The KOTOR era is the start of the time when the Jedi start to treat use of the Force with a bit more respect. By the time of the movies, they've really scaled back, and have a 'minimum use of Force (ha)' approach.

One of the novels explains why it is that Yoda's visibly strained from lifting an X-Wing, when in some books, Luke rebuilds a whole castle without building a sweat. Yoda's drawing on the Force to the absolute minimum to achieve what he wants to do, and not a drop more. That's why he's the Jedi Master.
