Yes, but in League of Legends, you aren't penalized after the match is over. League of Legends also depends on 5v5 not 8v8. Leaving makes sense for those who are valor rank 60, and the only incentive to stay is for a win for the weeklys.

When there were no PVP ranks, or gear. Because it was fun? And yes, occasionally one side outmatched the other. What happened? The outmatched side sent people out to gather more players to even the score, which eventually led to 100 v 100 battles.
