Be sure to reverse engineer! BUT don't get blinded chasing after upgrades. Be sure to equip the first green that is an upgrade!
And don't forget you can reverse engineer it even AFTER you or your companion has had it equipped. So if you equip that first green and then get a "critical" giving you an item with a mod slot, swap them out and re-eng the normal one.
