful of any attachment. Attachment leads to fear and suffering. The dark side are they.

Now watch me necro this hard.

Jedi ARE allowed friendship. Even love. But you must not let it rule you. A true Jedi, is one who loves all life and understands that for there to be light, there must also be dark. Many do not handle it this way, sadly, and thus, as mentioned, fall to the dark side. Another common misconception of Jedi, is "they are not allowed to feel emotion", which couldn't be more wrong.

There is no balance if no emotion is part of it. That is the opposite. Jedi MUST and WILL feel emotion. All of them at that, even anger, hate, spite, jealousy and sadness. The important thing, however, to a Jedi... Is allowing it to flow through you. Feel the emotion, understand it. And once you have done so, let it pass through you. Let it go. There will come a time again when you will feel it again, and thus you repeat the process. Be in control of yourself and how you feel. Balance it. This way, you achieve balance and will not hesitate or doubt what is needed in the name of the Force.
