  1. Hello Germ! You and I started around the same time, though I'm coming to this as somewhat of an MMO veteran. I'll address some of your concerns here. As far as builds go, I advise that you build the way you like, initially. Try things out, have fun with it. If you find ways to make it work like a wookie in a woodshop, great! If it starts to cause you dissatisfaction, hit the skill trainer to reset your points. You can do so once per week for free. My main is a 34 Guardian, and I seem to build mostly toward my main goal with a bit of monomania, and then go back and get the 'extra' talents later. The order you do it in really won't hurt you, in the long run. As far as tanking/DPS goes, your best bet is to focus on what you do best, carve out a glorious path of destruction, OR shield your allies from harm. Go for broke, build in one direction, or carry some extra gear with you so you can change roles between battles. Inefficient? Well... Yes, actually. Your funds are often barely enough to cover all the training and gear and upgrades and OOH SHINY you run across; paying for two roles in one is just not helpful to your advancement. Personally, I'm Vigilance, and when I'm running with my friend, I switch my focus for a shield, and pretend to tank in Soresu. Mostly, I jump in and chop things up, so they don't kill us. That's the extent of my 'tanking', to be blunt. I seem to only have two AoE's available now, but they work just fine. Did I miss anything? It's nearly 4am here... Tired...
  2. I feel the need to chime in on this discussion at this point. I have a Smuggler, whom I've leveled to 20 by myself, cleared all the content of Coruscant, and just arrived on Taris after a few space battles. I hated every second of Corso's inane chatter and 'yank-to-spank' tanking style, since I prefer my foes to stay way the heck over there while I heal and throw grenades and shoot. I don't use Backblast often, because I avoid melee. Dirty Kick and Blaster Whip, same deal. Turn off Harpoon Shot, let that yammering buffoon galavant his way into the melee so I could throw a grenade into their midst? Yep, lots of waiting. Lots of waiting. If I wanted to melee, I'd play a Jedi, not a blaster-toting headline-bomber whose initial companion's pastimes include eating lead paint chips and arguing with Sarlaccs. That said: I've only carried that monosyllabic oaf around for twelve levels. A limited picture of things to come, to be sure. A toggle between harpoon and jet pack would likely have helped some. Being able to install a ball-gag would also return some viability to him, as I don't like him much at all. I've been playing just over three weeks in my spare time, and though I feel I made the right choice in going sawbones scoundrel, I don't want the companion I'm saddled with for now. Nar Shaddaa is effectively another two weeks of disappointment away whilst grinding through Taris alone. The jet pack gives me some hope that I can send Corso off to get in trouble after hitting tranquilize, and manually activate his AoE skills away from the stunned foe. A different bit of fiddling for now, but one I look forward to far more than before. In short: no need for Corso to be an idiot cowboy, the players say yeehaw and charge ahead plenty well on their own, lassos notwithstanding.
