  1. This bug has been around since launch for me, always subscribed. Still broken. Nameplates work (because they're all turned on in preferences) but the targeting arrow is lost when changing instances. Ground circle still works so you can just barely tell what target is selected. This happens after same planet instance change regardless of grouped or not. The only actions outside of relog is planet/ship change. I suspect there is a bug in instance change code where it's not using same code path as loading a new planet - perhaps check the cache flush, since I record about 2x the disk activity when changing instances vs. loading new planet. System: XP SP3 32bit /fastdetect - no /3gb Card: NV G92 (250 GTS) 512MB on nvidia driver 320.49 . I have been through about 3-4 driver upgrades since launch, as well as numerous diskcachearena recreations and repairs, so those can be ruled out.
  2. They could, although I don't know who actually inflates numbers by not counting just the aggregate login numbers. It does neither the beancounters nor the investors any good for fake numbers.
  3. I think the skin tones were reverted to the pre-1.4 colors. Which is fine, since I was getting slightly tired of my characters looking like junkies or goth. Especially since there is no current mechanic to change your look after you create a character, which I think is silly (I would gladly pay CCs to be able to get a new hairstyle, skin color, etc.). The CrypticEngine (STO, CO) is one of the better RPG appearance customization engines that lets you change the appearances on the fly.
  4. This how you got babies in the official Sims back in the day too, and the players still thought it was an important mechanic. So regardless of whether or not "anything happens" on screen, the relationship(s) to the players still matter in terms of the game being an RPG.
  5. Say what? This idea is almost as bad as going to comicon and having a signup sheet filled with all the fans who "want to get into voiceacting" and ask the same stupid questions over and over at panels. At best, you end up wasting Producers' time- that's a lot of time spent listening to demos. Why would they do this when they already know VAs' agents, can call someone up on the phone, fax over an NDA and script then have them come in and do it?
  6. Depends on the server. The way this works is they'll just set the rename flag for that character. I don't know if RP servers have filters to prevent naming a character Fartlord (or if some jerkface has already logged into every server and created Fartlord to take the name from you already). This didn't involve a rename at all, but after the first voluntary transfer, I created an Anakin/Luke wannabe (complete with facial scar) JK on my new destination server and named him Skyderper. Kira makes skirts for him (aka synthweaving). It was available (but the server wasn't an RP server) and the name was able to be carried through the last round of consolidations.
  7. A lot of gamers did switch to 2000 from 98 in order to get better 32bit drivers and performance (better USB! Fewer BSODs! NTFS!). Many of us used it until XP became stabilized (SP1/SP2).
  8. I did precisely this. Well actually I made a new character in order to make a synthweavng alt, but I made him a male guardian (I already had a female guardian) specifically to romance Kira.
  9. My female smuggler is currently romancing Corso and he's not creepy at all. He's just one of those insecure nice-guys. He also gets jealous when I flirt with other NPCs, but you know he really reminds me of Jason Statham's character from Expendables, where he is really trying to look out for the chick and will kick the other guy's *** if they treat her wrong but tries to keep things on the DL otherwise.
  10. And the high-ARRPU customers are known as whales. The operative activity for the developer switching to the freemium model will be to acquire and maintain the whales. Whale population tends to increase linearly with MAU, but they may be largely hidden from the rest of us (because lets face it, the majority of forum users are here to QQ about *something*). Whales may also be affected in this game, like in STO, by the specific IP. Whales also existed during P2P (since they exist independent of business model), but the point of switching to the freemium model is to increase ARPU through converting previous and existing players that may not have been P2P whales (since the actual market for them to purchase items was limited to account purchasing before F2P) as well as acquiring new whales through expanding the game's market itself.
  11. They could switch it to STO-style where you can read your mail anywhere but you can't send mail or retrieve any attachments unless you go to a console. Would that be a good compromise?
  12. Have any recently released MMOs released a store expansion within the first year of the game's release? The main factor in whether we will see real retail box expansions is whether the marketing beancounters decide would be cost effective to market and distribute the expansion that way. I see companies (CCP, Turbine) trying it once, then realizing the cost of having to pay exorbitant publisher fees to distribute the game in box form did not translate to enough sales for that cost (there being little to no value added in what was supposed to have been a value-added reselling scheme). Again, as with everything else, WoW appears to be exception (probably because they burn a lot of money on untargeted advertising and that sort of marketing requires there to be retail boxes on store shelves).
  13. Huh? This game was making a profit before the layoffs. This was stated to investors by EA. Paraphrased quote: "TOR is profitable but not enough to write home about." With the current guesstimated playerbase and current staffing levels, the game is still making a profit. I have no idea what you mean by "pay for itself" since the development costs were already capitalized through tax writeoffs.
  14. And this is exactly one of the arguments against insta-dualspecing; you'd have to also restrict the dualspec toggle once you've entered an instance/warzone.

I think an important factor for both STO and SWTOR is that a statistically significant portion of the playerbase is there more or less for the specific IP (Star Trek, Star Wars) instead of playing that particular MMO for other reasons (overall genre, gameplay). While SWTOR was designed out of the box with an IP-specific company written story campaign, STO's support for IP-specific player-generated content (the Foundry) appears to be part of its appeal and perceived value but both games also cater to players who wish to participate in a story-rich game universe.
