I was the Jedi Player Senator (Shel'by for any who recall) for SW Galaxies for about a year, also played Bounty Hunter and officer professions for the pleasure of it. The melee game was a constant problem... except for one class... Spy... which could both Stealth in and Stealth out, unbreakable escape snare-remover, and enough DPS to drop most in a burst. Similar to Assassin/Shadow now... except most professions didn't have the 'oh crap' save yourself button, and fewer had the 'heal to infinity' option we see in SWTOR right now.
You don't give reflective self-healing shields to a ranged self-healing or dps class. That's just plain bad mechanics. Melee.. if anyone.. uses that skill to get into range. Keeping people in range is still a problem.
Add electro-net debuffs... and mega-heals.. and you're just asking for everyone to join that class.
I will hate-play melee if necessary.. my Commando is currently gathering dust, which is a shame.. but I got too much pride to play the flavor of the month (or in this case year) class simply because the game developers have abandoned the effort it takes to balance ranged vs. melee.
Jedi, love it or not, is the heart of Star Wars games... and Jedi are melee, unless you count mid-range casters... which are the only other profession we are seeing survive in PvP.
Unless you are willing to vote with your wallet... we need to suck it up and keep reminding Bioware in hopes they will recognize the flaws they added to the game. I never used to play my Commando to be a one-man show... now... for half-good players like myself.. the thrill of god-mode gets boring.
My only small protest is to never vote for a merc in a match... its not skill to use flawed game mechanics to achieve whatever you imagine you are achieving. Its just an illusion. For those willing to bear the shame of playing Merc/Commando... and plenty are... they will milk this 'affirmative action' class so long as Bioware allows it.
Such is the nature of PvP players. What they can't beat... most will join. Till Bioware moves the goalpost yet again.
