Heck, if money is the issue, I'd settle for them increasing the price of an item by the amount of the unlock to make every purchase available to all characters. (ex. a 600 CC lightsaber would instead be 660 with none of the "locked in collections" shenanigans)

Yeah, I did some investigating last night and discovered that I've wasted some Cartel Coins. I've been away from the game for about 5 years and back now for about 2 months. I created a new character and repurchased some lightsaber crystals that I had on other characters. Live and learn, I suppose.

I don't really understand the whole "collections" thing entirely. If I buy something from the Cartel Market that has one or more pieces I'll never use, I resell them.

Personally, I think they should make a weapon that can do one of these two things: Ignite only one blade and use as a single saber, like Darth Maul did on Tatooine in Phantom Menace. Make a saber staff that breaks away into 2 sabers for dual-wielding. Of course, these suggestions would blur the lines between Marauder/Sentinel and Assassin/Shadow and would likely require new animations, but I can dream.

Agreed! It would be nice if a hooded robe came with an additonal robe with the hood hanging on the shoulders. That way, you could sell the version you didn't care for on the GTN.
