Dear Leonalis,

Maybe this is a cultural divide, but, please lighten up.

Phillip's posts have been some of the more interesting, friendly, and overall fun yellow posts that I've seen on this forum since the early days. He's not a customer service representative. He's the security guy.

And once again I got to repeat myself... if this information is so important, that a security chief is explaining things on the forums, why is it not translated ?

This game is advertised and sold in three languages, not one. If you plan to make important changes on something like security measures, it is your responsibility to get a translated version of the info online on the same day as the original, unless of course, you are begging for all people, who are not able to fluently read english to leave, cause they get insecure over security matters and cannot read the explanation.

Or once again, don't be a MrYellowDuck and openly admit, that you are unable to translate single pages in a timely manner, and someone of the community will do.

Because nobody cares. Really.

Important announcements might get translated, but that doesn't mean each post anyone considers important has to. I'll pick more communication over translating everything anyday.

Yes this thread is also totally unnecessary and needs no translation because the topic is really useless and the Wall of text gives this clearly.

I mean Phillip is only the security chief and if this person write/speak to the community this means nothing.

You're saying that a thread about Forum and Game Security, specifically posted to alleviate concerns espoused by this community, posted and written by Bioware's Security Guy, is not an important thread?

Also, you're wrong. By the very fact that people are asking for this to be translated, shows that people care. By the very fact that this thread has so many replies, shows that it is an important topic.

Important announcements should be translated and they should be translated before the English version is posted. All translations must be posted at the same time.

Isn't that rather contradictory ? You would pick more communication... which nobody cares about ? Sounds strange to me.

Also, I am not asking for every tidbit of information to be translated. We do that faster than Bioware anyway. But if it is important info, worth a sticky, then why isn't that info also translated to the other two languages ?

We currently got 14 stickies on the german general board, when the english board got only 7... 10 of the 14 could easily be unstickied or even deleted right away without loosing any info, but someting as important as security is not worth a sticky over at the german board and not even a translation ?

Bioware obviously does care about getting our money... and as we pay in € and not $, we even pay more for getting the same game... but less service... so they should as well care about keeping the WHOLE playerbase informed.

If the game had never had a german and french version, I wouldn't insist on any kind of translation, but the game is available in german and french. You lured players in, that cannot speak english, but can speak german or french and they found a game they are happy with and that they want to pay for... and naturally any change to the security system will matter to them just as it matters to anyone on this part of the forum.

How much more important can an announcement get, compared to a yellow sticky post ? Is there a new category named "really important" ? This whole thread was started by an official BW security specialist.. this is not some reply by service droid XY-42.

All I meant is that translation is thing that nobody cares about. And yes, I know it's not true because apparently you do. But in big picture, getting this translated is not important.

Becase everyone at BW can create sticky thread, and Phill is nice enough guy to give up update about his work. But if instead of making players happy this creates only more waves of "translate this nao", then why bother?

They are informed. Just because you lack knowledge to understant information doesn't mean information wasn't given.

Of course let us close the European Server an the pacific/asian too an localize the game only for us-player

This would be the best for the game. Amazing,

Oh, so if I tell you something in german, you feel informed, just cause you got the info, even though you cannot read or understand it ?

Or how about kantonese ? Most people would even have a hard time reading the texts, much less understand the meaning.

Wenn ich hier einfach irgendwas schreibe, findest Du das völlig normal, die Information kommt ja rüber, auch wenn du kein Wort verstehst, was ich hier schreibe ? Eindrucksvoll.

In computer science you distinguish data and information. a whole text can be full of data, but have no information at all, as data only becomes information, when it is understandable.

And calling the localization an error is probably the most egocentric thing I have read in a while.

So I'm no longer able to log in from different PCs cause I use so many email adresses and passwords that I'm unable to remember all of them, well yeah now I get it, that makes it alot saver. *ignoring the rest of the post*

Does anybody else think at Donald while reading MrYellowDucks posts? Guess hes a bit retarded but at least hes entertaining.

Well I guess its some sort of cultural divide because its a important information and the fact that it isn't available at our language is an absolute no go and that it is entertaining can't compensate this because its not there. Well maybe we are a bit too dedicated to rules and security and things like that, you know its a Krauts thing you may have heared about it in history lessons ;) ( don't take it too serious), but we are who we are. But if I'm not wrong than Leonalis is from Switzerland but I would blame the language just to be sure that something is to blame, because of our different understanding of how things should be done and what should be avoided like the translation of the new forum rules contains an indirect insult and the thing with the callouts was translated in a way that forbid users to interact with each other, yeah right its forbiden to answer questions.

Hope you are able to understand what I have writen, if not blame the language, if yes maybe now you understand why the german community is a bit thin-skinned lately cause €A crossed the line with nearly every action and translation they made and what goes around, comes around.

So are all other european customers, but they don't get their own forum.

And calling the localization an error is probably the most egocentric thing I have read in a while.

I never called localization of game mistake, only forums. Because it's not only reason for people to complain, but also either makes communication so much harder(have to check and reply on 3 diferent forums), or as in current case, makes one forum primary while all others recieve less attention.

Oh boy, look, you people turned yet another thread into "omg we want translations" argument. No more.

Over and out.

Initial answers below!

For those of you wondering why MrYellowDuck surfaced, you will find there was a theme hiding in the answers to the original posts a couple of weeks ago when I mentioned I was lining up some ducks. It was meant as a bit of humour in what is otherwise a very boring topic, so please don't get too side tracked by MrYellowDuck himself...

So every time I have to answer a security question now, I will have to check my email and copy-paste a code?

That is a major annoyance for me, as everytime I restart my PC the game and the website ask for a security question.

Please tell me, that that is not true!

One of the aspects of the current (pre-April 2nd) implementation is that it is possible to get in to a state where you are asked a Security Question every time you log in. The changes on April 2nd will eliminate that state, and from April 2nd onwards you will only be prompted if we detect a change that warrants revalidation.

I won't go into detail on all the aspects that we use to determine a change has occured other than to say IP address is indeed one of the aspects. I realise that will be very annoying for those people with an ISP that changes out IP addresses on a regular basis, but that frequency of being asked for an Email Security Code based on just IP address change will not change from how often it does get asked today. As a number of people have pointed out the solution there would be to get a Security Key which while it does ask you every time you want to log in, does not have the small delay in waiting for an email to arrive.

The frequency you are describing does appear to be the state issue I originally described however, and that will stop happening going forwards.

This leaves two questions open for me:

1. How do you determine "changed location" ? before I got a authenticator, I was prompted my security question every day I logged in, simply cause my ISP hands me a different IP every day. The chance, that I will ever reuse the same IP is very low, even though I am always using the same computer. I would obviously not be pleased, if I would have to wait for a mail and enter some security code very single day in the future. Or is this security measure void, if there is an authenticator used ?

2. Since this information is obviously important enough that the security chief does post himself, how long will it take to get this information translated into the two other languages, that this forum supports ? (This time it is not "just before the weekend")

Oh and on a side note... Maybe I am just not getting the joke or it is lost in translation, but if I were making fun of customers, who are weary about security issues, by comparing them with a hysterical duck, my boss would likely lock me up in the companies basement and deny me any access to public channels.. .and he would do right.

Yes, if you have a Security Key, that trumps everything else and you will not have to additionally enter an Email Security Code. ISP's that change IP address every day on their customers was taken into consideration, but sadly we can't eliminate the IP address out of the equation and still stay at a reasonable level of security within the authentication process.

For the direct question on how we determined changed location, there are many factors taken into account, and this is one of those pieces where it isn't quite straight forward to figure out for an attacker. So I'll leave the attackers with work to do...

For the side note, I'm anything but making fun of customers - my intent was to make fun of a ficticious yellow duck as an attempt to bring a bit of humour into what is otherwise a very boring topic. That and continue a theme from the previous answers to the thread from a couple of weeks ago. No offense intended!

This apparently is issue many players will have, so I'm really hoping for some reasonable reply(meaning not "I'm sorry but you'll have to suck it up and deal with email or authenticator").

Also.

Oh, come on, everyone should have at least one 'unsafe' email for such things.

Sadly the answer is not what you wanted to hear. :jawa_frown: There is a certain point where keeping security at an acceptable level has to outweigh the inconvienence - if that were not the case, we would gladly do away with passwords and their ilk without a second thought! There are bad people out there that would love to take over other peoples accounts - and our authentication system (and all its complexities) are what stops them.

I do have many unsafe email addresses - I'm not actually asking for donations though, so no email address should be given

Is there anything being developed that will merge multiple licenses into one account?

The names I had to select for the other accounts aren't necessarily as easy to remember.

Our system is not designed that way - currently an 'account' is directly related to a set of characters, and there are no plans to have yet another layer of (master?) account that links several accounts together.

Do you know where Security Keys are for sale in the EU and/or generally outside of the US? As far as I'm aware, Security Keys are not currently for sale outside of the US.

Perhaps Mr. Philip_BW could help with this?

We are working on getting the Security Key back in stock within EU as quickly as we can - I'm in constant contact with the people who run the EU side of the Origin Store where the keys are sold, and as soon as I have a better date than 'soon' I'll be sure to get a post up.

Considering how many people asked pretty much the same question in various different guises of language, the use of Mr. YellowDuck was warranted. Yellow ducks are adorable, but real ducks are the most terrifying things to be behold. Would have rather he used "Generic SWTOR Player #7789"?

*peck*

Maybe Mr. Phillip_BW talks to his yellow bathtub duck a lot, to share his security ideas and secrets.

It was more of a theme based on my previous comments about getting ducks lined up - I don't actually have a bathtub duck, but am now thinking of getting one!

This made me litearlly laugh out loud. I'd not seen that link before, but it was well worth the read! Thanks! :jawa_biggrin: It's the reason I'm thinking of getting a rubber duck now...

My question is this:

What's with everything being duck related?

Shouldn't you be getting all your Jawas in a row? :jawa_wink:

I've never seen a duck round these parts till you showed up.

I'd have had to go with 'droid references and single-file bantha's, and it wouldn't have made as much sense. I'll try to pick something more Star Wars oriented for next time perhaps.

I bet that name is now taken in game if it wasn't already.

I've no idea if the name is taken in-game as a character. If it is, it's nothing to do with BioWare. I did however register the account name while writing up the post, so the only MrYellowDuck posts you might see will be mine...

My brother has that problem, too. He needs to answer the security question every single time he logs in, even when he does it from the same PC. According to phone support, some accounts are bugged that way and need to answer the question every time and "they are working on it". He was told that back in June, though. Hopefully that won't mean the people that suffer from that bug will get spammed by these new security question e-mails every single time he logs into the game or forums.

Yes - the bug referenced will be fixed as part of this implementation on April 2nd. It didn't affect many players, but it sure is annoying for them and I'm all for a better login experience (as long as it stays secure!).

Not happy about that anwer, but thanks anyway.

I understand that after change, since you will allow player to do more things by themselves, some things that are 'safe enough' right now might not be so after that change. Still, wouldn't it be possible to let player(if he specifically selects such option in his account page) to log into game(and game only) using old or reduced security measures? I'm not security expert so I might be not aware of something, but only thing in danger in such case would be our characters, with account itself remaining protected by email authentiaction, and safe.

Yes, I'm really not looking forward to checking my email every day ;)

First point:

One thing that this says to me is that if they're doing a good job of location-based ID of accounts, then they should be able to allow us to save our password and not type it in every time. I think removing a no-longer-necessary nuisance would go a long way toward alleviating the pain of all the new nuisances.

Second point:

I was recently protected from being able to access my Blizzard account and, after trying a few things, decided it was too difficult to get past the security so I could log in again. I had been planning to buy the Starcraft 2 expansion when this happened, so that $40 stayed in my bank account instead. I'm suddenly wondering if this is in the stars for my SWTOR account too.

Hi Phillip, in response to this, is anything being done to make Physical Security Keys available to European customers?

Currently, the only way to obtain one was via the Collectors Edition, which are now very rare. The European version of the Origin store does not sell them, and we can not purchase them from the US version.

Yes, we have the Android/iOS versions, but these are buggy to say the least. I have had to have mine removed soo many times, that I am know running without it. The calls to CS can take anywhere between 5-90 minutes. Many other people have to have theirs removed also.

So yeh, can we expect Bioware to do anything in order to get Origin EU selling the physical keys, or are we SOOL?

Perhaps I'm a little confused, and I don't intend to offend anyone by asking:

1. Regardless of personal style used, communicating with the players is a good thing right? (Thank you Philip)

2. From what I gather, Philip is not a multilingual person, and does not work in a department requiring him to be able to translate anything from English. If the department responsible for translating things has failed to do so, would it not be more productive to address the issue with them, instead of repeatedly demanding it of him? (And imho, if there are at least two people posting the demand/complaint here [in English], there are two people who could translate it and post it themselves, if the issue is that grave. Just saying...)

3. Philip did mention:

"We are working on getting the Security Key back in stock within EU as quickly as we can - I'm in constant contact with the people who run the EU side of the Origin Store where the keys are sold, and as soon as I have a better date than 'soon' I'll be sure to get a post up."

For anyone still asking about EU security keys. I remember what a pain it was to get anything when I was stationed in Germany, so I am sympathetic, believe it or not.

4. Do people genuinely not realize that there are multiple departments in nearly every entity? Just confused why anyone (and many) are foisting their desires for things not related to security in a thread by the head of security...

Anyway, I appreciate the information, Philip. Kudos on the attempt to reach out and let us know.

*Waves and goes back to zapping something while cackling*
