Lucas has never regarded the EU as what actually happened to the characters from the films.

"And now there have been novels about the events after Episode VI, which isn't at all what I would have done with it. The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned and Luke doesn't get married..." - George Lucas in Total Film, 2008.

Disney received a story treatment for the sequels as part of the sale of Lucasfilm, so it's a pretty good bet that the story as told will have nothing at all to do with the EU, and probably invalidate a lot of it.

I think it's good they're avoiding the post-RotJ EU stuff - which I universally dislike, aside from the Zahn novels - but I'm disappointed they're going back to the original characters. Time for new stories about new characters, rather than flogging the, "Luke and Han, they're so awesome, we want to see more of them!" line.
