Good to see this thread again. So how many pages/posts did the old thread get to in the pre-launch forums anyway?
Last I remember the space combat thread had been restarted 20 some-odd times due to the thread getting too large, so it definitely had thousands of posts.
I also want to thank a lot of the pre launch space supporters, and post launch for that matter, who've helped to keep the dream alive.
Suggestions on 3D Space flight
I wanted to throw a couple suggestions out there that might show that 3-axis flight doesnt just mean "Hey chewie lets go that way and see whats out there" or wandering aimlessly mining asteroids. Most of these scenerios can be either full flight or flight/ground force warzones/hotspots. Anyway these are just a couple of idea's i've had, if similar stuff has been posted to death then I apologise.
Escort/Assault the Frigate:
A Republic or Imperial Frigate has been damaged in battle and are trying to repair their hyperdrive systems. This is a basic defend or assault mission. Key systems would need to be destroyed before the "timer" runs out and the ship goes into lightspeed to the nearest shipyard. These systems could be destroyed either by attacking the outer hull of the ship or by landing in the damaged hanger and assaulting the frigate from within ala BF2. I can see a lot of great visuals with a large ship on the verge of being destroyed.
Astroid Field Dogfight:
Two opposing capital ships have spotted each other across a massive astroid field. Both factions dispatch fighters into the fray. Hate to bring up JTL but one of the things I loved was dueling friends near some of the bigger astroid fields, nothing like avoiding rocks while trying to get the upper hand on an opponent. This kind of scenerio also breaks away from the circular chase that a lot of dogfights end up becoming.
Assault/Protect the Shipyard:
A capital ship comes out of hyperspace to attack an opposing orbital shipyard. Key areas of the shipyard need to be attacked to reduce shields and power to certain systems. Players would be able to man anti air turrets within the shipyard and I can see a alderaan warzone like cannon or two firing at the capital ship. The cannon could be damaged by either pilots or ground forces and can also be repaired by the defenders from within. First to destroy the shipyard or capital wins.
Faction Fleet Showdown:
Classic BF2 Scenerio. Two opposing fleets fight for control of the sector. Multiple Frigates, two capital flag ships, and a ton of fighters. Taking down the opposing factions flag ship wins the battle and can be done either with a ground assault force or with bombers attacking the outer hull.
Into the Nebula:
A Large asteroid has been found to be rich with rare mineral, The only problem is it sits within a massive Nebula. The nebula's Ionic properties make it dangerous for Capital Ships to enter so both the Sith and Republic have dispatched a squadron of fighters to claim the prize. The nebula could have effects such as low to no radar use, limited shields, mineral enriched mini asteroids that explode when shot, etc. Can see this as a more classic 'reduce the enemy tickets/reinforcements' style zone.
Destroy the Station:
This is more of a pve/raid idea taken straight from Return of the Jedi. It basically involves a ground team on the planets surface taking out the shield generator of an orbiting space station while a pilot team fights off frigates, capital ships, and fighters and hitting the station once the shield is down. Situations happening in one of the battles could have an effect on the other such as the pilots taking out a capital ship that is sending reinforcements against the players on the ground, or the the players on the ground knocking out a relay antenna disrupting the communications of the protecting fleet resulting in a damage reduction bonus for the pilots.
